How do I sign up to be a donor ?

There are many ways to register, if you donate blood let them know you would like to be registered, they will take samples whilst you are donating, if you contact the other organisations they will send you or your doctor a kit to take blood samples, some new treatments for cancer use swabs from your mouth, register with as many as you feel you can, in advance thank you

For the past 10 years I have had a battle with the worlds worst enemy cancer, I don’t big it up, I just crack on and do the best I can with what life throws at me, I have a beautiful wife two amazing children, my eldest loves the Blades as much as I do and for these reasons I feel totally blessed.
I was told I would need a bone marrow transplant which is a scary life changing thing if ever there was, what you have to go through is unimaginable to most people, but unfortunately my brother is not a match nor is there anyone on the current Anthony Nolan trust who is a match, so yesterday I was told I’m as healthy as I can be , I’m doing well on the drugs I’m on and that they’re happy for me not to go through this procedure as it’s to risky, maybe in a year or two that will have changed but for now I can carry on with my life and family.
I just wanted to say a couple of things, this site has been an absolute life changer in my darkest hours, the funny one liners, the argument the crap that comes out sometimes has truly kept me going, I’m more of a lurker than a poster. I’m not after sympathetic response or attention I’m after as many of you to get your self registered with the Anthony Nolan trust and make yourself available to potentially save someone’s life and more importantly the life of their family because if you ever get that call that’s exactly what you would do.
And to all those who think this should be in a different area I looked for Blades with cancer and found fuck all, maybe the Mods could put a section in.
Good luck tonight and the rest of the season let’s hope we can make the promised land !

Don't want to turn this thread into an argument but there aren't any alternative medicines that have been scientifically proven to help beat cancer. There are a lot of people making a lot of claims, and often making a lot of money from them.

My wife’s cousin’s wife did the whole “alternative” thing, it didn’t work. An ex-colleague claims it worked for her (and I’m glad she got better) but how does she know, where’s the control?

I need to check as I’m sure I signed up to something like this when I started giving blood but it might have just been organ donation. I’ll certainly look into it and they should promote it through blood donors.

The reason seems to be the youthfulness (and hence efficacy) of stem cells.

I'm also to old to join but appreciate you flagging up
the importance of the register

it's a sobering reminder of the impermanence of our lives

I was brought up in woodseats with negative opportunities as they say
life at various terms is taken away a lot of what I value
but still we chip away....
