Roy's View From... Loan Update

Cheers Roygbiv. Could I make a cheeky suggestion for your loan updates please? It might be helpful to include a date or the match the quote relates to. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if fans have wildly differing views on how a player performed in one match, or whether the views are evolving over the course of the season.

(Admittedly less of an issue in this update where the views are almost entirely terrible 😂)

Great shout. I'm never entirely happy with how they read myself so I'll look into that next time

Curtis was given a golden chance at Peterborough. They're a fantastic team to join who have a great recent record of working with and developing young players, as well as playing fast attacking football. If he can't make it there then I don't he'll make it with us.

I remember in the early days Norwich fans raving about Anis Slimane saying he’s the tough tackling enforcer they needed.

I’m thinking WTF????? Are they deluded?

So it’s no surprise that they now think the opposite. I think he’s a nice player but his game isn’t physical/ strong enough for English football.

Cheers Panchero!

Fucking hell I'd completely forgotton about Slimane 😂 Norwich fans soon changed their tunes haven't they

Slimane comment from October... "Anis Slimane coming in and immediately having a hugely positive influence on and off the ball just shows what a terrible coach Chris Wilder is.”

Hahaha
They probably still consider Farke a god there, a dirty, unweshed wrongun of a god.

I tried to get something but only found one post that made absolutely no sense
it was probably Grbic's full time report on himself, since he as a footballer makes very little sense, hopefully they keep t-rex goalie and we get him gone forever!

Far too soon to judge.

Players develop at different rates. Loans aren’t always to see if they are good enough at that level at that time, they are to allow a player to develop, test them against better players, in different environments etc

Take Seriki had a few poor loan spells, but recent performances suggests he’s ready to contribute at a top end championship team. Pretty sure Peck had a ropey loan a year or two back.

It’s the lads first taste of football outside of Ireland, and still 18. Would have been a miracle if he’d been ripping it up in League One

I remember watching a video of Curtis that made him look like a world beater, then remembered the same could be said for Traore. Both doggers it seems.
Curtis is 18....Seriki is 22 and got similar to worse reviews on his last two loans. Osula and Jebbison were doing ok/well in League 1 at 20.

Curtis has got plenty of time to develop - just may have stuck him in slightly above his current level.

Nice to see that they are all doing well 😂

Especially disappointed RE Slimane as I thought we might somehow steal a decent fee for him.

It's the hope that kills you

So many people on here were saying we should have chucked fresh from Ireland teenager Curtis into that woeful premier league side....

He's been at a much lower level and is very young. It's a steeper learning curve for him.

Rotherham fans were critical of Seriki last season. Hopefully the players will learn from their loan moves and progress.

Curtis seems to be having a tough time. I thought at the time LG1 level would be too high for him. Think we would be best bringing him back and sending him to somewhere like Chesterfield.

Curtis - his signing came as a surprise, given that we already had Seriki, Sachdev and Waldron as young right back options. Obviously if we think the new player is significantly better, there is sense in it, but he's not shown that. When fans complain about "laziness", I often think there are other issues, lack of confidence being one. Hopefully Curtis will keep learning. As a type he should be aiming to become a robust, steady-eddie right back.

Hackford - not getting involved enough in games has been a problem for our youth teams as well. He has games where he hardly touches the ball. Then he'll often grab a goal and may be happy with that, but at his stage he needs to develop all aspects of his game. As a type he seems similar to Marshall Francis. But Francis is younger and always seem to get involved when he comes on for the U21, running, chasing, dribbling, shooting. Hackford needs to show more of his potential very soon or else the likes of Francis are going to move ahead of him in the queue.

Freckleton - I can understand Swindon fans saying he's struggling now, but may go on to become a good player. He has good attributes. He's figured for the first team in pre seasons and at times looked just as good as the senior pros. A week later he'd have a nightmare for the U21s. Obviously needs to find consistency, but it may not be easy playing in a team that is struggling in general.

Slimane - Norwich are winless in six games, so player reviews may be influenced by that. It was surprising that Wilder was so upset about him going. I don't see a future for him here and hoped that he'd do well at Norwich.

For comparison, senior league appearances at the age of 18 (all info via transfmrkt)

Curtis
53 - Irish Prem
13 - League 1
1 - Premier League

Burrows
25 - League 1

Seriki
1 - Premier League

RND - 0
.......................

And some top level Blades RB's for comparison at 18

Kyle Walker
5 - Championship
9 - League 1

Baldock 🤍
3 - League 1
5 - League 2
3 - National League

Kyle Naughton - 0

That would suggest Curtis is absolutely fine, ahead of where he should be, probably by virtue of playing senior football and impressing in an inferior league in Ireland - but also literally years before he should be nailing down a place in a League 1 team, never mind being close to ours.

Gilchrist, Arblaster, Marsh (all 20), Brooks (21), JRS (22) are all seen as exciting prospects and have years on Curtis.

I think Wilder was probably upset about Slimane leaving as it was late in the transfer window and we're pretty thin on the ground squad wise. We might not rate him, but he's another body to throw on for tired legs

That’s it, let’s call 4 (3 of which are young lads getting their first taste of league football) Sheffield United players “shite” - excellent 👌🏻
Have we never had a ‘shite’ player then? We’ve got some in the squad now. Luckily the good ones are playing most of the time.

He sounds just like my son in his under 8s team! He's a good player but just doesn't get himself involved while other boys on the team get far more touches
