Lundstram’s Swagger

When he came in to replace Coutts initially, he got it in the neck for simply not being Paul Coutts but he was slow, off the pace and didn't offer a lot. Couldn't get in the side in the promotion season and then, to my utter disbelief, there he was in the starting line up away at Bournemouth. I was shocked initially that he hadn't been let go in the summer, never mind be starting in the Premier League!

To be fair to him, he took his chance and did well for a few months but ever since the contract stuff started happening then Berge signed and pushed his nose out of joint when he started being left out, it's allowed him to dine out on that purple patch even more when the rest of the time, he might as well have not been on the field. I'd like him to sign for another Premier League team just to show him up for the charlatan he is because outside of our bubble, he'll be shown up for the level he is and that's League One.

Watching him this season is bringing back memories of when he was brought in to replace Paul Coutts. I remember when I first saw Lundstram play I immediately thought that technically he looked pretty tidy, but that was literally all it was. It's easy to look like a busy deep-lying playmaker if all you're doing is showing for the ball and then immediately switching it sideways. Show for the ball again, oh and it's out to the right back this time. The longer this goes on you start thinking "are we actually going anywhere?". The beauty of players like Paul Coutts and Oli Norwood is you can give them the ball and they will unlock space and find ways of going forward. They're quick on the ball and in the mind. Lundstram has never had this. He didn't suddenly develop it last year, he just benefited from other players unlocking the space for him. If you think of Lundstram's performances last year, his best moments were popping up in good positions off the ball and finishing chances. His "playmaking" extended to one-twos out wide with George Baldock. Fast forward to this year, the play of the whole team is suffering, meaning Lundstram can't benefit from other players' good play. In reality, he is the player that we always knew he was. We just hate him this year because he thought he was better than he was. And because we're doing so poorly, we need a scapegoat or two!

Goes back to a point I've made a couple of times where we lack intelligent footballers who can create anything on their own, they're all looking at each other to produce something and are coming up empty. The goals for column is enough evidence for that last season, never mind this time round.
Lundstram's days of feeding off his team mates are long gone and as we've already seen, if there's an onus on him to create anything himself, it's not going to happen. His bridges are as good as burned after Saturday's shit show

I could understand playing him, if needed to put him in the shop window.....But we don’t. So pay up his contract and fuck him off now.

Does anybody think we should have kept Paul Coutts for at least another season? I know he’d broke his leg but he was still only 30. I was surprised they kept Lundstram and got rid of Coutts. Would have loved to have seen him and Duffy in midfield.

His career path since he left doesn’t suggest he’d have become a PL midfielder. From the anecdotes I’d heard of Coutts from various sources he was a nutcase and probably lacked the application to become a top player.

I know sweet FA but that’s surprised me that he was a nutcase. I know what you mean, step up from Championship to the Premier is a huge one as were are finding out in a few instances.
