£5mil would give us a £50k a week contract over 2 years to offer to a free agent without denting the budget at all.
Is there anyone out there we could pick up on a free?
You forgot the agents fees and the signing on fee;)

Edit: and I forgot the loyalty, appearance and scoring bonuses.

Dead difficult this football finance lark

Do you have a source that isn't one of those shite twitter accounts that everyone falls for?

Adkins has already blown their budget on a bid to get Hammond out of retirement

Cardiff City singed Gary Madine for £6m ffs , and now he's a premiership player !! The mind boggles

I would rather have Clarke than that tosser any day .

wow... these are some good sources... and it seems they match a bunch of dross from the January window where apparently Swansea and Burnley bid 5.5m

He probably won't score 4 in one match and two consecutive hat tricks but I can see him getting double figures again Ricky. He was unplayable at times last season and I don't think it was a one off. If you look at how well he played in the end of the promotion season as well, I think he may have hit his pomp in his 30s, it does happen.

It wasn't just a one off or a fluke, he's always had ability. It seems to have 'clicked' for him at an older age. But he did slow down in the second half of the season, in terms of goals and physical condition - and I know there are team factors contributing to the goals. I agree that he's capable of getting into double figures again, but near 20 again seems a huge ask.

I'm sure we're trying to sign a new main striker and as it stands I'd expect Clarke to start about 25 games, and score about 10 goals. That along with his age is the sort of basis I'd use to determine his value.

If we did sell him we'd unquestionably need to sign 3 new strikers - which wouldn't be ideal.

I'm pretty sure he'd have no interest in the move though, even if offered a considerable pay rise.

A good source says Hull have made a £5m bid for Leon. Take it and run?

The same Leon Clarke who could have being signed by Adkins on a free when he was released by Wolves and went to Bury?! Nah, don't believe this mate.

Yeah I agree, he seems to be really settled and focussed so any move could be more detrimental to him than us. You're also right in that we need enforcements up top regardless. One to start and another who is a prospect capable if breaking into the first team. We also need to factor in Brooks who should be much stronger this term.

What a crock of shit.

1. Hull won’t be spending that many millions on anyone.
2. Let alone Leon Clarke.

If any club had bid that for Clarke, it wouldn’t be a rumour it would have been agreed and signed off. Wilder would snap hands off.
Ok we lose a good player, but he’s 33 and Wilder would see that kind of fee for a player his age as a no brainer

I don’t think the transfer market has gone this crazy!

£5m for a 33 year old Championship striker! Who comes up with this bollocks?

I'd love us to sell a player for money and then use the money to purchase a better player or players.

Surely with Leons age/injuries/previous Champ record before us taken into account, not to mention our previous reputation for dropping our knickers to the first bidder, if Hull did want him (completely plausible), wouldnt they start the bidding at, say £500k? Are we sure the source hasnt just added a 0 on by mistake/purpose? Because that seems far more likely than skint, badly-run Hull swaggering in with a £5m offer out of the blue?

Any new striker we buy will be a gamble. Great things were expected of Higdon and Sammon, for example. If we sell Leon we'd need to bring in someone better, who's also a good fit for the team and, like Leon, doesn't have a big ego. Remember Leon captained us last season and is a popular member of the squad. If we let him go there will be some big boots to fill.

One for them as knows better than us to decide on regards the deal I suppose, but I for one would be be sorry to see him go.

It's been brilliant watching a player in the latter stages of his career absolutely flourishing under a manager who know how to get the best out of a player. LEON! LEON!

It's a no brainer, really.

Chuck Billy in for another 3 million then we've got 8 to spend on two strikers to replace them.

They will be young , pacy , hungry and guaranteed to score more goals than those two old duffers and their names are .....

Err , I'll get back to you on that one .....

Silly season goes turbo and supercharged.

No way any club will be offering that sort of money for LC.

£2m, everything considered would be INCREDIBLE business for the Blades.

We acquired a more seasoned and established Championship campaigner in Clayton D for £50 grand FFS !!!!!

On the basis that we rarely re-invest the full moneys we bring in and that we couldn’t replace him for that amount - it’s a big no from me.

Exactly as someone else said, I don’t think he’ll score close to 20 again next season, but even when he wasn’t scoring goals his play was excellent at times. I think he’ll score 12-15 if given a similar amount of games. We need to bring in somebody next to him.

Not sure that I would consider selling anybody at this stage. Only David Brooks if we were to be offered silly money (circa £15m).

You mean let go the player that put the Wendy to the sword? :tumbleweed:
