Harsh on Robinson. His link up play was very good especially in the first half

Thought Lunny has a decent game, thought we looked solid as a team throughout and looked to hit on the counter...however

I have seen some 'stats' saying he completed 7/7 long balls. This is absolute tosh, I remember a time where he received the ball off Robinson who swivelled into space. Lundstram tried to pick McG out over the top and it ran straight through to the keeper. I remember this well as Robinson was kicking off at not receiving the ball back.

So.....that's at least 1 failed 'long pass'. Shows you can't really trust these stats.

Here's another one - Sky bet had a boost which featured 3 Maguire tackles, the game ended with him completing 0 according to Opta.

In Sky's own report, they claimed Maguire made more interceptions, tackles and Blocks than any other player on the pitch.

It's a slightly uncomfortable situation to be in, isn't it?

Would Lundstram be in my first choice XI? No.

But you can't deny, when given the chance and working on the basis of judging players on their merits, he did a great job.

He created 2 of the most clear cut chances or Big chances that we had, for both McGoldrick and Robinson and he was also the one who put McGoldrick through when he flashed across goal. Nobody else came near that level of impact.

Not his fault they couldn't put them away. He could have been a three assist hero but for his colleagues' profligacy.

Much as we may be predisposed by him being the guy who couldn't step into Coutts' shoes, he's had over a year to gain maturity and to develop his game.

Some player's games are more suited to the top level. Maybe his is?

Good thing is, we have options. But based on his first game in the PL, he'll be of use to us at this level and by no means as just a grafter or blocker.

It's a nice conundrum for Chris to have in what will be a challenging season.

These Lundstrum discussions remind me of when we had “Mister 50p foot” Chris Montgomery. Monty seriously seemed like a parks footballer football wise, but he was aggressive, brilliant engine and great tackler. League 1 suited him, where he was pretty good.

When he moved up to the Championship he looked so technically limited that at times he made me laugh because he was so crap.
However he gave 100% and gave our midfield defensive bite, with his workrate and tackling.

When we moved up to the PL everyone was worried that Monty would be a joke and outclassed but ironically his “destroyer” style made him surprisingly more effective in the PL than he was in the other divisions. Lundstrum has far more ability than Monty but we seem to be using him in a similar role mainly because Norwood (and even to a degree Fleck) are too lightweight defensively.

The irony is if we were playing Championship teams where we dominate and see loads of possession then Lundstrum wouldn’t get a game.
But if we play matches we were are often under pressure and out of possession then that makes Lundstum and Besic really important players for us.

Suspect away from home Lundstrum or Besic will in the early days start in the 11, only when we gain confidence will we set up more offensively.
Where as at home Freeman and maybe Ravel (if he gets up to speed) will replace them as starters.

I thought Lundstram was ok today no worse than anyone else in midfield, created two good chances and one Kozluk like cross into the crowd. I realy don't understand why some fans slag him off, some were at it before a ball had been kicked.
I wouldn't be moaning at anyone after today's game remember more than half the team were playing their first ever game at Premier League level, bound to be a few nerves on show but I think CW called it right we kept it solid and grew into the game against a team who for the last few years have been comfortable around mid table.

Was the first time in 3 years that a team played in the PL with no foreign player starting.

It’s fucking bullshit. Those stats are skewed by the period where Lundstram had to take over from Coutts, before he’d properly adapted to the championship. It was never Wilder’s plan to play him that often but his hand was forced until we could bring Evans in. That’s what’s fucked Lundstram up now, those performances after Burton when he was expected to replace Coutts.
