Of all the above Roy there’s only Thomas I would like to see back at The Lane , for me all the others ships have sailed if we want to move forward : not to mention some more in the current squad that have given us good service butwe now need better

Pre season this, pre season that...

What the fuck is up with some of these players and their fitness?

And let's get Hanson back. Absolutely top player.

Not good reading about Nathan Thomas. Sounds like he's just flopped there after a good start. Maybe tells us something about why CW let him go out on loan, a number of us were wondering.

Interesting read thanks Roy. Shows how the season reflects fans opinions. Thomas was the bees knees now he isn't because Shrews have missed out on autos. Although he did have a reputation for being billy big bollcks at Hartlepool. Reed from being the Messi of Divison 2 is now a bottler in big games as a result of Chezzy's relegation. Hanson we all knew how unfit he was credit to the Club for getting someone to pay part of his wages for a while.

Only Long and to a lesser extent Lavery come out with any credit. I doubt any of them will be here next year.

Cheers Roy
Interesting read there. Think we might need a car boot sale to get rid of some of these boys !!:)

Im surprised we didn't keep Hanson with how limited options up top have been. I don't imagine Bury are paying much of his wages. Yes he isn't a footballer but as an option to chuck on after 75 mins he's not bad. Having a lump is always a valuable option, especially in games where we need a goal and passing it from side to side in front of the opposition clearly isn't working. I would have genuinely been more encouraged by Hanson coming on than Leonard, in games this season where we were behind and needed a goal. If nothing else he can drag centre halves around and create space for our better players. Which in fairness he was good at last season. Signing him got us across the line when Clarke was injured.

Cheers Roy. With Hanson - it's not very often that someone is completely crap and yet I still feel like he was a good signing!

I won't be surprised if Long is on our bench next season. He's 24 so potentially another 10+ years of career ahead of him to keep improving. Someone might take him off our hands permanently but tbh I imagine his "problems" are more in the fans' heads than his own at this stage, if his Wimbledon season is anything to go by.

Good to see that a couple of these players are going to be in the playoffs (well, if they get picked anyway), another reason to watch a League One game now that the real stuff has finished :)

Unless the Wimbledon fans are heavy on irony, or totally ignorant about football, we could regret it if we let Long leave. I know others on here disagree, and his problems could re-surface, but he is a good young keeper.

I’ve seen him play. He isn’t. Calamity George lacks all the basics, as noted time after time.

As for Little Louis, mixed feelings from supporters of a non-League team. Who’d have thought it? No reports, of course, on League One substitute Mustavim Back-Whiteman because we had the sense to get rid permanently.

Reed, Long and Hussey are all out of contract so it's not entirely in United's hands whether they stay or not.

I wouldn't offer Reed or Hussey anything. Not sure about Long.

it really shows that Wilder knows best if that's true. he's a genius

like we all thought Clarke was way past it... he stuck by him

we all thought Thomas would be easily good enough for our team, but barely cutting it at Shrewsbury

It shows how much the ‘we all’ on here know, doesn’t it? Personally I didn’t think Clarke was past it at all and gave very little thought to Thomas.

You only have to say ‘winger’ and ‘we all’ suddenly assume that the player in question must be a latter-day Alan Woodward and ‘just what we need’. Thomas wasn’t and isn’t.

As for third-top goalscorer in the Championship Leon, he’ll have a part to play next season too. Not so sure about the increasingly immobile and anonymous Billy. Time will tell.

In terms of retention lists 101, I would offer the following question:

Do you see them contributing to the SUFC 1st team next season?

If the answer to that question isn't yes, then let them go.

If the jury is still out on a player, then it's probably in our best interests to replace them with a player who the jury isn't undecided on.

To that ends, we should be saying adieu to all the out of contract players unless other moves are going to bring them to the fore e.g. if Moore wants to be first pick and imho he shouldn't be at this level, then we may decide to retain Long as back up. Otherwise there are quite a lot who can move on to create space for better quality.

The only real decision to make is about Long, but I think he'll fancy a permanent move to somewhere he has less baggage and can be a definite starter.

Reed has excelled in the worst team in the football league. Wish him well at whatever lower league team takes a punt and I think he might have a decent career in the divisions below the Championship. Hussey might thrive at League Two level provided he can resist the urge to chin any of his own team's fans.

Lavery and Thomas evidently weren't good enough for us and have now proven they're not really good enough in the division below.

Not sure anything needs to be said about Hanson.

Getting rid of this half-dozen will free up some wages so we can strengthen with some players of the right level of quality for our division.

I'd be happy to sell Moore to fund a new keeper and keep Long and Eastwood as back up. Sounds like Long has come of age this season and I think he deserves another chance.

I say that because I think we need to strengthen there obviously, and Moore has actually not played that many games for his age. I doubt he'll want to sit around as second choice again.

If selling him allowed us to sign Blackman permanently I'm all for it.

Agree with this 100%

Ok Roy, you’ve delivered the goods and earned your break. You are consistently the top performing forum poster and as you know it’s not gone unnoticed.

At this moment I understand Foxy is preparing to let you buy him and Linz a beer. :)

Don’t stray too far from your keyboard I get the feeling you might still be busy this close season.

Once again thanks.

Agreed, very disappointing reading. Expected a bit more from Lavery too.

Back to your poisonous best. I made some tentative comments on Long, based on comments by people who have been watching him perform well in a relegation-threatened team, and on my own earlier observation (directly behind the goal at the Kop end) of a skilful young keeper who played behind a poor defence, mainly well, before suffering a crisis of confidence as young keepers sometimes do. I was merely suggesting that serious consideration be given to keeping him at the Lane, by the people whose judgement I trust. Your clever-clever use of offensive nicknames and attacking points of view that I have never expressed demonstrate that you have little respect either for young footballers or your fellow Blades.
