Leon Clarke

He talked about a sea change in mentality when a family member died. That he wanted to achieve something in the game. I think this was under Flitcroft at Bury.I was very surprised how fit he looked when he first joined United, although he soon had to have a small op and was playing within himself until his comeback. He's always had the footballing tools.
His dad was murdered outside a pub a couple of years ago.

The evidence is very clear for all to see.

Sadly, Leon struggles for consistency.

He has been both utter gash and hugely impressive in a Blades shirt.

There is good Leon, as we saw Sunday, and bad Leon, which we have seen times many.

Being honest, as it stands, bad Leon is winning at the moment in terms of overall performance. We need to see more of good Leon before hero status could be even contemplated.

But Sunday was a good start. And under Wilder and Knill, if anyone can extract it, I am sure they can.

When he’s been fit, he’s generally ‘done it’ in a Blades shirt.

CW only has team players in his side so Leon must have changed.

So two goals against that pile of manure isn't enough? Something else at work here.

Yes and I know we had a team of fantastic heroes and Brooks was certainly outstanding but for me Leon should have got the MOM award. 2 gaols and an all round superb performance. As Gimli says a "textbook" performance. Let's hope he can stay fit and keep up this level. If he reserves his best for ex-employers then we should be OK tomorrow night against Wolves!
2 gaols? Did Di Canio get sent down for that fight as well?;)

My little insight to the question in the original post is this:

I was a student in Sheffield at the same time Leon played for the pigs. Being a student I would often be out with my tax dodging chums during mid-week to enjoy the cheap drinks.

I can't count how many times I saw Leon Clarke out, often in Crystal Bar, pissed up til the early hours. Needless to say he was a heavier man back then!

Similar to myself, as an older (slightly wiser) man he has realised going on the lash mid week while trying to build a career ain't the wisest choice. He's a lot leaner, fitter and more determined now.

Only thing that confuses me is I'm a stone heavier now than what I was back then :fattwat:

Leon has been outstanding since the end of last season and through to now. Given his CV, that does seem to confirm theories about Wilder's 'man' management, and getting the best in terms of a sense of wellbeing and performance by players. Leon must have been impacted profoundly by his father's death, and it must have taken time for this to have healed. So I think there has been a context to his career which is hopefully healing, and we are fortunately benefiting from immensely. Great signing!

But I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walks a thousand miles
To see Big Leon score

He's a goal scorer and that's it really. He didn't hold up the ball particularly often against Wednesday, but when he was involved in that it ended in 2 goals. But he's the best finisher we have I would say, marginally better (dare I say it) than Billy.

He'll get goals if he gets the chances and that's good enough at this level.

He's got Donaldson to keep out of the team if he wants to play every week and with those 2, Billy and possibly Brooks vying for 2 spots (more realistically 3 of them vying for 1 spot as Billy will play) it means we won't have to rely on Hanson (not good enough), Lavery (not really delivered if he is good enough) and Ched (apart from anything else, clearly injured).

Billy should be considered on merit like everyone else. I don't care for this 'special status'. If Leon and Clayton get the shirts and it works there is no valid argument.

Sunshine over Leon!

On the topic of Leon, has anyone got a picture of him they took, or have the rights to that they can put on his Wikipedia? Bit odd I know but it'd be nice to see him in a Blades shirt celebrating a goal on there instead of a Wednesday one looking a bit overweight.

What a week this man has had - to score 4 goals against 2 former sides who deemed him not good enough. He must really be on cloud 9!

What I love about Leon is that when he gets fit and hits form he is relentless. Well done old chap! Plenty in the tank ;)

Mauled em tonight..but what do you expect...a lion v a pack of wolves.. ;)
Fantastic performance Leon.

Thank you.

It’s partly down to the brilliance of Brooks. He pulls defenders out of position giving Clark the space. Brooks is a rare genius who can run at central defenders causing havoc. Clark is great at taking advantage of the situation.

Could have had a hat trick on Sunday with a bit of luck one just before he did score when he went to dink it over the keeper another when him and the keeper collided it could have fell anywhere and the one after Brooks nutmeg if that pass had been to feet he would have buried it.
He is in great form just now, you can't leave him out at the moment.

Doing exactly as he did for the last six games of last season. Knocking goals in almost every time he gets the ball. He's got a great, languid, casual air about it all too.
