I know we are very proud of having a "British" / "United Kingdom" side, but do you think, at some point, perhaps in Jan, we should look to widen the net a bit and scout for some talent on the continent?

I think it's inevitable, if we want to push on and have a team that can compete at the next level, we will need to consider options from abroad. I'd even go as far as to suggest that it could cost us less than trying to buy up players from the English divisions, because prices have gone mad here over the past few years.

I was looking at some of the names Forest have brought in this season. They signed up Guediora, an Algerian international, on a free transfer. Now, admittedly he's a bit old at 32, but you could see on saturday he was a class player, a class international player, for free. The one that took my eye, although he was only on the pitch for the last 10 minutes, was Gil Bastião Dias. He's a winger with pace and a lovely touch on the ball.

I was sufficiently impressed to look him up as I'd never heard of him before. He's 21 and is on loan with a view to buy, from AS Monaco. He was loaned out last season to Fiorentina in the Italian Serie A apparently. I don't know what fee is involved for a player like this - but I suspect given his age and his relatively unknown status, that it would be less than that of a player that may already have made a name for himself in English football.

At the very least, we should be considering all options, from home or abroad, if we want to turn a good side into an excellent one.

The answer my friend is yes we should, but I don’t think we will. IF and it’s the big IF we do go up, we won’t have much of an option in my opinion because once debts are paid off we’ll only be able to get 2 or 3 Premier League ready British players and we’d probably need to bring in 7 or 8 to have a chance of staying up.

Assuming we stick at 3-5-2
1 x Keeper
2 x full backs
1 x No 10
3 x strikers

Possibly other areas may need strengthening as well.

I think we should just sign good players, don't really care where they come from. I'd say it's highly unlikely that we'll start signing foreign players given Wilder's past habits and behaviours.

I think we have a united Kingdom/irish squad, but I agree with your general point

Post Brexit, the Work Permit rules could easily change. I worked, peripherally, on Work Permits for non-EU players. The basic rule for non-EU players is you need to be an established International from a higher ranking Country.
Designing a transfer & recruitment strategy around players whose Work Permit requirements are (today) uncertain is a clear risk.

I am. Usually have a few days on Malta in Jan. Always include a Sunday to watch back to back matches at the excellent National Stadium. Plenty of Cisk and Maltese hospitality.

Good call. I’m planning on the Canaries myself. :)

If we go foreign it will be foreign that already play's in the English leagues. I doubt very much we will be scouting the Spanish Segunda for a talent that doesn't speak English and may not be able to buy-in to Wilder's way.

Perhaps unlikely in January, because players coming directly from abroad are likely to take longer to settle in and be effective. Having said that, crossing the Pennines often seems to be a problem...

If we’re really lucky we could end up with someone from Benelux, a good English speaker and with the footballing ability of Davy Gysbrechts or Laurens ten Heuvel.

I'd guess Wilder already has his eye on the players he wants. Just a case of whether he kidnaps McCabes dog or vice versa before January.

If only we could see that whiteboard. Him and Carl will have been writing things like:

British, fast, cheap, good lad, nickname can include a “y” at the end, hungry.

Too cross to use an apostrophe again Sean Thornton?

You really must get that temper under control.

Dad makes me do it Si. It's part of your therapy now, after you developed that strange attachment to finding Wally.

You should have looked in the mirror as I suggested and then Mr Parker-Bowles wouldn't have had tocall the police again about Mrs Parker-Bowles red and white underwear going missing .......

"Very proud of having a British side"?
I 'm bloody not, a bit pissed off actually, when you look at some of our rivals recruitment from abroad, we are a joke. I know passports aren't cheap, but FFS, Watford astutely bought themselves out if this division with 4 or 5 quality sub £1m foreign players, never looked back. We are so insular with our recruitment it is sad, Wilder is as culpable as the rest if he lets it continue.

The average bin man in Spain speaks better English than most English people

I disagree, look at how many Spanish players in the premier league cant speak a word of English. I once had to stop in Elche overnight and my god finding a English speaker in there was almost impossible

Most of it is concrete or desert. But it’s warm and cheap. :)

Not true if you know where to go .

I'm there at the moment and spent the morning on a beautiful beach then drove into the mountains and had tapas at a lovely local bar and finished the day with several large vodka and tonics watching the sun go down , before a very nice dinner .

Now on my hotel balcony with a brandy and coffee ( temp 22 deg ) and thanking the Lord that I wasn't brought up as a pig .

Happy days .
