Apparently Chelsea have made an enquiry to Brighton for Dunk and have been quoted a price of £50 million.

The world has gone mad!

How much does that make O’Connell and Egan worth?
Worryingly this is further proof that there are not many good centre halves around and if Chelsea or possibly Man City come knocking with not only a good offer but ridiculous wages we may be forced to sell. But then again that is football and I can think of no one better than a Wilder to spend the cash on replacements if indeed they are required, not necessarily in this window but in the future.

Dunk is better on the ball than our boys. But that’s the issue a lot of these defenders are good on the ball and cannot defend.

brentford for example don’t rate the defenders on how good on the ball they are and rate players like Konsa ahead of Egan.

They don't want to sell him so stick a high price on. I get fed up of explaining it to people.

Egan is worth £4m as that's what his transfer was...

I'd expect us to ask for about £30m. Well I do now McCabe isn't here.

Egan was worth £4m, at the time we bought him.

His current value is somewhere between the minimum fee we'd accept and the maximum fee another club would pay. Whatever that is, it's a lot more than £4m.

Exactly. But until he is sold its all guess work. I don't see why asking for a stupid price is so silly. Just because that's an alien concept to this club under its previous chairman, doesn't make it wrong.

If we don't want to sell him, or aren't confident we could find an adequate replacement, then asking for a silly price is exactly what we should do.

I guess you would call him an established Premier league player now.

The last couple of games apart, Egan has been one of the best performing centre backs in world football.

Make of that what you will.

The thing is we dont buy from premier league teams, he's worth £50m to Brighton cos if they lose him they're down, so its relative to what they've got to lose. Take the kid from Ipswich, he'll take a bit of work to bring him up to PL standard but he'll cost us a fraction because to Ipswich, his relative worth to what they've got to lose is much less, in fact they could reinvest whatever they do make like we did with Brooks

Any first team premier League player with time on his contract and not for sale is worth 50 million if a top 4 club comes in.

Some of our fans are still not up to speed with how the Premier League works. If you buy Premier League players who start regularly then expect to shell out £30m upwards or £20m for a top Championship striker, want a bargain and you have to look to players who are not getting games or look lower down the leagues. Us being 6th in the top division will instantly add a few million to any player we go for you see other clubs don't have a clown like McCabe in charge who would instantly cave in at an offer of £2m and a months supply of Werthers Originals

I thought Dunk looked atrocious on MOTD. Granted its only 2-3 minutes but Everton seemed to run him ragged and all he seemed to be able to do was pull the opponent's shirt. If he's worth £50mil then the world has really gone mad

Are you also fed up of people saying there's a difference between the price someone pays and the value of what is bought?

You do not need to explain it to me I was just pointing out what is happening in the market, especially in comparison to the monies paid less than 12 months ago for the Ming donkey who plays for Villa.

If you’re a top six club bidding for a player then you’re effectively saying you think he’s good enough for the champions league. That puts a premium on his price.

So, if a top six club is bidding for one of our players we’d charge a similar premium.

(Top six being the six clubs that regularly challenge for the top four, have large stadiums and huge income, I’m fully aware of where we are in the league).

The reason we didn’t ask for silly money is because we needed to sell the players. It’s that simple. I don’t want to sell my car so if someone wanted to buy it, they’d have to pay over the odds, to compensate me for having to find a new one. If I needed to sell my car, I’d get market rate. If I needed to sell this week, I’d get less.

Whatever the pros and cons that are argued over, the fact that we concede fewer goals than most teams suggests that our defence, and let's not forget our midfield whose responsibility to stop trouble in it's tracks is an integral part of good defending, the value of any of our players should reflect our their performances and our position in this division. Whatever we paid for a player has little or no bearing on what they're worth now, it all depends on just how well they acquit themselves on a regular basis. To my mind, and I'm aware of his age, Enda Stevens has developed into a top class defender with great attacking skill. ES may have passed his premium valuation but to the Blades he's a top player who'd be difficult to replace.

All well and good, I do understand your point (I was going to use a car analogy myself). But we never heard "we need to sell" from the owner. It was 'when a big club comes calling' or 'his heads been turned'.

Your reasoning suggests we've had to sell players for the last 40 years.

And did we really need to sell James Beattie? Really?

Yes, we’ve always been skint. Read Garrett’s big book. Our attendances have often been wildly inconsistent and we’ve always had problems getting good sponsorship deals because for the last forty years Sheffield has been a poor city, with local businesses that couldn’t afford big sponsorship (as most had to sponsor both teams) and a fan base that had no appeal to national sponsors.

We sold TC because we spent money we didn’t have on the south stand. It was a financial disaster for us.

We sold BT because we’d gambled a massive amount of money on getting back into the PL in one season. Then, to make sure we didn’t, we employed Robson. BT was on something like £40k a week. We took a hit of around £7-8m in the reduction from year 1 parachute payments to year 2 parachute payments.

And at the same time, McCabe took a massive hit because of the recession. Just like the Lavers took a massive hit in the 70s when they built the new stand and as they were doing so, we had the OPEC crisis and a recession.

We’re the neighbours down the street who’ve got basic jobs but can afford to buy a house but only with big overtime payments. When the overtime stops, they’re in the shit.

By PL standards we have poor owners and a poor fan base.

Given Egan's form of late I'm pretty sure nobody would be offering anything close to £30m

That’s another difference between Dunk and any of our defenders. He’s played a couple of seasons in the PL so you’ve got a good sample size, a good body of evidence to show just what he’s capable of and how consistent he is.

Dunk is no better on the ball than O'Connell or bash, maybe Egan but that is debatable. All 3 are better defenders than him and that is their job. Looking at the fees quoted for some of those on here and the actual fees for Maguire etc we should be saying a min of $50m for Egan for example, otherwise why sell?

Talk of recent Egan poor form is laughable. He has had one poor game Vs West Ham. He has been easily the most consistent defender this season I have seen after Van Dijk who is a freak.

We have 5 or 6 players who are performing to such a level that they would (or should in my opinion) get into any other PL team other than the top 4. This, along with the magicians that are CW/AK are the reasons that we are 6th in the league.

Henderson, Baldock, Stevens, Egan, O'Connell, Basham, Fleck along with possibles of Mousset, McGoldrick and Norwood would be difficult to replace with players from teams in the PL below the top 4. Who would we take from Spurs or Arsenal for example? Aubameyang or Kane? I would have said Auderverwald, Eriksen or Vetognen but they have all been poor and look on the decline to me. No one from Arsenal springs to mind. We seem to have other teams players constantly bigged up when we are preparing to face them, only to be disappointed as our boys dominate them and make them have an off day.

We are riding the crest of a wave at the minute and long may it continue, personally I would like it to continue with the kind of players that we currently have. Ones who seem to give a monkeys about the club, work hard, celebrate hard and have a connection with the fans.

On a side note, I had an Italian here in NZ telling me today about an article in Gazetta dello sport over the weekend all about how we were showing the big boys in the premier league how to do it. Loved it.
