Here's a description of the winner, scored by our greatest ever player, on 8 April 1898:
"Needham worked his way out to the left, dribbled right through the Bolton defence and advanced on Sutcliffe. Expecting a fierce shot, Sutcliffe dived for the ball, only for Needham to stroke it past the committed keeper, whose momentum took him into a collision with the United man"
United won 1-0 in front of 19,395 at Burnden Park. Sunderland lost to Bury and United were league champions for the first, and thus far only, time.
Our record at Bolton is not very good.
