Lundstram Thoughts

I'm actually surprised at reading some comments and disagree with a lot of them.

He came onto the pitch in a time when we were being completely overrun. We took Samir off and put him into a midfield 3 where he has to watch Rico Henry and help with watkins. Which he did.

He pressed high up the pitch and looks extremely mobile and put an excellent tackle in. In the last 15 minutes between our whole squad we barely put a pass together.

I imagine he will start on Wednesday, hopefully put to bed some people on here who are so eager to criticise without looking at the bigger picture and current circumstances of the game.

Everytime I've seen Stearman he is the most vocal of everyone. He won every single header! Defensively he did everything right.

However when on the ball he makes some strange choices. He headed one inside and launched one forward for no reason.

I understand and agree with your post. However a centre half who lost the ball 2/3 times from in possession but having a sound defensive play is what I will take all day.

JoC lost the ball many more times but it's okay as he's not new and under the spotlight.
Agreed, I'm just used to Jake Wright telling JOC and Bash where to be if you see where I'm coming from, STEARMAN was much better than previously, they're still getting used to eachothers play, it will come, they're all going to get better with time.

Looked a little bit off the pace of the game when he came on,or is that how he is,dont want to be harsh as its the first game, maybe he will get 90 minutes in the Walsall cup game.

Whats your thoughts.
Agree, needs to get up to speed, but when you come into a game like that you have to slot in and try to get involved. Not easy to do when your team are under pressure.

I'd be surprised if the team on Tuesday isn't a very different one to Saturday, those that played little or no part on Saturday:

Eastwood,
Jake Wright
Baldock
Lafferty
Lundstram
Brooks
Duffy
Thomas
Hanson
Lavery
Ched

Depends on how fit the injured players are but I would imagine be massive changes. We are on TV away at Boro! We have to get a fresh team for that.

Our experts obviously play their football on computers. They've clearly never come on as a substitute and tried to assimilate the established pace and dynamics of a game that they've only just joined. That was particularly difficult against a fast footed, quick thinking Brentford team. That won't apply to all opposition we face, even in this league of titans.

Forming an opinion on Lundstram based on 15 minutes as a sub is as unfair and barmy as deciding that Stearman (excellent leader of a superb back 3 yesterday) wasn't up to it before he'd kicked a ball in a proper match.

Correct, we should be judging them on the firmness of their handshake and how many tattoos they have instead. Or perhaps base their ability on the model of car they drive, or how many pairs of new trainers they possess. Seems as valid as judging them on a 15 minute cameo.

And deciding Blackman was not as good as Eastwood after 90 minutes at Eastleigh

If the answers are - limp, full sleeve, Audi, then I have made my mind up. Unmitigated twat ;)

To be honest, thought he looked pretty dire! Well off the pace, and a statue for the time he was on the pitch. Came on to shore up midfield but did the opposite. I think that's a honest answer for you.

I'm concerned about him to be honest.
He's not Leonard, he's not the box to box midfielder who can be a bit of a general in there... but maybe he was never supposed to be.
It's far too early to judge at the moment though.
He's more of a back up for Coutts than a box to box, we still need somebody in that position as only Basham fits the bill currently and I think he's doing pretty well at rugby CB and I'd like him to stay there.

I still don't understand why after just two short stints on the pitch and about 10 days at the club we're getting threads like this so soon to be honest. I thought that did ok without being spectacular yesterday, yet is the second negative thread started about him in a week, absolutely zero slack being cut for the kid by some, and if we're not careful he'll be the new whipping boy before he's even had time to settle.

We don't have the luxury to wait for players to be good enough, not ones we pay out for. Our squad is thin, which is what Wilder himself has said in his last few interviews. Players that come straight in have to be able to make a contribution, and be good enough. He looked lost to me and didn't stop what he was brought on to do, put a stronger barrier up in midfield. He might come good, I hope he does, that's just what I saw from when he came on.

Don't like to question CW but thought it was a bad substitution imo and looking back I'd say he would agree too we weren't comfortable enough to sit back and absorb the pressure and if we are honest we were lucky to get away with it.

The substitution just made the team sit back and invite Brentford onto us which was far from ideal. I think it may have been first game nerves.

We've literally seen him for about 60 minutes in total and have had two threads about him not being good enough.

Mental.

Came on, gave the ball away, then kicked it straight out of play. Looked very slow.

My post is based on first impressions only. I say it as I see it. I'm not Marty Mcfly! In 6 months he might be great. We need players that can come straight in. That's just my opinon.

I would hate some of these blades to be my gaffer when I was working crikey he came on when we were strggling being new to the team put him in a very difficult position.Trying to pick up the pace of the game when the opposition was going for the jugular ,we came through thanks to the. Team effort .with hindsight may be Wilder got the substitution wrong ( he's not god so does make the occasional mistake ).
Lundsramwill be better for the experience
We just lost the plot a bit.
We played similar against Mill wall last season (desperate to see the out ) but hung in there and won 2-0 great 3,points and not one player should be criticized as the team ethic was spot on.

Came on when we were up against it though, so not the best conditions for him to show us what he can do.

This is not just aimed you but That's nonsense imo - the season is 40 plus games. If it takes a few weeks or so to be fully up and running then that's fine.

People seem to be forgetting he hasn't had a pre season with us or much time to get used to the team or system. By all accounts he started slowly for Oxford in league one before getting much stronger in the second half of the season - I would expect it to be similar in the championship.

Let's not forget fleck was in and out of the side for the first month or so last year. After a couple of games you'd have got pretty long odds on him being in the league player of the year shortlist. Jack O'Connell took a few games to settle too, would we have been right to write him off?

Don't get the mad rush to pass judgement players based on 20 minutes or so and a couple of posts after the Eastleigh friendly.

Agree with all of that other than the header inside bit. My immediate thought on that one was that Jack was back on his heels and had he been moving forward as he probably should have been, then Stearman's cushioned header would have fell at Jack's feet as Stearman intended.

And you're welcome to it.

In my opinion it is very unfair to judge him on 20 minutes yesterday which is all I've seen of him. For the record I wasn't over-impressed but I was more puzzled by the substitution itself, or at the very least the job he was asked to do. I'll reserve judgement for now.

It is also very unrealistic to expect every player to come straight into a team and click immediately. Again, in my opinion.

Dire?

I'm sure that's you honestly thought you saw Anton, but dire? Really?

His previous career, including captaincy and best player of a decent Oxford team, is cast aside by experts in the blink of a blinkered eye...and at 23. Yet George Long is still a mere kid learning his trade. we're told.

Funny old game...

I agree with every word of that. Frankly, it is impossible to disagree with it and still claim to be sane.

I feel fairly confident in predicting Lundstrum will be a key player for us this season.
I feel equally confident in predicting Long will have a torrid time.

He may Sean; He may not. He could be one of Tufty's rare errors. One thing's for sure though. Neither you, I, nor anyone else, is in a position to make a reasoned judgement.

Stearman, another being castigated before he'd kicked a real time ball, played the perfect 'Jake Wright' game. Almost unnoticed but always shouting and organising and in the right place when it mattered. His salute to the Kop at the end demonstrated a footballer who cares and, no doubt, inspires.

Stevens already looks totally at home,Stearman,as you say had a stormer yesterday, and I thought Samir was excellent(new signing albeit not shiny new). Blackman looked solid. I have no reason to suppose Lundstrum won't be a big player for us,and neither,I suspect do you. The Tufty Club has very high standards for potential new members.

Yes. They even held a Lenny-Off at Southend v Blackburn, yesterday. Such is the competition and desire to become a Mighty Blade...

Lenny may regret not forcing his move through.
We may not, although I wouldn't be unhappy if/when he does rock up.
