I know its horses for courses regarding how evening kick offs effect people for work, shifts, early starts, travel etc. But personally, the earlier the better- wouldn't mind a 7pm kick off.

I think it's for the benefit of those who leave 10 minutes before the end to catch the bus etc. They can stay to the very end now

Why did it change?

10 minutes half time is too difficult to calculate a finish time, and time remaining on a normal rotary clock.
3pm kick off, 3.45 end of first half. 4pm 2nd half til 4:45pm. Easy for simpletons like me.

I think it was for televised games. So that ‘people could have their tea, then settle down to the match’ or suchlike. It seems to have become the norm but so has working late, certainly down here most people don’t get home till gone seven, on a normal day, I’d guess it’s not much different in Sheffield. I note some games are now 8.00pm. I can see why but it’s harsh on people with younger kids.

Can anyone remember that Barnsley FC kicked off at 3.10pm . Simple reason that all pubs shut at 3 o clock giving the fans 10 minutes to get to Oakwell. Use to go there when United played away, you could get on the slag heap end for 2 bob but get grieve on returning home for ruining yet another pair of socks .

Chesterfield's home games kicked off at 3.15pm on Saturdays and 7.15pm in midweeks

I'd not seen that before so thanks for bringing it up. Indeed, a very good post by Cyprus and I learned a lot from that.

I had to smile when I saw the following though...

The way the clubs got around the law of the land, The Sunday Observance Act (of 1780), which prevented an admission charge being made for football matches was basically a fiddle. Admission was free but you needed to buy a programme to get in (programmes cost differing amounts depending on what part of the ground you wanted to enter).

My mind immediately went to the programme seller who yells "programmes three quid". I think it's knocked him out of his stride a bit, having to adapt this season to shout "programmes three fifty", but if he'd been selling them at the matches referred to above he'd have just about blown a gasket I imagine!
