Our current striking options will not be enough in my eyes. Leon Clarke hasn’t cut it at championship level before and as good as a target man Hanson is, we won’t be looking further than mid table with these types of players.

You only have to look at teams like Bristol, to see our strikers just aren’t as good.

I think Clarke started to look like what we thought we'd bought by the end of the season so I would like to see him given a chance to carry that into next season.
That and imagine the schadenfreude to be had if he scores the winner at the Swinery!!!!
:p

I agree,we should be keeping Clarke, even if it's a case of him just coming off the bench for the last half hour...He showed enough at the back end of the season, infact he was a class act on the run in.
The lad Moult looks decent on the video, but I've got a lot of trust in CW 's judgement ,so not worried.

But mid table would be an achievement in itself so let's not get ahead of ourselves...

Now if this was to happen would it be a bigger moment than when Alan Quinn scored the winner for us against them? I'm saying yes!

A
Not seen enough of him TBH. But here's a YouTube video. To me it looks like he's got a bit of everything.

Except the one thing we do lack - pace! He looks similar to Billy if anything. Taller obviously but I don't see Moult dropping the shoulder and skinning anyone with or without the ball, unless he's up against a slow defender. Not different to what we've got for me. I don't think there's anything in this personally, but you never know.

Which goal is classed as the winner if it ends 0-4 Sharp (2), Lavery and Clarke

Think he looks decent, and could be used like Chapman was last season? And Clarke certainly should score in the Championship, especially when fully fit..

3. Leon Clarke has played 208 games in the Championship. That's not bad for a failure. On the most recent form available, he was comfortably our best striker (yes, including Sharp). The complete dismissal of Leon by some is bizarre. I hope it's not some sort of agenda.

35 goals in 208 Championship appearances isn't particularly good is it?

It is.

He is not hoofy enough and can't kick it hard enough and long enough. We need 10 big lads over 6'4" to hoof it and one tricky (Scottish?) winger as plan B, in the unlikely event the hoof doesn't work.

No. We should sign Nick Blackman with a staggering 44 in his entire career, 12 of them in Scotland and multiple penalties included. He'd do a job.

Its odd that Leon was given over 200 chances to prove himself an abject failure. Perhaps he was contributing something else?

Time will tell, but on the most recent evidence we have, he's our best striker. He certainly merits (subject to pre-season fitness and form of course) a starting berth against Brentford.

He was fat in those days and used as an out and out target man. The fact that he's played over 200 games indicates he was doing something right. He looks leaner and fitter now and seems to be quite happy at the Lane. If he continues his form from the end of the season I think he'll be good enough.

What's Nick Blackman got to do with Leon Clarke's poor scoring record at Championship level?

He's also a few years older as well, his last Championship season in 14/15, he scored 3 goals in 26 matches. We'll see next season, but I'm not convinced.

I don't think he's a long term solution or good enough to get us up. Some players get better as they get older, wiser, more mature and see the end of their careers on the horizon. I think he'll be up for it.

I agree he has got better with age, he always seemed like one of those players that was a bit of a dickhead when he was younger (not just because he played for Wednesday).

I'd just like to see us sign one more striker who is an improvement on what we currently have and I believe we should be able to find a striker who is better than Hanson, Clarke and Lavery.

I'm with you there. I actually think Clarke is our second best forward, but he wouldn't get in any other championship side barring the 3 promoted clubs and Burton Albion. We need to improve.

I don't think Sharp is as much of a shoe-in to play most of the season as some. I actually think Lavery will get a decent amount of gametime. He has pace which nobody else currently has and is able to beat a mean, again not something our other strikers do.

Yes, I agree. I think we should go for a loan, for a kid who can offer something we can't afford to buy in a permanent signing, blistering pace and skill or a prolific scorer.
