I was quite surprised at how close our head to head is against Leeds United over the years

Played 84

Won 29

Drawn 23

Lost 32

I expected us to have lost a few more against them to be honest.

Since our first meeting in 1924 which was a 1-1 draw at the Lane, the biggest scoreline was a 6-2 win for the blades again at Bramall Lane in 1947 with the legendary Jimmy Hagan obviously making the scoresheet in front of nearly 32,000, this was our second 6-2 scoreline of the season but unfortunately the other one was a loss to Manchester United which was played at Maine road which I presume was down to damage to old Trafford from the war? I’m pretty sure I’ve read this somewhere before?

A few of the balding and grey haired brigade may remember a 3-0 victory in 1971 in front of 40,000 fans Flynn, Dearden and with Eddie Colquhoun hitting the back of the net.

Just 15 years later and with the rise of hooliganism and a pretty shite few years,

in 1986 we played Leeds in front of just less than 10,000 for a 3-2 victory. Morris (pen), Frain and Walshaw scoring

Between 86-93 we had a few rather convincing losses to the scum up the M1

We didn’t record a victory against them in 11 attempts which eventually came on the 6th April 93, only days after losing to them bar stewards at Wembley Brian Deane and Paul Rodgers scoring.

Since our first game against each other back in 1924 we’d played each other fairly regularly the longest period without meeting came between 1993/1994 and 2002/2003 season where we met them twice in both cup competitions beating them on both occasions. I’m pretty sure I don’t need to introduce one of the more famous moments in blades commentary history so I’ll just leave the link here “cracks one!!”

It’s seems iconic moments in commentary for the blades against Leeds go hand in hand. “Basham arriving”

This incidentally was our last victory over them.

I went to one match at BDTBL that United won. I can’t remember the date (1970s?) but fireworks were set off early and as smoke spread across the pitch we scored. The Leeds players complained to the Ref who ignored their complaints and re-started the match. The Leeds players were still complaining and we went and scored a second…. and sent on to win.

Can anybody fill in the date and scorer details? Thx.

I have a vague idea that Steve Cammack was playing but as I’m now in my dottage I could be wrong…

1st April 1975. Leeds were winning one nil and Cammack equalised late on. It ended 1-1.

Doesnt surprise me at all.

Not many people realise that Leeds United significant history only started from the early 1960's when Don Revie became manager.

From 1890 to 1960, that's a period of 70 years.
Both Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday were far bigger clubs than Leeds United.
Bigger attendances, more seasons in the top flight, more honours and trophies, better cups runs.

In fact we've still spent more seasons in the top flight compared to Leeds.
Sheff United have spent 63 seasons in the top flight where as Leeds have spent only 53 seasons in the top flight.

Leeds United only became a household name from 1970 to 1975, when they became one of the biggest, most successful and fashionable to support clubs in England. This was the period when colour TV became more mainstream and there was a national and Scandinavian audience watching football on TV. This is the reason why during the 70's LUFC gained fans all over England and even in Europe.

Great post. They were also very good at selling themselves. With their names on tracksuits, number tassles on socks, saluting the crowd and the fantastic kits, especially the yellow one. You could see how they appeared glamorous to the impressionable, as all that stuff seemed new to us. Still hated them mind! UTB.

I’ve seen a few people on here say they’d rather not go up due to the financial strength of the prem & the fact it’s a 2 horse race with no chance of competing.

So genuine hypothetical question -

Would you take a 4-0 drumming tonight but gain promotion at the end of the season

Or

4-0 win but Leeds beat us to promotion

A 2- 0 loss and promotion for the monetary value could be an option .......
