Maguire - O’Connell Comparison

Not sure I remember Harry 'bombing' anywhere .I think 'trundled' would be more appropriate.

I'm not knocking Harry. A great player for us in a very shit period. He scored from corners and had ball control way beyond your average defender. His attacking runs were slow but determined and controlled and very unusual for a large centre back.

Different players but both have given me great joy in a United shirt.

You never saw him run 60 yards with the ball? Deary me, he did this most games.

Of course I saw him run forward but he did it slowly and deliberately. JOC comes forward in a passing move with teammates. Harry generally had shite around him and had to dribble it all the way himself.

Take a breath man and read what's said before flaming me .

Just saying Harry can attack from the back like we do now, probably has better ball skills too.

I think the potential of JOC could take him a long long way and I definitely think an England call up could be on the cards however to compare him to big Harry ??? Come on give your head a wobble.

I’m not sure where the idea that Maguire is slow actually came from but some United fans always seemed to like throwing that accusation at him. It certainly isn’t true anyway

Both have been great for the Blades, or there would not be the discussion. Many similarities, some differences. HM was more aggressive in attack, and without stats, I would think he scored more goals per game played. Albeit against lesser opposition in general. JOC has more visible pace, but HM is probably fitter and faster now then he was at his time with the Blades. Fitness, pace, reaction times are still improving rapidly year on year in English upper tier football. So, comparing like with like over a time period is difficult .
My closing comment on this subject is that the last time we were discussing the merits of JOC and how brilliant he was performing for us we got promotion. Seven clean sheets in a row, clear 2nd in the league, the omens are good.....

Think you have to look at it as sum of parts and then as individuals.....
Our back 3/5 compliment each other, so arguably make each other look potentially better than the individual actually is.
Adams/Keown & Pallister/Bruce been examples.
But Maguire has proved himself at the top level, against the prem and worlds best, something our current lads have to.... yet.
Harry was arguably also the best defender at last yrs Euro’s, so to that end I would say Harry has it, but our lads are closing in!!

In fairness, we played two decent teams in the World Cup - Belgium twice and Croatia. We lost all three.

Harry is a great defender, unproven at international level for me though.

Walker - Jagielka - Maguire - O'Connell - Stevens wouldn't be a bad back 5, with Egan, Naughton, Lowton unlucky to miss out.

We've had some outstanding defenders over the last 10 years

Maguire is undoubtedly a top level defender but he never could have played such a convincing skinhead in This Is England.

Fair point, but don’t think you could pin either loss at Harry’s door
He was also in the team that played Spain (twice), Holland, Brazil and Germany. Total goals conceded during those 5 games? ONE.

If he was a ex pig player they would be telling any fucker listening that their boy nearly won England the World Cup!
Let’s be proud of our lads, not question them.

This is true. And he is a very good defender. Almost like an old school centre half still making it in the modern game really.

He's quite slow relative to premier league standards. Fortunately his positioning seems to make up for it generally.
