Lundstram gets first refusal. Despite what people think, he played the Couttsy role when captain of Oxford. He’s self-evidently not as good as Coutts; very few are but Tufty will give him his chance. He’s a good player. Samir will be used more often as well. We need to bear in mind that one of the many great characteristics of Tuftyball is that it’s a 14 man game, flexible and adaptable.

The injury has changed the JTW landscape. I’ll be astonished if a ball playing general in the Coutts mode isn’t now the overriding recruitment priority. I’m not a great watcher of other clubs so I’ll leave suggestions to others. Someone who loves the ball at his feet, plays with his head up and sees the bigger picture. If he were not injured, I’d go for the former Derby midfielder Paul Coutts...

I agree on Lundstram and, despite others bizarrely rushing to write him off, Carruthers. As I mentioned on another thread, he’ll now likely get more chances to show what a good player he is.

On a more serious point I think Lundstram would be my initial choice to replace Coutts.

I see him as being the closest thing we have to a like for like replacement as Coutts, and although he hasn’t shone so far, that is mainly down to not having a great of opportunity and he is still making the step up from the pub league to la Liga.

If either Reed or Whiteman can come back to the Lane and make an impact on scene then it is all well and good, but sometimes lads who look like excellent prospects don’t kick on as much as we would like them to, and we have given them every chance so far to do so

To what point or purpose? We’ve lost our best player. We need someone of similar quality to help us grasp a golden opportunity. Send for a Doncaster substitute?

I despair.

Consider this:

Some of the people considering the possibility of recalling Whiteman as a result of Coutts injury aren't suggesting he's a like for like replacement.

I would imagine Lundstram will be asked to attempt to replace Coutts while he's unavailable - opening up the role of 'stand-by' midfielder.

Recalling Whiteman doesn't mean we intend to build a squad round him, it just means that should we need another midfield replacement, we only put square pegs in round holes if we choose to.

Spot on. Who’s Lundstram’s replacement on the bench for Tuesday?

We need to consider how Wilder operates and what he looks for in a player and part of that is experience. The players we've signed from the lower leagues have already proven they're too good for the league they're in.

Whiteman is still learning his trade. He's still inconsistent by the sounds of it. That's why he's out on loan; so he can gain experience which usually leads to less inconsistency and better decision making. I very much doubt he's ready to be a first team regular in a promotion chasing championship side.

He needs to stay at Donny and be one of their players of the season. If he does that, he'll get his chance.

I admit that it would probably be better for Whiteman's development if he stayed at Doncaster, I agree that he's inconsistent and I'm not for a minute suggesting that he should be a 'first team regular'

However, if Lundstram steps up and picks up an injury, it leaves us in an incredibly awkward position - I would rather have Whiteman as an option than nobody.

I think the recall rules changed a while back, meaning that we can't have him back before January anyway, which makes the thread a bit redundant.

This is why people need to get off Lundstram's back, Coutts has blossomed from transfer list to mister dependable, very big boots to fill. Lundstram is part of our squad because Chris Wilder wants him to be, if not he wouldn't be on the bench, and he wouldn't be coming on with 20 minutes to go. It would be someone else.

I know he will make mistakes, all players do, but look at the quality around him that he will be playing with (not just a 20 minute cameo), he will be playing with arguably the best team in the league. He will learn and and will grasp what his role his. We know he can tackle, we know he can score, we know that he has a great set of lads behind him, around him and ahead of him.

I am not saying the rest of the team will carry him, because I don't think CW and AK would allow that, those days went when Dean Hammond left the club. I have no doubt that we have a short list of players we have kept tabs on, and will be pursuing in January, however if Lundstram plays well, it will be his shirt to lose.

As we have all said, in various ways, let's get behind the lad, applaud him when Garry Sinclair announces his name before kick off, he needs our support just as we much as the rest of the team need his.

UTB.

No, we can't bring him back until January, which was essentially my point. In January we can bring someone better in, better than Lundstram. Even if Lundstram does well, we could still do with two good players in that position, for cover until Coutts is back, and so we don't have to rush him back. Centre mid is where we have least cover and I'm sure we'll address it in the JTW.

It shouldn't hamper the pathway for Whiteman either as, from what I've seen of him, he's more of a Fleck anyway.

Then injury couldn't have happened at a worse time really with the run up to Christmas,so who ever gets the job will be under a lot of pressure and will need our full support.
