Lets talk about set piece defending

We were always good under Wilder with set pieces?
I agree that we were for much of the time (corners excepted, we seem to be crap at those whoever the manager is!), but when the wheels came off in the second PL season that ability, along with just about anything else positive, went down the river.

I'd be really intrigued to see the statistical difference having McBurnie on the pitch makes, I bet it's pretty sizeable.

There's undeniably organisation issues defensively, with players regularly scoring unmarked. The more intelligent defensive teams know opponents blocking routines and don't let it happen, hence why we've been noticeably worse at it in the Premier League. I still don't think we have any absolute monsters physically. When you look at the likes of VVD or even someone like a Zouma, they'll just dominate everything to win it. None of our players are that strong. Certainly no one like JOC, Maguire or Morgan of old. I seem to remember Trusty having really impressive aerial dual stats, but he hasn't looked impressive it that regard... Or any other.

Ultimately we lack the personnel and tactical intelligence to defend at this level, especially given the sheet volume we have to deal with.

Yeah we lost one of our better aerial threats in JoC and didn’t replace him.

The biggest team usually is amazing a set pieces. Its something we seriously need to recruit in the summer.

After Mcburnie we don’t really have any amazing aerial threat in either box.

Trusty will be good against other 6ft championship standard players. But in the PL there just so much better than him in the air. Some of these are the best in the air with so much more physical presence.

He was Marking Thiago Silva from the last game. It’s an mis match but there just isn’t anything else that we have.

I hate zonal marking, for the reason you rightly pointed out about the man getting the run on you.
But, thats what McBurnie does. He doesn't usually pick up a man. Does that only work because the defenders mark their men and it allows Oli to be spare and if they all marked a zone then we'd be constantly on the back foot? I don't know. But there's definitely room to mix it up and each player defend to their own strengths, and when we get a more settled lineup all defend as a single unit.
Even when you man mark it is normal to have zone men. McBurnie is tall, has good timing and bravery, so clears a lot of them from the most dangerous central area. He may have struggled more to mark one particular danger man.

Norwood is a bit small to man mark, but his heading technique is decent, so he's been used as a near post zone man, where he's also headed away a number of corners that were hit in too low.

Wouldn't be surprised to find Phil Jagielka back into the fold.

I much prefer man marking from corners than zonal. Zonal marking just breeds a lack of accountability.
Totally champagne. However, if we had enough players who can actually head a ball I'd go man for man with the exception of McB who you tell to try and attack the ball wherever it goes. Then for a fair percentage of set piece balls into the box you have 2 men going for it

Why when we concede a corner does every player get back in our box making it ten v ten. If you put the quickest player on the half way line 2 defenders will drop to cover and another would drop between the box and half way line. You then have a numerical advantage defending the corner and an outlet when you clear the ball

Doesn't need two to cover, just needs one moderately quick player to stick to your out ball like glue and tactically foul if needed. That, and our only quick player is currently in France

Considering the signings of Moore, souttar and Burrows, we now are looking stronger for set pieces.

What happened to the set piece coach?
