Here are teams that have been promoted automatically from League One this decade and their subsequent performances:-

L1 Average Performance.PNG

Three teams have been promoted automatically again within 2 years.
Two teams have been relegated again within 2 years (Wigan are likely to make it three soon).
The average position of promoted teams is 11th but there is a definite downward trend towards the bottom end of the table in recent years.
Southampton have done exceptionally well and are boosting that average position.
Doncaster have done exceptionally badly and dragging the average position back down.

Those are the stats but anecdotally, I would say that Wolves are the only League One team that I've seen to compare with our current quality in the six seasons we have been down there.
They went on to finish 7th in the following season and have never looked in serious danger of going down.
Wednesday have struggled more than most promoted teams with below average performances until the last couple of seasons (post Chansiri cash injection / extortinate price hike).

I will update the spreadsheet in a couple of weeks to include the current season.
Unless we do something stupid like selling our key players, I think we should be looking at 10th to 12th place next season.

Might be being a bit thick here but I don't get it....what is (P+1) etc and the numbers.....for example what does 42, 57 & 65 stand for alongside Doncaster....????

20 teams in the Premier League.
Doncaster finished 42nd in their first year after League One promotion (i.e. 22nd in the Championship).
Southampton finished 14th in their second year after League One promotion (i.e. 14th in The Premier League) etc

Edit:- Alternative view. No averages though:-

As I read it....the first column is the date they went up....the following columns are their league position in all 4 divisions every year after they got promoted from l1.

So, Norwich got promoted from L1 in 2010 with 95 points. The following season they finished 22nd....(2nd in championship) and got promoted.

Hope that makes it clear

Think it means P+1 means one season after promotion year,so P+6 means the figures stand for 2016.
The numbers represent the position of that team in terms of all 92 league teams ,thats my take on it anyway o_O

So basically only Doncaster and potentially Wigan have come straight back down after winning the league.

I think surviving is easily achievable especially if we look at the likes of Brighton, Wolves, Norwich, L**ds and Wednesday.

So basically, the message would seem to be - don't mess with the structure and spirit, but strengthen in some areas and we should be fine.

They had to get out of the football league quick smart since they got fined for breaking FFP rules.

No transfer embargo for them then while they are in the PL.

I remember that, but did not know the fine was still unpaid

If they get relegated (chance) they will have a mega parachute payment which will easily cover the fine, its all wrong, they broke rules and have profited from it and still are.

FFP is a joke, either enforce the rule properly or don't bother having it.

So MK Dons and Doncaster are the only two teams to come straight back down, with a similar number going straight up (Norwich and Southampton). Factor in Bournemouth going up in their second season and there are most instances of teams going up again in seasons 1 and 2 than straight back down. It's also only Charlton (so far) who have hung around in the Championship for a few season before coming back down; the Doncaster (L1) and Norwich (Prem) relegations were from divisions other than the Championship.

Very interesting analysis Sothall_Blade...though you missed a red box for Norwich's relegation last season :)

Interesting stats. I think we are a better side than the previous four sides that have gone up automatically. We are at least as good as the two before that (Wolves and Brentford). We will need to be as the Championship has become tougher in the last few years I believe.

We're a better side than all of the promoted sides before 2014 in my opinion (with the possible exception of Southampton who had some fantastic players). These comparisons whilst interesting, don't always give an accurate indication of how you will perform.

Personally I would take any position between 12th and 16th next season. Anything better would render me delirious with joy.

Leicester won League One 8 years ago today, preparing for the Champions league Quarter final now

So there you go.

Close a wonderful atmospheric old stadium, don't pay the builders for your new soulless bowl and hey presto the Champions League is there for the taking.

You won't mind if I don't get too overjoyed with your Leicester analogy will you?

Not at all,

Doesn`t always work though, ask Coventry o_O

Looks like the more points the team has going up the more likely to stay up on average. I dont think we need to worry about staying up -its just a question of how much we can strengthen to perhaps have a chance of a play off spot even!

Perhaps we need a new rule - each team should start the new season with the number of points they finished clear of the team below them in the league. Kind of like when you're unused minutes roll over from one month to the next. We didn't use those points this year so let's use them next :p

Bournemouth 83 points lowest points total for promotion are the only team that are in the Prem, footballs a funny old game.

If you remember that season though mate, Bournemouth were in the bottom 4 or thereabouts when they sacked their manager Paul Groves and then appointed Eddie Howe and threw over a million at it straight away and then won almost every game after they'd lost to us at their place. That was the season we should have gone up but we sold Blackman in January and Miller got injured for the season at Christmas and we were screwed. The points total of 84 reflects how poor a season it was and how Bournemouth were able to come from such a low finish to get 2nd.

Off track, but whatever did happen to Shaun miller?

The unbeaten run goes all the way back to fleetwood at home in January, 15 games!

I've not checked the numbers myself, but after speaking with a pig at work today it sounds as though every team ever promoted has subsequently finished bottom with zero points the following season, so we probably shouldn't bother trying. We need to spend at least £10m on a brand new squad, and any player with us now who has ever been at a higher level will never be better than League One.
