That's just a quick scan of who has come in on frees and loans (and one or two discloseds) from teams above us in the past 15/16 season on transfermarkt.co.uk

I know some of you might say 'fuck siging that cunt' or 'is that *** *** who has spent six years on the treatment table?' but back at you I give you Cuvellier, Wallace, Coutts and Kennedy.

Okay - they are players deemed to be surplus and not good enough. But they have been acquired, trained with and most often played with teams currently above our standard. Is that not logical progression or do we have to troll lower leagues and the like for playing staff all the time? Where is the 'Invetsment' in that?

Clear to see where the ambiton lies, isn't it?

We do need to be looking above, but throwing out the names of 2-bob wet-behind-the-ears youth players coming from the Premier League proves nothing.

What I see is that we've signed two strikers who would have garnered interest from every team in this division, not to mention some in the division above. Steve Evans would have fucking loved Billy at the NYS. We also signed a lower Premier Division quality right back last season too for over a million, not to mention big wages for players like Coutts.

The problem is not WHO we've signed, it's what we haven't signed. Namely, 2 or 3 central defenders that every fucker has known that we've needed for the past season plus.

And on the note of signing from the league above, we've got perhaps the most exciting (permanent) young player in the division. And last season he was playing at Ilkeston!

We've got as much ambition and spending power as anyone in this league. We've just been fucking idiotic how we've wielded it.

I agree to a certain extent but I think the most effective recruitment policy would be to pick the best from the league we are in. That way you're almost securing promotion for yourselves. If we go for any championship players, if they want to join us then the likelihood is that they are either un-proven or out of favour, both questionable status'.

Not sure what the point is, it's either PL youth players or established Champ players, which we've signed this season and the last few. Looks like another is on his way to us as well.

Is my point. There's quite a few decent aqcusitions in amongst that lot. Chris Eagles and Ben Nugent just two of them.

I remain to be convinced regarding those two.

I think the vast majority of our signings have come from the Championship have they not? And we've signed an absolute bucket load of players this last 3 seasons.

For me we're two players away from being an auto side, despite one poor result.

Eagles - a flair player who is far better than Baxter ever dreamt he was

Nugent - solid defender

I think we've been shopping in the right places to a large degree, it's just that those we've signed aren't in the positions we really need to fill as a priority.

We have a number of players who don't really fit into any formation well in this league.

There's also the elephant in the room of hardly ever signing foreign players.

Recruitment at this level needs to be a mix of experienced pros who can take us up and young loanees who at pace and spark.

To be fair I thought Scunthorpe were going to be the dark horses based on their signings and they lost to Burton at the weekend.

Not sure what to make of the opening day now I have looked at some of the other results in our league.

Nugent who presumably weighed up his numerous options at Champ and L1 level and signed for Crewe?

Eagles is shite and past it.

Take it we make Nugent an offer? I say this because at the moment we have McEverly and Collins as our vanguard at the back.

I cant see anywhere on Coventry site that Eagles has signed for them... so I wonder if any of the rest of your information is any good.... he is still down on skysports as being unassigned...

as for Nugent... he has played 23 league one games for a team who finished 24th in league one... having conceded 75 goals... if that's you ideal of SOLID.... jeez... we're in trouble...

Whereas, sitting at the back of Sheffield United's defence ...

(fill in the rest)

Aaaand ... down at Bramall Lane, our galacticos are in training. Today's new concept: Defending.

Yes, ours are shit
But they are no better

I can name 4 on that list I'd take, and that's being very kind.

I agree - some are bobbar. However, some are fucking astute acquisitions.

Every season we remain in this division thickens the glue that keeps us here.

"Mate, Nigel Adkins is on the phone."

"Who? Where is he now?"

"Sheff United."

"Fuck that."

Jacobs, Leigh/Laird, Anderson and Pearson would have been good signings for us
None of the others for me mate, sorry

Don't think we've had a bad summer, just Nigel has been blinded by a good pre season - as have most of us in fairness.

John Egan at Gillingham.....Chelsea player....looked good to me...

Eh? He was at Sunderland and we even had him on loan for one game and he didn't look great that night at Walsall :-)

Chris Eagles was without a club for a good part of last season after Bolton let him go, not sure he's a shining example of the kind of shopping we need to do.

Don't know owt about most of them so no idea if they've signed quality or shit.

It's worth bearing in mind NA has to manage upwards as well as downwards and it may be the simpletons who run the club didn't appreciate our need for defenders until Saturday. Or thought they could save a few quid by signing them late and not having to pay for them during the pre-season.

Tchya?

Collins = Six foot of immobile tactical shortcomings. He couldn't defend Gok Wan on a charge of 'not really being gay but just in it for the tits'

McEveley = Every time he's near the ball, people in the crowd start crying

Kennedy = Actually has a part time job in the club shop and is drawing incapacity benefit

McGahey = Actually left Sheffield United by mutal consent in 2012. Nobody asked, so they didn't say owt.

tchya? Is that an acronym or just a noise?

That list just serves to highlight a point I was going to make that nowhere has a centre half been signed that we could and should have gazumped.

So we wait, and low and behold, we've just signed a CB who's pedigree is thrice every other on that list. (I say pedigree because I can't say I've seen him play).

Sometimes a bit of patience is a virtue. Usually a chain of 3 or 4 signings is needed further up the pecking order for decent players to be available to a league one club. A lack of a new CB has resulted in a apanking at the weekend but I'd rather wait and take that one on the chin than spend a season watching mediocrity because we were too desperate to wait for the right men.

From that list I'd have been in for Stuckmann gotta still be better than Howard or long and Jake Cassidy might be a good signing for Oldham Ok he didn't do a lot at Wolves but he scored loads for Tranmere when they were high up in league one. I don't know enough about the young uns from the premiership to comment but for every Twiss or Notman other teams seem to find better like Benik Afobe.
