International break thoughts...

Just wondered 1stly who people think was/is a better player for us while they’ve been with us?

Secondly, could Maguire play in the current system? I guess you would naturally be more drawn to him being the central CB due to his dominance in the air etc, but one of his key features is that hey can play and drive forward with the ball. Just thinking whether he would be effective e.g. as the rcb opposite to JOC.

Interested on general opinions.

So torn between who has served us better, bloody love them both and Harry was in my year at school, depressing thought.

Maguire is an established England International, so of course he’s a level or two above JOC.

He’d be fantastic in our current system for the traits you mentioned. IIRC he played on the left of the back three at the WC for England.

Considering we only really saw Maguire at League One level then for me JOC has by far been the better servant.

Maguire would thrive in our system as he always did like to bomb forward.

As to who is the better player? Most would naturally say Maguire but I would argue that any gap is diminishing rapidly.

I can't imagine Maguire being as effective bombing up the wings as JOC is.

I wouldn't even have him over Basham or Egan at this moment in time.

To be honest, if someone offered me Maguire, VVD and Stones for our remaining eight games I think I'd pass.

That post is an absolute disgrace.

I’ve done a screenshot of it.

There’s a line of thinking that JO’C is currently the best left footed English centre back. Well, can you think of a better one??

Maguire in the middle over Egan...sorted.

One is first choice centre half for England, the other is understudy to Richard Keogh apparently!!

Next question.

JOC is playing the ideal role here for the type of player he is, he probably won’t play this role in this way for any other club when he eventually does move on and up.

Whether he will then be as effective is the big question, he struggled by all accounts in A traditional back four elsewhere.

Until JOC has done what Maguire has in the game, then there is no comparison.

Personally I think Jack will be found wanting by the pace of premier league football but I hope to god to be proved wrong.

The better the teams we play, the less bombing forward he does, check the Leeds Utd away game.

Well, for what it’s worth, I wouldn’t swap either JOC or Egan for Maguire. Those two compliment each other’s style of play. They have an understanding so, for me, it’s a no. I mean he couldn’t help us keep our sheets any cleaner at the moment.

If you are saying you would not play England’s number one CB in front of the Republic of Ireland’s reserve CB you really need to have a long hard think about it.

It’s like saying you would rather have Fleck over Deli Ali......

Oh no.......... I have opened another can of worms.

I think the second half v Brentford went some way towards removing any doubts about JOC in a back 4.

He's developed massively. I don't think he'd have any problem at all.

JOC's recent run of clean sheets at the top of the Championship beats anything Maguire did with us in League One. Same as Baldock has done more for us than Kyle Walker ever did. No question that the Prem/International players are the better two though.

Kyle Walker angled for the £50+million move to Man City.

He wasn't particularly bothered about moving to the Eithiad - just wanted the Blades to get the sell on clause.

Harry is a magnificent centre half who can easily play at the top of the premier league I reckon. Whether JOC can get there only time will tell. Just imagine them in the same team.

Think you have to look at it as sum of parts and then as individuals.....
Our back 3/5 compliment each other, so arguably make each other look potentially better than the individual actually is.
Adams/Keown & Pallister/Bruce been examples.
But Maguire has proved himself at the top level, against the prem and worlds best, something our current lads have to.... yet.
Harry was arguably also the best defender at last yrs Euro’s, so to that end I would say Harry has it, but our lads are closing in!!

I predict that should we go up and he starts well, then it won’t be long before Jack is considered for a call up.

Maguire is the slowest person in the universe.

Maguire for me was the embryo of what we are doing now. He used to bomb forward (albeit in a different system). Harry would easily fit into today's system and would be an able sub if JOC got injured.

Not sure I remember Harry 'bombing' anywhere .I think 'trundled' would be more appropriate.

I'm not knocking Harry. A great player for us in a very shit period. He scored from corners and had ball control way beyond your average defender. His attacking runs were slow but determined and controlled and very unusual for a large centre back.

Different players but both have given me great joy in a United shirt.
