Another big three points for the Blades who have now win 4 on the bounce after the set back at home to Hull. This performance was more akin to the battling and scrappy wins of Derby and Portsmouth, than the fluent and impressive showing that dismantled Boro in the week. However, the three points were the most important aspect of a game that had the potential to be a banana skin. After being second best in the first half and Luton spurning a number of chances and hitting the bar, United improved after the break. Incomers Peck and Holding helped United have more control of the game and it became more of a contest. Still, it was in the balance despite Brereton Diaz and Morris going close at both ends, until Ahmedhodzic found himself unmarked after a long throw was not cleared to steer home and win the game for the Blades. With Burnley dropping points in the lunchtime game, it was a massive three points for the red and white wizards.

There was perhaps surprisingly several changes with Gus Hamer and Tom Cannon not risked and Sydie Peck, Harrison Burrows and Callum O’Hare being used from the bench. In came Sam McCallum, Hamza Choudhury, Ben Brereton Diaz, Rhian Brewster and Tyrese Campbell. Luton restored Elijah Adebayo to pair with Carlton Morris.

Despite their lowly league position, Luton started on the front foot. The first chance came after only 2 minutes as Ahmedhodzic failed to clear the ball as Cooper came out to claim and it dropped to Aasgaard but his effort was straight at the United keeper.

Brereton Diaz tried to get on the ball but Luton were knocking it long at every opportunity and won two corners. From the second one Adebayo headed just wide. Luton came even closer on 14 minutes when Aasgaard got the ball on the edge of the box and his curling effort hit the underside of the bar. Jones should have done better with the rebound but hit it straight at Cooper.

Luton’s front two were winning everything in the air and Ahmedhodzic cynically chopped Adebayo down leading to the game’s first booking. The game was a physical one but actually any pockets of football were being played by Luton with Doughty and Aasgaard pulling the strings. The Choudhury and Souza combination was not working again – as the Blades were having little possession and even less territory in the Luton half.

The home side continued to dominate and United were at full stretch with them targeting Clarke, as well as the two centre backs, aerially. Rak Sakyi did have a run and beat his man but his low cross was cleared before Brewster tried to get in down the other side but could not find a teammate.

Souza and Clarke were both cautioned leading to free kick opportunities for the home side and Cooper had to be smart to take one effort with another into the wall. Luton created a fantastic chance on 35 minutes when poor defending saw Luton keep the ball in the corner and Morris was allowed to come inside. His cross was on a plate for Adebayo but he skied his effort from right in front of goal. Robinson had completely switched off losing his man and it was a real let off.

Walsh then had two efforts towards goal and it was incredibly 9 efforts to 0. Finally, the Blades did break out as Souza and Ahmedhodzic combined with the ball slipped through to Campbell but his effort was turned away from Kaminski. It quickly moved back to the other end as the dominant Hatters looked to make their advantage pay. Aasgaard had a curling effort from a similar position to where he hit the post but this one went over. The half time whistle came soon after and United were extremely fortunate to go in level at the break as the home fans cheered their team for an impressive showing that should have had them comfortably in the lead. For the Blades, the inconsistent team selection allied to a similar lack of cohesiveness game to game was shown again.

There was expected to be changes at the half after such a poor showing from the Blades and so it proved with Holding and Peck on for Rak Sakyi and Brewster. United went to a back 5 and seemed to want to try and stem the flow of the long balls coming forward. The Blades did settle better but Luton created the first chance as Doughty sent over a cross that Morris flicked on and Cooper pushed the ball away. The ball switched instantly to the other end and United had a great chance. Campbell stood up his man and sent over a delightful cross and led to Brereton Diaz seemed certain to score, even if it was a tight but thudded his effort against the pod from less than a yard! Despite their lacklustre performance, this was a fantastic opportunity to score.

Luton won a free kick after a soft foul on Souza but it went into the wall. The next phase of game up the hour mark was relatively scrappy. United had at least stemmed the traffic of balls coming into the final third and were also winning more of the 50-50 stuff. Holding had given some composure and given an extra body to mop things up and Peck had been his usual lively self.

Despite United now being in the game, it was still a contest lacking quality. One came on for Campell and Burrows replaced McCallum. There was another great opportunity for Brereton Diaz as the ball dropped but he blasted over the bar. The game now moved into the final 20 minutes and Souza was penalised again with the Luton fans asking for second yellow. The free kick from Doughty saw Naismith get up at the back post and head down but Cooper got down smartly to make the save.

O’Hare came on for Brereton Diaz and the Blades won a free kick on the left. As the ball came in One’s header was pushed away by Kaminski. The visitors were at least pushing Luton back and creating some chances this half and the goal came with just over 10 minutes to play. The long throw from Robinson was not properly cleared. Burrows hit an effort from outside the box and it was blocked but O’Hare hooked it back towards goal and as most of Luton came out, McGuiness was playing AHMEDHODZIC onside. The centre back kept his composure and coolly slotted home for his second goal in a week! The Blades celebrated with a pile on, in front of their fans who were packed behind the goal.

Luton had not scored at home for 3 games before this and needed to register to not create an unwanted record, that they had never done before – in failing to score in 4 straight games at Kenilworth Road. United had a chance to seal it when One helped on for O’Hare but the midfielder went too wide and his shot was blocked from McGuiness. Luton won a corner in the 89th minute but Cooper punched clear. There was 5 additional minutes of stoppage time to be played. Alli and Bowler came on for Naismith and Walsh but United saw it out professionally and Burrows smartly won a free kick just before the full-time whistle. With Burnley dropping points, it was a big win, albeit a less than convincing performance again but at this stage of the season, the results are of course all important.

United – All those who just saw the result and did not go or watch it on TV/a stream, might just think it was a workmanlike 1-0 away victory. I suppose it was but I cannot dress it up, it was a poor performance again. Just so glad to get the win but it is worrying how bad we were again to begin the game and how timid and slow we looked. We are starting games (Boro apart) on the back foot and not taking the games to other teams. We end up almost waiting for things to happen. We were playing the bottom of the league who were in dreadful form so was strange to see how we started (selection and how we played – but both linked. We did make the changes and did improve in the second half but if we had not scored – then you could still say it was not great but the winner kind of papers over the cracks a bit. The counter argument is, we were more solid and the back 5 helped as did the players who came on and we created the better chances. We took on and saw it out. However, we need to see more complete performances or I suspect when we play the better sides like Leeds (and arguably an in form QPR) we will not get so lucky. Just hope we see a side and performance, more like the Boro one, than the majority of the others. That is the concern, today was more in keeping with a lot of what we have seen since Xmas? Still despite this, we got a huge three points, kept a clean sheet (somehow!), and managed to not risk Hamer and maybe rest a few others (might have been easier win if we had not done this mind!). We are top of the league, at least for a few days, so I am probably being way too over critical but the performance was not convincing even if the win was hugely important. Luton will always go direct and make it scrappy but seen other sides take them apart recently so not great we made such heavy weather of it. At the end of the day though, whether it was a fluent and dominant win or a scrappy, late winner, you still get the same points.

The first half we were wretched and like the Pompey game, the opponents could have been at least 2 or 3-0 up. We made several changes (way too many in my opinion) and went back to the side or most of it that struggled v Pompey with two defensive midfielders. It did not work again and Luton, whose confidence must be brittle, came out and gained confidence early. They really played on our centre backs with two strong and physical centre forwards and won all the loose things. We never got it down and on a bad pitch, it became a physical battle but any decent football they played more than us. We were sluggish again and it was like last Saturday all over again. Without the players who could press and harry, we ended up sitting back too much and inviting the ball over the top and into their forwards. Aagaard missed a good chance early on, Adebayo headed wide and then Aagaard hit the bar. Jones missed the rebound. Adebayo then missed a sitter. They had other chances too. We offered little and at one stage it was 9 shots to 0. We finally had a chance at the end of the half as Campbell got in and forced a save. Overall, we were really bad and looked nowhere near the 2nd team playing the bottom team. They, like Pompey, probably could not believe how bad we were and we were losing the ball cheaply but mostly never had it and just defending and trying to hang on. It was a bizarre approach but not helped by the wrong selection. I get Wilder may talk about ‘red zone’s’ and managing players but we did not have a game for 9 days after this and we are now in the final stretch. Not sure it is quite the time to keep rotating things and now we need to only be making the odd tweak here and there surely?

We did make changes at the break – akin to the Pompey game and also changed the formation and it made us look more solid. Holding was steady and Peck at least gave us some legs in midfield that could carry the ball. We did have the better chances actually with BBD missing a sitter and another one over the bar. Morris had one flicked header and Naismith another saved before One had his header pushed away. The goal we scored came from a long throw – which we rarely score from but was kept alive by O’Hare and Anel, as he often does in these positions, finished really well. After this they sort of ran out of belief and we saw it out. The second half was better but we still were not great. It was just better than the first half! In the end, one to just file as three points won and move on.

With Leeds next up, we must see a performance like Boro, if we are to beat them. They are good side but can be got at defensively but be interesting to see if Wilder plays a back 5 or the two defensive midfielders (and goes cautious – as he did at Elland Road?). I hope we just play the side we played v Boro (maybe Holding for Robinson) and try and hurt them rather than always worry about the opponents. We are at home too. We will see but should be an electric night under the lights. Think they are the best side and will be the favourites but know now that if we beat them we would go top (and have played the same number of games) and that would give us a real momentum boost for the run in.

Ratings:

Cooper 6.5/10 – Saved a few straight at him and then one hit his bar (commentator said he got a touch but not sure he did) and generally was not well protected as the high balls came zooming in. They had a few go just wide and really should have scored but missed, more than him keep them out first half. Second half he pushed a header away but did well to get it away from goal and then saved another header at the back post. Punched a few away too and just looked really solid. When I look across the city at his counterpart and see his error to cost them the game, I realise what an unflappable keeper he is and rarely makes mistakes.

Clarke 5.5/10 – Better in the week but struggled again today to being the game as he was outmuscled and outran a few times and let too many crosses come in. He got a stupid booking which put him on the back foot. He did get better second half and won a few more tackles and was tighter to his man. Thought he finished the game quite well but not sure we have seen the upgrade we wanted over Gilchrist, at least yet

McCallum 4.5/10 – Always looks better just as a cameo sub. He won a few headers but on the ball he is sloppy and not sure he offers much going forward. Understand Burrows being rested as he has looked tired recently so not too critical of this change but his replacement is not really as good – even with Burrows drop off. He sort of runs around and throws himself into challenges/headers but rarely does he look composed or sure in possession. He too was too far off his man Jones and did not react to balls down his side quick enough. Ball comes off him too much after his first touch.

Ahmedhodzic 6/10 – Game of two halves. Probably more a 4 first half and a 7 second half but gets an extra 0.5 for the winner! First half he was poor. He struggled with the pace and physicality and nearly gifted them one early and got a booking. He looked all at sea and needed a dominant partner alongside him. He did set up Campbell just before half time. Holding came on and looked a different player as he got forward more, used it better and just looked less rushed and at full stretch. Took his goal superbly as he could have panicked but lovely calm finish.

Robinson 5/10 –Like with Anel, did not impose himself at all and they just won the headers and rough stuff. Switched off when Adebayo should have scored not once (header) but twice (almost an open goal). Just leaves him after he was right on him. Awful play for a so called muscular and committed centre half but in reality he is not that strong physically when it matters. Not sure Holding is that type of player and if not fit, why sign him? We needed a big, strong centre back and failed to sign one seemingly but he too got better when Holding came on and at least won some challenges. I still felt he lost his man (Morris header) too often but at least we did not lose every header second half and he finished much better than how he started.

Souza 5/10 –Quiet compared to the week as we never got a hold of the game. He too struggled with runners and their attitude first half and they won all the loose stuff. He got a booking too – looked a bit harsh out of the three first half but then could have had another as the ref penalised him twice more (again all seemed soft). He did better towards the end of the game but not his best performance.

Choudhury 5/10 – Poor again but got a bit better 2nd half. Helped a few on but generally got overrun and out fought and we never got a foothold in midfield. I am not sure what his strengths are yet. He looks quite slow as they ran off him and a few times the ball just went under his foot or he did not move to a simple pass. Not sure he and Souza were very good at all in a game where we needed to get hold of the ball. Surprised he stayed on but did finish with a few interceptions.

Brewster 4.5/10 – Weird to play him in that 10 role. He was rarely in the game at all but not helped by us not having it up the top of the pitch at all. He had one run down the left hand side and cross but outside of this barely noticed him at all.

Rak Sakyi 5/10 – One run down the side where he beat his man and centred but other than that he was not really in it as Luton dominated. Not surprised he was taken off as the game was very physical and played mostly down the middle. Felt a bit sorry for him today as we were defending all the game.

Brereton Diaz 5/10 –He missed a sitter when he hit the post and had another where he fired over but at least he did get in the right areas. He did look one of our more threatening players but missed the chances when they came his way.

Campbell 5/10 – He had the one shot where he was played in which was a decent chance but then did well to set up Brereton Diaz. He was a bit selfish on the ball and should have released it a few times but as with all the strikers hard to be too critical as never had the ball or played it up until the second half.

Subs -

Peck 6.5/10 – At least gave us some energy and got around the field. Few bits of combination play and interchange and a couple of decent balls in too – such as for the One header. We just saw more of the ball when he was on and got forward more as we had legs to carry it.

Holding 6.5/10 – Like above, did well when he came on. The 5 suited us more and we then ended up with more protection in front of Cooper and also did not get bullied as much. He won a fair few headers and mopped up. Just a sensible experienced performance.

One 6/10 – Actually, put himself about a bit – had a header saved, helped another on for O’Hare and at least gave them something to think about from a physical point of view. Mad he ended up as our lone striker after all those signings and strikers we have at the club. He did contribute today though when he came on.

O’Hare 6.5/10 – Looked lively and was involved in setting up the goal and also nearly got a second when he got blocked. Able to carry the ball and at least draw defenders. Surprised he did not start. We do not look as good when he does not play and his pressing and work rate is missed when he is not out there.

Burrows 6/10 – He has been off it for a bit so no issues him being taken out and when he came on, he did ok, with the shot blocked in the lead up the goal and another bit of good play to carry it forward at the end. Now he gets a decent rest before I expect him to hopefully start most of the rest of the games and get his form back.

Manager: Wilder 5/10 (first half probably about 1/10 and second half maybe closer to 7/10) but give him an extra point as we at least won the game. For me he has messed around too much and over thought it. Luton were rock bottom and we had to take the game to them and get the first goal. We made too many changes and ended up with mostly the same side that did not work against another struggling side in Pompey last week. We ended up with a low block and two defensive midfielders but they pumped it forward a lot and won so many headers. The two lads in midfield did not actually drop (at least one) and help the centre backs. I felt one could have sat behind or at the side of the centre backs and helped them out but we ended up with just knock ons and loose balls lost and then they went from there with several chances. I was surprised how badly we started the game even with the changes but seemed timid again and seemed to sit back. He got lucky we were not behind. He made the changes and we were better. We saw more of the ball, the back 5 helped us be more solid and eventually we nicked a goal. However, I think he has to keep the same side and set up now for most of the season. He said the players were arrogant last week, but I would level the same at him today for his selection and for trying to change it too much again – especially when it did not work last week! We do not have long left this season and we cannot throw games away. I think he did get fortunate again but must not make these mistakes again or we will not get away with it v Leeds/QPR etc. Still, it is another win despite me not being convinced the set up and selection to start with was right. He will argue it’s a game over 90 minutes and the subs/side finished the game stronger. I would argue Adebayo takes one of two great chances or the one that hit the bar goes in, he has egg on his face. I hope he learns from this for the rest of the season. Credit to him for changing the formation which was a brave thing to do as on the surface it looks like we were being more defensive and in the end we had more of the ball and created more, even if we had less forward players on in the pitch and a defender, who if he had been in a 4 may have had to stay back, scored the winner!

Luton – They did do much better than I thought last season and had a plan and stuck to it and worried some of the bigger sides. In the end, despite the praise they still went down but certainly seemed to be in games more than we were much of the season. I did think they were the most stable of those that came down last season with the manager and most of the squad staying. Losing Barkley was a blow but they have a decent core of the side that went up. They never really got going and have struggled to make Kenilworth Road a fortress and become in truth a bit of a soft touch. The defeats piled up and confidence eroded. Their style is quite limited in terms of it being direct and maybe at this level sometimes others can play this way too. However, I still thought they would be around the top 6 at least and am shocked they have been near the bottom. Edwards inevitably went but thought they may go for an experienced manager but Bloomfield had not been manager for long at Wycombe, even if he has done realty well this season. They still have a lot of power and pace and experience and it is incredible they are in a relegation battle. I do think they will have enough to pull clear but are going to have to start picking up points and have some tough games coming up. Plymouth at home is big in the week and then a local derby at Watford but face Pompey at home too in another big game before going to Burnley.

They will be gutted they were not a couple of goals up at the half but missed chances despite a good performance where they took the game to us and were sharp and dangerous. They got behind us and were able to send some very good crosses in. They looked strong and physical and showed all the best qualities of the Luton side that did so well a few years ago. Still, they missed chances and after the break they did regress and it became more even. BBD misses two good ones for us. They have a few headers but nothing that clear cut and in the end, probably are caught between trying to get the win they desperately need to get off the bottom or just taking something from the game, after such a bad run. In the end, they did not get out from a set play and we score. They sort of gave up after this and never really looked like getting a leveller. They looked a side that does not know where it’s next goal, let alone next point is coming from. Today, they deserved at least a draw and maybe more on the first half showing but that is kind of why they are at the bottom and we are the top, as cliché as that sounds.

Opponent Man of the Match – I think Adebayo, despite his misses, is a handful and would have liked him at the Lane (preferred us to spend some of the cash on Cannon on a centre back and brought someone like him or even Morris in -been much cheaper too!). Doughty puts a dangerous ball in too but the lad Aasgaard looked very good. Did well at Wigan and earned a move up the pyramid and he was the one that got on the ball, tried to create and had that effort that was unlucky not to score.

Opponent Weak link – They competed for the most part but McGuinness, a bit like Robinson with us, always seems to have a mistake in him. Lost Cannon on the run first half and then the goal he completely fails to get out with the rest and played us onside despite the appeals. Believe he cost 10 million which seems way, way too high. Isaiah Jones always looked good at Boro and felt he was going to be a top player but has lost his way and struggled today to make much impact.

Referee/Officials – Lewis Smith. Got booed off from the Luton fans at full time or the officials did. Not sure why? He booked ours for very little (Ahmedhodzic maybe deserved it but was quite early). The Souza bookings and free kicks throughout were soft. Their fans may feel he should have gone off for persistent fouls but not sure any of them were fouls at all! They got one booking Nakamba, for the foul on Campbell but that was harsh too as right in our half. The rest of the game, I felt we got very little and he kept getting in the way too, for both teams. The goal was onside despite them complaining. Was just bad defending. So again not quite sure why the officials got booed off? Cannot think of anything he gave decision wise against Luton at all?!

Report mirrors my thoughts. We won, a definite banana skin with Lutons umper lumper style of play. JLT struggles with physical forwards causing him to switch off. They could have had 2 goals due to his lack of concentration. Anel is a different player with a more organised CB alongside him as Holdings cameo proved.

Expected changes but agree not sure why COH was rested after him being the difference against Boro. Don't understand how he felt Brewster as a 10 would work. It didn't and at least he recognised it early. CW is trying to get minutes into players such as Choudhury and even Brewster to an extent but its at the expense of performance on the pitch. Agree we have to play our strongest starting eleven for the remaining games. Weeds fan commented recently we had only had one consistent starter, mainly due to injuries compared to them having around six. Consistency is key to getting over the line and injuries apart we should concentrate on familiarity in terms of players and formation.

The conundrum is how we play against the Revie cheaters next game up. We all want to see us go at them from the off but our defence, Anel apart is seriously exposed to pace which they have in abundance. Equally their defence is suspect as Pompey showed in the first game of the season but Dull apart no one has gone after them since. We really need Seriki to be fit for this one but our injury recovery timescale has slipped with Moore not being available today despite statements he would be. Clarke may be an upgrade on Gilchrist offensively but not so when it comes to defending. A real prospect imo that CW will start a 5 against our Yorkshire rivals subject to Holding being able to play 90 minutes.

A scruffy 0-1 win away is always welcome but our luck has to run out soon and we are more likely to struggle against umper lumper teams like the Wall and the Pigs than teams who try to out football us. We have to hope that Hamer will be fit next game up as he like COH are integral to convincing CW 4-2-3-1 is the way forward from now on.

Love your reports mate but seriously 6.5 for cooper? He was faultless today
I'd say 6.5 - 7.but he only made one decent save of note all game - the flicked header. Two others straight at him.

He did what he had to and was faultless but didn't actually have loads to do. They missed the target on some of their best chances.

Hard to fathom how we've taken 9 points from Derby, Portsmouth, and Luton when on balance of play we probably deserved 2. It's not even that we've been really solid at the back--opposition have just missed big chances while we've taken ours.

No more Choudhury and Souza as a pair in the middle, please.

Reports are unbelievable mate, but to think "others" were straight at him is a limited understanding of a goalkeeper to be honest. they train all their lives to be in that position.

I am baffled by the team selection today. He went back to what didn’t work against Pompey. Once again the substitutions hit the mark though, so credit for that. Leeds may not be so forgiving.

Re Luton: will they really get out of it? Before their last 2 hard games they’d won 2 in 9 - home wins v Stoke and Derby - without playing anyone that good. George Elek was talking about this on the NTT20 betting show: Burnley were shorter odds today despite Preston being miles better than Luton, which when you step back from it is daft. It’s got a very Sunderland 2017-8 feel about it. They are now a bad championship team, but people cannot accept this.

Brewster tried to pass the ball, he came back and got a few blocks in and yet he scores less than Rak Sakyi who did nothing, Brereton Diaz who missed from a yard out and couldn't control a medicine ball and even Campbell who strolled around like he'd lost the guide from his guided tour.

You're getting predictable Deaders, all we need to do is see the result to know how you're going to score the players.

Deadbat gives players the score he sees fit. They may seem harsh to blades supporters, but at least he is consistently honest, and unbiased with his appraisal of players.

Wilder takes a big chance bringing a defender on for a striker and going to a back 5! Were Luton really that good, or did Wilder hope to see out the game from half time onwards? Maybe nick a lucky goal to scrape the points?

As it turns out the back 5 put Anel in the right place for the winner. No one saw that coming.

I prefer to wait for Deadbat’s report, than read some biased mug pundits report!

He has his biases, he's admitted it before so stop blowing smoke up his arse. I like reading his reports, he puts a lot of work into them but if I disagree then I'll say so.

Rak Sakyi beat his man down the left and put a good ball in. He was not given any service at all. Brewster was played in the 10, granted not really his best position but I barely recall him touching it. He was not an outlet nor did he affect the game.

He went off at HT too as did JRS. There was not much in RB and JRS but I'd argue I'd want more from RB as he was central and we game got mired in a battle. We needed him to come back and help out more. JRS was simply not given the ball which a winger needs.

Campbell and BBD missed chances but at least were an outlet. Campbell put a great ball in for BBD and had one other shot- might have done better. BBD should have scored granted but he looked the most likely answer again at least found good positions.

Don't think any of the 4 were great and marks wise there's not a lot in it but the latter 2 had far more influence on the game than RB hence my higher marks.

Brewster played well v Pompey last week and I said so. Its odd your take as my views on players across the team have changed throughout the 3 games (very critical of BBD and Campbell last week) and my marks have reflected that. If someone plays well IMHO I say it and vice versa. I don't have biases. There are some players I rate/prefer to others as everyone does but I will try and call it as I see it on the day.

Catches to relieve pressure are also very valuable. If he was “faultless” (your words) isn’t 6.5 harsh?

It's hard to rate a keeper when he has little to do. If I gave him 10 that would seem crazy but base line mark is 5. He didn't make more than 2 expected saves and take a few crosses/punched one away. He was solid. As I'd say I'd have no issues with a 7 but he didn't actually have many saves to make.

He was solid. As I'd say I'd have no issues with a 7 but he didn't actually have many saves to make.
I actually don’t think it’s worth rating keepers out of 10 at all. Sometimes they don’t do enough, through no fault of their own, to be rated accurately.
