1988-89 SEASON:
1 Wolverhampton Wanderers 43 26 11 6 90 43 47 89
2 Sheffield United 44 25 8 11 91 50 41 83
3 Port Vale 44 22 12 10 75 47 28 78
4 Fulham 45 22 9 14 68 65 3 75
5 Bristol Rovers 44 19 16 9 67 50 17 73
6 Preston North End 45 19 14 12 76 57 19 71
Game 45: We play Wolves, away on a Tuesday night. If we win, we could three points behind them with one game left (though they have two to play). If we draw, we're almost certainly up, even if Port Vale win (which they do). If we lose, we'd only be two points ahead of Port Vale after their win, with a tricky away match at Bristol City to come. In the event, we get a cracking 2-2 draw in front of nearly 25,000 - a huge crowd for that era.
Game 46: Bristol City away. We're three points ahead of Port Vale, with a much superior goal difference - sound familiar? Barring a miracle, we are up. Dave Basset picks a substitute keeper on the bench, just to safeguard against such an eventuality. We end up losing 2-0, with a lot of crowd trouble (I think the players had to leave the pitch at one point). Port Vale won their game, but only by one goal, so we are up! Even though we lost, it was a party atmosphere.
1989-90 SEASON:
1 Leeds United 45 23 13 9 78 52 26 82
2 Sheffield United 44 23 12 9 73 56 17 81
3 Newcastle United 45 22 14 9 79 51 28 80
4 Swindon Town 45 20 13 12 78 58 20 73
5 Blackburn Rovers 44 19 15 10 73 58 15 72
6 Sunderland 44 19 14 11 66 60 6 71
Game 45: Very tight at the top, but we have a game in hand! We need one win from the last two games - sound familiar? The first is Blackburn away. The players are knackered, and give everything, but can't force a goal. With the last touch of the game, Big Billy Tightshirt cranes his neck to reach a looping cross at the far post, right in front of the packed Blades away end... but just can't get enough on it. It skims wide, the whistle goes, but at least we know we've got another chance.
Game 46: Leicester away. Two points above Newcastle, but their goal difference is better. Filbert Street is rammed with fluorescent yellow United away tops. You might already know the outcome of this one...
I wonder whether Chris Wilder was listening into the tactical genius discussion at halftime (04:15 in)?
