League One Promoted teams - How do we compare?

I've not checked the numbers myself, but after speaking with a pig at work today it sounds as though every team ever promoted has subsequently finished bottom with zero points the following season, so we probably shouldn't bother trying. We need to spend at least £10m on a brand new squad, and any player with us now who has ever been at a higher level will never be better than League One.

£10mill is nothing, can't even buy a decent championship striker for that much these days!

Ah you forgot to mention Leicester's plastic clackers maybe that's where Coventry went wrong,

If you remember that season though mate, Bournemouth were in the bottom 4 or thereabouts when they sacked their manager Paul Groves and then appointed Eddie Howe and threw over a million at it straight away and then won almost every game after they'd lost to us at their place. That was the season we should have gone up but we sold Blackman in January and Miller got injured for the season at Christmas and we were screwed. The points total of 84 reflects how poor a season it was and how Bournemouth were able to come from such a low finish to get 2nd.

That season really was a missed opportunity. We should have walked that league. There were no really good teams when there had been 4 the year before - we started with a 16 game unbeaten run despite not playing well and were top in February. Unfortunately we lost our best players for one reason and another, the sale of Blackman was ill advised to say the least, and our recruitment was poor on the whole.

I will never understand how Donny got promoted that year. If you can have a fluke season, they had one then. They got found out when they went up. It's a mirror image of what they've done the last 2 years, when a decent side that somehow sleepwalked into relegation have been far too good for league 2.

David Cotterill almost single handedly got them promoted that year with about 13 goals and 20 assists. He was going on a free in the pre season and I remember almost shouting at the internet when he signed for them and we seemed to show no interest, despite having only Flynn as the only winger in the squad. We ended up playing Westlake or McCallister as make shift wingers until we played Blackman there.

Hmmmmmmmm, do you think an egg sandwich would be out if the question whilst I peruse the facts presented to us.......?

BTL

"said wed go up , now we have"

Why would you want to mention the S6 lot in your strapline?

On paper we compare extremely well. Unfortunately comparing on paper does not win things.

I don'y really think we know just how strong leagues have been from one season to the next. Who is to say that when Bournemouth went up with 83 points the league was better than this year.
All you can do is beat what is in front of you and this season we have done that very well.

Looking at the gap between 1st and 2nd for previous seasons, at this rate we will have the biggest gulf in points over the past 10 years.

It still won't be enough to save us next season.

We are doomed. The wise S6 Massive have foretold of the mighty chasm between L1 and La Liga-Championship and we are doomed.

Doomed, I tell ya.

Doomed.

Here are teams that have been promoted automatically from League One this decade and their subsequent performances:-

View attachment 25862

Three teams have been promoted automatically again within 2 years.
Two teams have been relegated again within 2 years (Wigan are likely to make it three soon).
The average position of promoted teams is 11th but there is a definite downward trend towards the bottom end of the table in recent years.
Southampton have done exceptionally well and are boosting that average position.
Doncaster have done exceptionally badly and dragging the average position back down.

Those are the stats but anecdotally, I would say that Wolves are the only League One team that I've seen to compare with our current quality in the six seasons we have been down there.
They went on to finish 7th in the following season and have never looked in serious danger of going down.
Wednesday have struggled more than most promoted teams with below average performances until the last couple of seasons (post Chansiri cash injection / extortinate price hike).

I will update the spreadsheet in a couple of weeks to include the current season.
Unless we do something stupid like selling our key players, I think we should be looking at 10th to 12th place next season.

Updated to reflect the latest/final league tables:-

Sorry but this puzzles the hell out of me. Can someone put it into laymans terms for the unenlightened please and thanks

Of those teams that got promoted from League 1 to the Championship since 2010
  • Three have come straight back down (Donny, MKD and Wigan)
  • Two went straight up into the Prem the very next season in Norwich and Southampton
  • Bournemouth waited one more season before going up.
  • Norwich have yo-yo'd a bit
  • Donny have yo-yo'd even further
  • Charlton lasted 4 years before dropping again
It doesn't tell you that Brighton went up to the Prem this year

So - of the 14 teams that have been promoted out of League 1 to the Championship in the last 6 years
  • 3 are in the Prem next season
  • 7 are in still the Championship
  • and 4 have slipped back down and are in League 1 (with Donny slipping further but back up again)
Hardly evidence of a trap door from the gulf in class

Will that do for yer?

So it's a fifty fifty probability of staying in the championship but if we don't, there's a slightly larger chance that it will be because we go down again rather than up

We're the famous Sheff United and we're gonna win the league....again.

I've updated the spreadsheet to include the final positions from last season:-

2018 L1 Promoted Averages.PNG

Our finish of 10th place was easily the highest for an automatically promoted team since Brentford and Wolves in 2015.
Brentford and Wolves both slipped down the table for the next two seasons after 2015 though.
Last season was the first since 2015 that none of the three promoted sides were immediately relegated back into League One.

Interesting to see that Leeds and Wednesday have only finished in the top half of the Championship twice each yet our 10th place last season is seen as failure by some.

It also demonstrates that spending money guarantees nothing as both Leeds and Wednesday have spent bundles more than we (or they for that matter) can afford in order to achieve those 4 top half finishes between them.

Well done Chris Wilder and the Blades on a great season.

The key now is to make sure that we keep moving forward, and if that doesn't involve wasting money "investing" in players that don't produce, then so much the better.
