Wonder what the odds are for either flouncing away or banned? The repeat offenders usually do one or the other. I don’t know who this is but time will tell, usually after some ale or a pandemic.
We could be related. I used to post on bladesmad as 1BobbyHatton.

'Derby' doesn't mean local, it means a 'highlight' or 'special'. It was a term invented to promote special occasion sporting contests - so the Epsom Derby, Aintree Derby - are special races run at a racecourse that has racing every day.
Hence the term 'local derby' 'Manchester derby' 'Sheffield Derby' there's no specific reason why a derby is a derby - hence the proceeding noun to clarify it.
In English football, the purist, original 'Derby' would be the FA Cup Final - a game of football similar to all football matches played all around the country, but with a specific occasion attached to it.
Sheffield United v Hull could be classed as a 'Yorkshire Derby' as both clubs are in Yorkshire, but as this is not really a special game, I agree it's not a derby, but not because of distance - just that we don't give a shit about Hull.
Both clubs aren’t in Yorkshire.

Hull and their The MKM stadium are 63 miles away, yet they have this weird notion they're our rivals and it's a local derby.
You wut mate! 🤔
Mansfield 23 miles

There is only one local derby to us... no other team matters and i hope we never play the fuckgng piggy cunts again.

YOU FILL UP MY SENSES...........

True, and since South Yorkshire was abolished in the 1980’s and no longer exists except as a Ceremonial County, Sheffield is a Metropolitan Borough - but I’m talking in the spirit of the old Yorkshire, the Ridings (meaning third in Norse) West Riding where I was born (Sheffield), North Riding and East Riding. You know what I mean!

I have a theory why the Sheffield derby (the one vs Wednesday) is the most important to both sets of fans in British football.

1) both teams actually from the same city / town

2) both teams historically very evenly matched

3) both teams are unlikely to win a major trophy, and very rarely compete in games of great significance (eg no cup finals, no European football), so the rivalry assumes greater significance as no other ‘distraction’.

4) both teams are incredibly well supported given the recent lack of success and Sheffield being a two-team city.

5) United & Wednesday often find themselves in different leagues so a derby between the two is a comparative rarity.

Taking the other derbies which could compare;

1) Liverpool / Everton
Both sides are historically fairly evenly matched (if not recently), however, Liverpool play many games a season of greater importance than their derby game versus Everton.

2) Man United / Man City
Again, a fairly even match up in terms of success and history. But both sides also play games of greater significance during the season, such as cup finals and European football.

3) Celtic / Rangers
See above

4) Spurs / Arsenal
See above

5) Chelsea / QPR / Fulham / Brentford
Chelsea dominate in West London and so there is not the feeling of significance of these derbies to both sets of the fans. I’m sure it is of great importance to the likes of QPR and Fulham, but probably not much difference to any other game for fans of Chelsea?

6) West Ham / Millwall
See above, one side historically dominates the other so they’re not evenly matched.

7) Forest / Notts Co
See above, Forest dominate

8) Bristol City / Rovers
See above, City dominate

9) Birmingham / Villa
See above, Villa much the ‘bigger’ team

WBA v Wolves / Newcastle v Sunderland / Ipswich aren’t even from the same place, so surely can’t feel the same?

The only other 2 derbies
The only other 2 derbies that I think come close to ours are Hearts v Hibernian and Dundee v Dundee United. In both cases, both sides are fairly evenly matched, historically, and in support. They also have very little to play for other than beating each other, so there is no other distraction to the rivalry.

But these Scottish derbies are nowhere near as well attended as a Sheffield derby, so that’s why I think our derby is the greatest in British football. Because by and large, nothing else matters.

I labour this point constantly, but the rivalry with Wednesday should be celebrated. Not only does it elevate our profile, but it separates us from beige clubs like Oldham, Huddersfield, Cov, Barnsley, Hull, Boro etc.

It’s fantastic.

Hull 63 miles - in a car, yes.

Rovrum 4.8 miles and Barnsley 12 miles. In a Chinook, possibly.

My definition of a Derby is a game where there there is a general mixing of the supporters of both teams at work or in the pub or whatever in the lead up and after the match
That’s also my definition but I take into account the overlaps between fan bases. So, take Chesterfield as an example. There are plenty of Blades who live, or work, or go to school in areas where there are both Blades and Chesterfield fans. For those Blades and the Chesterfield fans, it’s a derby. For Blades from north Sheffield, or the Rotherham borders, it’s not particularly. Similarly, for those Derbyshire based Blades, playing Rotherham or Donny is a bit meh (unless you’re in that east Sheffield area). The pigs is the big one because it matters to all Blades.
Even with that definition, Hull’s barely a derby (even if you take into account there’s quite a few Blades and Hull fans exiled in Leeds), if at all.
Chelsea v Fulham is certainly a derby, although I don’t think many Chelsea fans consider it to be their biggest grudge match, most would say either Arsenal, Spurs or West Ham. There are still plenty of Fulham and Chelsea supporters in the immediate area though, irrespective of the bandwagon jumpers, I know, I live in the area and see the flags and scarves in the windows of houses and cars driving around.

Only 1 derby on that list. A lot of local teams, but only 1 derby
