Trouble is whilst one or two may have deserved harsher punishments, quite a number have got far worse than they'd have got doing the same in town on a night out.

3 to 5 year bans and 200 hours community service for swinging and missing at someone having a go at you. Not to mention legal fees.

Not condoning any of it btw but not everyone caught up in it sets out looking for it.

What would you get for gesticulating and acting threatening in town on a Saturday night? Told to fuck off home most of the time.

I'm not with you for the taking a pop at someone (and missing) but gesticulating, punching the air etc. Anybody who has never done any of these things in a football related atmosphere has no soul. Indeed I regularly have worse things than this happen to me every week and the one time I reported it to the police a CSO turned up about 3 days later to take a statement and nothing came of it. (Except I stored her image in my wankbank for about 6 months but that's an aside).

If they're going to start criticising light sentences, they have my support, but they can start with murder, manslaughter and the like, then sort something out for serial offenders / career criminals.

On a different note I’m a voluntary litter picker in my local community so I resent the inference that’s it’s fit to be seen as a punishment. Not keen on dog shit and junkie needles though
