People always want the club to be doing whatever they aren't doing right now when it comes to recruitment.
For a time every post about scouting was "How come other clubs are poaching the top talent from the lower leagues? There are so many quality players in Scotland and Ireland."
It's understandable. I want the club to utilise as many avenues as are available too. Point is, Wilder's built this squad by buying players with a certain attitude, with a certain reputation, and it's worked wonders. It's not always as easy as just going overseas and finding those kind of players.
That clip that came out about transfer deadline day last year, where Wilder's on the phone asking a player he knows about the personality of a potential signing; you think he can do that for players in foreign divisions? Probably not.
Expanding your scouting isn't only a money problem, it's also a problem of developing a network of people you trust to find and bring in the right players, with the right characters.
Why aren't we finding treasures across Europe? Might as well ask why no one else rescued Fleck from Coventry, why JOC was an absolute fucking steal, or why Duffy has been wasted by so many clubs. Answer is, because that's where our management team feels they work best right now.
The rest of the country is asking how we assembled a team this good for nowt. The grass is always greener and that.
