This lad is as good as any player I have ever seen age for age in 58 years watching United and he's not 18 until July this year.

With the greater stability of finances under the new ownership the board ought to set their stall out to ensure we do not sell ourselves short in the further development of the player who has been with us since he were now't but a lad. Congratulations to the Academy staff over the years.

What do we do with him now?

1. Give him a healthy contract and make him the main man in the team for years to come - not a realistic option?
2. Sell him at the optimum time, not too early and not for peanuts.
3. Insure him for big bucks for starters.

As a club we have the experience of developing quality young players through the Academy and selling them. Lessons should have been learned about how to motivate the lad to sign a contract and to believe he is still developing as a player with us. Inevitably big clubs will have him on their radar. A 16 year old from Norway has just signed for Real Madrid and Reed will have been noticed outside the UK I'm sure.

At some stage SUFC have to develop as a club and everybody connected hope and pray that the day arrives when we stop being a selling club. However the realities of the situation cannot be ignored, Harry Maguire left us for 4 times his salary at Bramall Lane. Has it helped his game in the short term? Possibly not, though he is training and learning alongside quality players week in week out and learning all about the Premier League even from the bench, while banking £3/4 million per annum.

Grass roots football has suffered since the Premier League was created, in fact that's why it was started by big clubs in the first place - greed. As a small club on the wrong side of the tracks at present we are at the mercy of clubs who could shell out £5m without a thought. We should make sure we get far more than that one way or another.

No response whatsoever to this OP and yet this is a continuing major issue for the club, the player and us fans. It happens every time.

Whatever will be will be I suppose. Personally I hope we watch him for 2 years or more, sell him for at least £10m and get him back on loan for a year after that. That must be the best scenario. The club knows that, the player knows that and we fans know that. Mind you there will be the usual outcry when he leaves, there will be plenty who have a view then!!

Ensure he is kept on contract so he doesn't get snapped up on the cheap.

I'm sure premier league clubs will be aware of him. Mellissa was snapped up before he made a first team appearance. Walker had only made five when he went.

Vultures will soon be circling if he has a run in the starting line up.

The Spurs fans I chatted to after the game on Wednesday identified Reed as our best player, and were shocked when I said he was only eighteen.

He got handed a three year deal in august, so when the time comes to renegotiate his contract (i would guess June next year) we should hand him a new one.

Nothing to get worked up about.

Great potential, but he's only 17, don't put too much pressure on the lad. If he is good he will be sold sadly. When was the last time we held on to a decent player?

Was excellent defensively the other night, as was Scougall. Got their positioning spot on to cut out that little ball into the man in the hole. It suprised me how defensively aware Reed was but I probably shouldn't have been given how good he's been previoisly.

Up to us to get to the Premership otherwise they will all fuck off, not the players fault, money talks.

But if we do get there based on Hull being richer than Lazio now keeping them will be hell of a lot easier.

If they do realise their potential the top four clubs will always take them. ask Southampton.

The lad is from Barnsley and him and his parents are very grounded . All associated with the club , realise the great potential he has , even at 17 . The family also realise the great opportunity that Mr Clough and SUFC have given him . Sticking with SUFC can make him a better player with regular league game match time . Many a good 17 year old with anticipated great potential , loose there way , when bought by a bigger club . If Reed was 21 / 22 then the situation would be completely different . He is a increasing asset for the blades , so for one i am going to enjoy watching him play ,for years to come at the lane ,and hopefully in the championship.

Hopefully the stability with the Prince means we can build a team around the lad for he next few years and he fulfils his promise with us...depending just how good the lad is though, he could get an offer no one could refuse.

When I see him play, he is that mature for his age, it's easy to forget how old he really is

His play belies his age

Excellent little footballer and I'm really glad to see a midfielder come through the academy for a change, as it always seems to be defenders in recent times

A lot of his mates are at Barnsley FC . He could have gone to Barnsley but believe it or not Barnsley release a lot of good potential youngsters for being too small , and Finished up at the Blades as a very young kid. Perhaps we owe a debt to Mr Pemberton and co

I think a number of so call professionals said the same thing about another small stature player who plays for that world renowned club in Spain.

Also look at Hazard at Chelsea.

I know we all get high on new signings , but we sometimes forget the gems we already have.

Jags. Persuaded him into one more attempt at promotion. And we got promoted...

Yep, I love watching him playing for us at the lane even now, the last 6 + seasons he's not been as effective for us as he was tho........

He's grown up playing primarily as a defensive midfielder to be fair. It's been a big part of his game in the youth team along with the obvious talent he has.

If only we had this outlook when I went for my trial 14 years ago. Bastards.

In terms of Reed's ability, the lad is great to watch.

It's hard to put into words how much he has come on in the last six months. I never expected him to be doing so well in the first team so quickly; It shows you what playing with better players does to you. As I said to metty and Foxy in the pub before the Spurs game, my only real criticism of his game at the moment is his lack of confidence around the box, but that will come with age and more games. His touch, and composure on the ball is fantastic, and he's shown it against top players against both Southampton and Spurs.

If fairness WWF it depends where we are in the football pyramid.

If and when a club comes knocking (and they will) then we need to let him know that the grass isn't always greener.
We should use Naughton (involved in 42 games in 5 n half years at Spurs) and Maguire (involved in 6 games since going to Hull) as examples of not to go when the money men come calling. Surely not all footballers think about the money???
If you love playing football then stick with us lad.

or, in the light of Naughton, ensure there's a decent 'sell-on clause' in place.

This is the rub. You have to be very high if a big club takes a fancy to him, even higher than our 5 year plan would dare hope!
