Let's be honest none of our other strikers score often, it's Billy or a defender generally - we did ok with Done before and Chapman back so a real loss but we should still have enough..
 
Lavery is the only striker at this Club who has enough pace to be in the starting eleven next season.
I hope to goodness he isn't badly affected by this injury.

Unlikely if it's a medial. It's not like he's on the NHS and gets fobbed off at Haywards Heath hospital just before he's due to go under the knife, gets given physio instead and still has problems twenty years later. I'm not bitter.

Whilst of course all of our previous managers would know more about the professional game than pretty much all of us, if we took the approach of never having a differing opinion, this would be an extremely dull forum.


I accept Wilder knows more than me about football and about what’s going on behind the scenes. Doesn’t mean I wasn’t disappointed to see Done playing at LWB on Saturday.

To be fair, Kitson was a decent target man but his legs ran out as the season went on. Porter was a less able target man but did the best he could with his limited ability. But playing two slow target men together was just turgid.

As was I. Unlike some though I don't feel the need to bang on about it, or claim, with no proof whatsoever, that an alternative team selection "would have won".

The difference is that Wilder lives or dies by his selections, on here anyway. Differing opinions on here bear no responsibility whatsoever so claiming that their selection would have got all three points isn't worth that much outside an interesting forum talking point. Like whether it's a breadcake or a cob.

I remember watching Kitson when he joined us and saying to my mate 'he'll be decent once he gets match sharp'.

The first part of the quote from Sean was a quote from me. I trust Wilder's judgement because he's shown that his judgement is generally spot on. I didn't trust Adkins' judgement for the opposite reason. I understand your disappointment to see Done playing LWB last week but i'm sure Wilder thought he was the best option and i'm willing to accept that

Not just on here but in real life. Imagine doing your job knowing that every decision you made could result in 20,000 people booing you and calling you a useless twat. And not just you, but your staff. Outside of the armed forces and the emergency serviced there can't be too many jobs where getting it wrong can have such an outcome. Banking and government I suppose.
It's easy to say 'I'd do this or that' when there's no way of proving what you would do would have worked.

I know it's a message board and the point is to discuss the Blades but at times when someone writes 'if it were me I'd...' (and I realise I'm as guilty of it as anyone else) I can't help but think 'it isn't you though, why should I give a shit what a welder from Darnall who's never managed a football team in his life would do?'

I agree. I just think there's a fine line between acknowledging that ultimately, more often than not, the manager will know more than you about football and shutting down any opinion that differs from the manager's choice. Of course none of us can know for sure what would happen with the alternative selection as we don't get to see it played out so it's just our own perception of what we think would be the likely outcome. I'm not accusing you of trying to shut down any dissenting opinion, merely pointing out that a sweeping approach of "the manager knows best" can be interpreted that way.

I remember saying that about Porter after seeing him in a pre-season friendly against Blackpool! I think I might have even likened him to Rob Hulse!

I'm sure he did think that hence the decision to play him. I just happen to disagree. I don't dispute he knows more than me and I can't fault the bloke overall because he gets a lot more right than wrong. I think we'd have fared better with JOC out there and Bash into the back 3 but we'll never know. I think it's fair enough to voice these sort of opinions without it turning into an attack on the manager because as I say, overall he's doing an excellent job.

I think I actually said he looked like Hulse after his lengthy injury lay off (Porter had also had a lengthy injury lay off I believe). This (Coupled with a very good season for Oldham in a past life) made me believe that if he could get his match fitness and sharpness up to scratch, that he could be a very good signing. Little did I know that it wouldn't get any better.

I think most of us, after 45 minutes thought Michael Higdon was an excellent signing.

I also thought James Harper was going to be the missing piece in our jigsaw under Blackwell and thought we were wasting our time signing McCall and Allison and was very underwhelmed by the signing of Jake Wright.

I'm sure I've got some right over the years though.

I noticed a few suggesting JOC at LWB but personally I think Done would've been the better option. I just can't see how a centre-back would've been a good choice for a position that requires a lot of energy. I think it would've been a negative move because JOC would've been a lot more defensive than Done. If Done wasn't to play I would've changed the formation back to 4-4-2.
