Breaking news from SSN.

Liverpool's Chief Executive has stood as a witness for Sheffield United in the arbitration hearing today.

Rick Parry..............

Chief Executive of Liverpool FC since July 1998 (Chief Executive Designate from June 1997), Rick Parry played a decisive role in the shaping of football in this country during his six year spell as Chief Executive of The F.A. Premier League.

An unashamed Liverpool fan, Parry was recruited from his position as a senior management consultant with leading UK firm Ernst & Young in 1991 to assist in planning the new Premier League. Appointed Chief Executive in February 1992, the competition was officially ratified just seven days later by The Football Association, allowing Rick to proceed with negotiations for a television deal which was eventually awarded to BSkyB and the BBC for a then record bid of £214 million over five years.

As Chief Executive, Rick oversaw the development of The Premier League into one of the top professional football competitions in the world, with major investment in new stadia, increased attendances and an influx of major international stars. During his last twelve months at Lancaster Gate he brokered the biggest ever television deal in the history of UK sport, with BSkyB and the BBC offering a package in excess of £700 million for Premier League broadcasting rights.

Rick's experience is not confined solely to football, having prepared Manchester's bid for the 1992 Olympic Games in 1985 and later advised the Birmingham Olympic Games Council on financial matters. In the following year, he spent six months on a major assignment for The Football League before assuming the role of Chief Executive to the Manchester Phoenix Initiative, a major urban regeneration project which culminated in the establishment of the Central Manchester Development Corporation.

When Manchester secured the British nomination to bid for the 1996 Olympic Games, Rick was seconded to the bid committee for two and a half years as full-time Director supervising, amongst other responsibilities, the planning of a £750 million Olympic Centre.

Rick Parry was born on 23rd February 1955 and educated at Ellesmere Port Grammar School and the University of Liverpool. Upon obtaining his degree, he joined Arthur Young McClelland Moores in Liverpool as a trainee Chartered Accountant in 1976, qualifying three years later. Having spent a number of years in the leisure industry in financial controller positions, he rejoined his former firm (by then known as Arthur Young) in 1983 as a management consultant.

This is an interesting development - it certainly gives a bit more weight to our case.

Apart from the obvious insider knowledge Parry will have from the mascherano deal and the cleaning up they had to do around his signature, it's a genius idea to have one of the Founding Fathers tm of the premier league in your corner. It is bound to be very persuasive one way or another if they can get him on to views on the conduct of the decision making process and the normality or otherwise of the PL decision. Even him being there is a bit of a blindside to pull by mccabe.

What if Parry's evidence is supporting West Ham's case, and not ours?

The very same Liverpool that rolled over against an inept Fulham side that could well have gone down in Sheff Utd's place?

Methinks Parry has one eye on Benayoun, and the other on Tevez.

It's an interesting turn of events. I must confess I'm a little confused, I thought this arbitration was merely to see if the original panel followed correct procedures, and not to offer new judgement? Maybe it is a case of judging whether Parry should have been quizzed at the original hearing?

Perhaps he has been called because he used to be Chief Executive of The F.A. Premier League. He must have had some involvement in the writing of the rules and the giving out of punishments.

Sky have just said Fulhams legal team have been at the panel today giving evidence too.

Wouldnt surprise me if the legal teams from Wigan and Charlton are there aswell.

This is great news and makes our case more encouraging.

I couldnt agree more, although I'm not going to start getting dillusional(sp). I mean the ppl at the Prem are no better that jumped up politicians and how many times do we see those slippery bar'stewards get out of very tight spots.

Excellent songage! :D
Do you agree with whats happening though?
I don't think it's just blame, if they had got the punishment right in the first place we wouldn't have anyone but ourselves to blame if we had still gone down. But they didn't so they deserve to be put in the position they have found themselves in. Scudamore, Wet Spam and to a lesser extent Tevez are all getting put under the microscope like they should be.

The panel statement:

“An arbitral panel, made up of Sir Philip Otton, Mr David Pannick QC and Mr Nicholas Randall, is sitting in central London to hear the dispute between Sheffield United and the Premier League board.
“Sheffield United are represented by Ian Mill QC; the Premier League by Paul Goulding QC. Fulham are represented by Michael Beloff QC.
“Sheffield United are asking the arbitral panel to determine two matters.
“The first is whether the decision by the independent disciplinary commission on April 27 to fine West Ham, rather than dock points, was legally flawed such as to require the issue to be determined afresh by a disciplinary commission at some point in the future.
“The second is whether the Premier League acted unlawfully by not de-registering Tevez. Fulham are seeking similar relief.
“The arbitral panel have no power to decide what the penalty to be imposed upon West Ham should be.
“This will be within the exclusive remit of the disciplinary commission, if one is convened as a result of the arbitral panel’s decision.
“The arbitration is scheduled for two days and it is expected that proceedings will run into tomorrow. It is not yet known when a decision will be reached.”
