Jordan (The taming of the) Slew?

If it's a completely new man, how is he going to assess the players now? Do the likes of Harriott and Kennedy have any chance of impressing him in training sessions, or are the players on holiday now? Will he just listen to Morgan's advice?

he will know how the first team players have done, players not really involved will no doubt be decided with advice from morgsworth and co. not really important though is it? those players are on next to no wages and have next to chance of getting in to the team. keep em, release em, meh.

Think he's mentioned players like Forte, Horwood and Kevan Hurst.

Liban Abdi is playing in the Portuguese top division. Nicky Law has done well too. Chris Robertson is at Preston and there's a few more scattered around who may have been ok as inexpensive squad players at least.

But it's fantasy. At the time we developed those players we had a better team, and to give them significant first team experience wasn't a reasonable proposition. They were unlikely to have become the players they are now had they not been allowed to drop down to gain experience.

I'm all for blooding the kids and providing opportunity. We haven't done it enough over the years. But if a player's level is below our standard, and they're no longer deemed to be showing a sufficiently rapid improvement, then we let them go. We can't keep everyone on the payroll. Every club lets players go who subsequently prove themselves elsewhere. Out rejects aren't commonly Championship standard are they?

In three years time we could be playing in the Conference asking why we didn't keep Chris Salt because he's a stalwart in Div2.

Agreed. At the time we released the likes of Forte, Horwood, Hurst etc we were either in the PL or realistically aspiring to get to the PL. None of those players have shown at any point in their careers that they were up to that standard (with the possible exception of Forte). Hence it was the right decision at the time to let them go.

What's the alternative argument, that we should have hung onto them because we might end up in the 3rd Division? On that logic, as you suggest,we should hang on now to players not up to the 3rd Division on the off chance that we end up in the 4th Division or lower.
