Good to see the club signing up another young player on a long contract.

Regardless of what we all think of his performances so far and the extent of his potential, the club are at least acting proactively and positively when many questioned how long they'd hold onto the young prospects. I know they can still leave but this should at least mean we get a good fee if they do.

Great news, hopefully he'll continue to improve - has the makings to be a top centre half.

I agree. I have serious doubts about the lad making it at the higher levels due to his lack of pace, which we can't improve however its a good move for the club to secure our youngsters.
Plus there is no doubt he is steady enough for the level we find ourselves at.

If he was gud enuff ...................... we wudn't have secured his services.

Is it right that pace can't be improved? My instinct would be to agree with you that it can't but I remember an interview with Donny's fitness coach who said they'd spent a lot of time working with Billy Sharp to improve his pace.

Obviously a lot of it is down to physiological factors such as the make up of muscle fibres but how much can be done through training and technique?

I think one of Maguire's problems is the speed with which he turns. That should be easier to improve than his speed when running.

Plus, there's no doubt that his bigger build doesn't help with his pace. I've no doubt that as he continues to get leaner (which he already has done), he will improve his pace and reaction times.

To some (not much) extent you can improve your speed, but genetics dictate what your potential is. My parents were both slow, so I had little chance of improving. I tried things like running downhill (attempts to force your legs to move quicker), but don't think it helped much. I then resorted to pulling, shoving and backing off. ;)

One exception, I remember Warnock commenting on a young Jagielka, saying that he used to be one of the slowest in the youth team, but they worked on it and he eventually became very quick.

Yes it's absolutely right. That's why professional athletes don't bother training and trying to improve. ;-)

One thing that Maguire can definitely improve is his reading of the game and anticipation.
McGrath had lost nearly all his pace by the time he played for us but his vast experience meant he didn't need to be quick.

I believe his technique has been looked at, in regards to how he runs.

We did something similar with Wardy to help stop his injuries.

i'll say one thing in macguires defense he can certainly hit a hollywood ball

How long did Slew stay for after he signed his new contract?

I think most fans are now enlightened to know that the contract is meaningless in affecting whether we sell him - the For Sale sign hangs permanently above the academy - but yes it may mean we get a slightly higher price if the bid comes later down the line.

Hopefully Harry's pace will put off any serious bids and we can hold on to him in January.

If he only turns out to be of Championship standard we may even get to keep him.

My chief concern about Harry isn't his pace, but his tendancy to commit errors, he is still very raw which does mean that he will commit errors at this stage in his career, and that is what he has to improve on first and foremost.

He has got all the makings of a decent centre-half, and i'm not overly worried about his lack of pace, as there are plenty of centre-halves out there who aren't the quickest but perform well when at the side of quicker, faster centre-half.

We would get a fee up to 2017 anyway - he is not 24 for another 6 years so he cannot go on a Bosman until then.
Of course if he is out of contract at the time it would be less so it's pleasing that he has signed to 2015.
At 18 he is improving and learning all the time. If you read the game really well it makes up for pace to a certain extent, especially at centre back.
Being composed is half the battle.

Nice long contract should add a lot to his value when we sell him in January.

I don't fucking believe Utd fans ,imagine the negativities if he had turned down a contract or we got rid of him ,we sign him on a long contract and almost every post seeks out a negative angle and thats before the chief muppets (pigs) have arrived to add their bit. Why do we bother ?

feels like a bit of a losing battle doesnt it mate ?

There was a diagonal ball he played in the second half against the pigs that was reminiscent of Frank Leboeuf

Spot on there mate ...... McGrath was one of the best I've seen at reading the game. He never moved more than 10 yards in any direction and never ran.
Top defender !! If we'd had him for longer we would have benefited immensely.
