Maguire comment

I had the unfortunate pleasure of being at Old Trafford on Tuesday, Harry Maguire (and Robert Snodgrass to be fair) were by far Hulls best players.

I've seen Maguire a few times on TV recently and thought he had improved, however seeing him in the flesh I saw by just how much - his positional and leadership qualities were immense. Was getting lots of comments by those Man United/neutral fans around me, also understand Southgate is monitoring him closely for the future.

The situation with Maguire leaving was understandable (to me at least), he'd been making noises for a couple of seasons about needing to play at a higher level to develop and all this meant was us being in the Championship which we never provided. He needed the move but only Hull came in for him and they knew the situation therefore they got him at about half price (IMO), the shame for Maguire was he should've been utilised much, much, more before now. I'm putting this down to unfortunate circumstances, hopefully there is a sell on clause.

As he say's, he's still relatively young...I hope he continue's to improve and get's a decent move.

He was great for us from such a young age...

if you don't have something else lined up.

..and this has been our major problem, time and time again selling our best players at stupid times when we can't/won't replace with decent quality...hopefully thosecdsys are over now with Wilder.

I was at the Hull Swansea game, and to be honest Hull have a decent depth to their centre half options. Shit game mind.

However, I also saw the Man U game and agreed that H was by far the best defender in the pitch. Won his tackles and had the knack of knowing where to be at the right time. He has developed since he left, and was always going to playing with better players against better players.
And that's why he HAD to leave us. He wasn't going to improve with us at the rate he is now. Money is one thing, but to the young footballer getting better is their biggest goal.

In my opinion, it's time for him to look for a move elsewhere. See out the season with Hull and then look for another move to a premier league side. But wherever that is, he now needs to be playing week in, week out.

I think he only had a year left on his deal and wouldn't extend it, but due to age and academy pedigree we still held some cards. We would've received a tribunal fee, which takes into account appearances, international recognition, value of offered contract, and the years the player spent in the club's academy system - If memory serves . The trade off, was whether we should keep an unhappy player for twelve months and trust the tribunal to give us something close or exceeding the market value (Hull's offer)? Or let him go, and take the offer.

Personally, I have no problem with us letting him go: he'd given us sterling service for a number of years in which he could've moved on. He'd given the club ample opportunity to rise through the divisions and match his aspirations. I do, however, think we shouldn't let quality young players get within twelve months of contracts expiring - even if we have to give verbal assurances that they'll be allowed to go if they sign an extension, or insert formal release clauses to this end. If Maguire had two or three years left on his deal, our bargaining position may have been stronger, even with a release clause. The club has needed to get better at playing the game, hopefully with Wilder at the helm we will be . The deal with Macdonald also suggests a lack of diligence.

I noticed he did one of his runs forward with the ball...always loved watching him do that at the Lane. He's going to do one of those and bang in a goal one day.Good luck to the lad.

What was disappointing about that deal is we got burned the same way by QPR 4 years before with Kenny, and we made the same error again.

The Kenny one was even more stupid, I think. We negotiated a temporarily lower wage whilst he was suspended, in exchange for a release clause (can't remember exact figure, but way below market value). Laughable. Warnock must've been laughing his bollox off

I think it was around £1m. Even worse, the story goes that KMc had the car warmed up and ready to go within 5 minutes of QPR making the offer. Paddy got a lot of stick from the fans in the aftermath of this deal, very unfairly in mine and a lot of others opinion.

It was reported at the time that the clause was 750 grand.

We held all the cards there and screwed that up royally.

I wouldn't pay fifty quid for John Stones, totally overrated and not as good as Maguire.

I expect Hull will get relegated so it'll be interesting to see if he sticks with them or if they decide to cash in on him and sell him to a better Premier League side.
Just as well you are not our manager then because I reckon Wilder would certainly be in for John Stones, if he had say 4 or 5 mill to spend (on a lavish couple of signings) next season. And obviously if he'd drop to such a level. Every football club would certainly be prepared upwards of 50 quid for the guy. :) :D

He's taken ages to establish himself, and I think that's partly down to the system Hull play at the moment.

I rate him, but £2.5m was decent money at the time. The fact we didn't replace him is our own fault.

I think it took him a while because the previous gaffer preferred to pick his son. Harry is streets ahead of Alex Bruce and I reckon under anyone but Alex's dad, he'd have been a regular for some time now.

It was always going to be difficult with Bruce's lad taking precedence for a while, and having some competition with Dawson & Davies. It was a strange move at the time but I think Harry will go from strength to strength now and it wouldn't surprise me if one of the big guns stepped in for him.

In the England squad for the next World Cup?

We could all see the promise in Harry, but we sold him as a third division player so it took a leap of faith for a Premier league club to be convinced he could jump up two divisions.

Had most of his games been in the Championship then we could have reasonably expected at least double.

Generally I think we have sold well with a couple of exceptions.

The 'buy one get one free' Walker/Naughton deal hurt us. £4 or £5m for KN was reasonable but KW had only played a handful of games and we should have held out. If we'd sold him the following year, Spurs couldn't have recalled him on the last day of the window and we should have got more than £5m for him.

Blackman was a poor sale. He wasn't brilliant and a lot of his goals were penalties, but he was the only one scoring. £500k for your leading scorer is poor business if you don't have something else lined up.

.

Sure the Blackman sale was reported at £1.1 million? Still, killed our promotion chances that season.

Which is exactly what we saw in the ManUre v Hull game and saw for us. Top scorer for us at on point, was he not?

pommpey

Yep, he was top scorer under Weir but was eventually overtaken that season by the illustrious Chris Porter.

Its taken a while but he's started to hit some form at Hull, Hopefully gets a move in January for a bit of money

His opportunities have improved since their manager (and dad of one of his rivals for a place in the team) moved on at the end of last season.

Paddy had to leave Sheffield for his own good, get himself back on track.

Fair point N_a_C.

I just think Stones at the moment is an average to decent player that is prone to making regular mis-placed passes and the odd gaff. He's certainly not the finished article by a long way although I suppose if Guardiola cant make him a better player, then who can?

The Blackheath jury is still out on this one ;)

What ages were Harry and Walker when they became regulars with us? I am a bit new to this but interested in how it influences our young hopefuls

18-19 at a guess. As was Jags & Naughton to name two more. Didn't do any of them any harm and all came out of it with credit. Nowadays it seems the fashion to go through U21's/development/loan and bench warming for several years before they get a look in. They're either good enough or they're not, if they are get them playing ffs.

Thanks for that and now that the modern style of playing out from the back is in fashion and our young ones are being coached this way then it will be interesting to see when they will come through, maybe more relevant when we get out of this terrible league.
