...was it that glorious season we eventually finished runners up to dirty Leeds and the pigs got relegated?

Reason I ask is I'm sure on Goal Rush they said it's the first time since the seventies and I know we finished Champions of the fourth since then anyway.

Is there another occasion we've topped the league since then, apart from a first day victory that is?

Weren't we top of the league on several occasions in Wilson's second season before completely blowing it?

Wasn't that long back although it does seem like forever.

I know this breaks your rule regards first games, but David Wier had us top of league 1.

Don't think we ever got ahead of Charlton in 2011/2012.
Didn't Danny have us top during Autumn 2012?

We were top of the Prem after drawing with Liverpool.

We were also top of the Championship after beating Leicester on Sky in the opening game of a season.

Yep I thought we topped the league then as well. Just wondered how they came up with that stat when it's clearly wrong, I've also seen on another forum a blade saying it's the first time since we won the fourth. Again wrong because I'm almost sure we topped the league in that promotion season until about Christmas when Leeds overtook us.

David Wier.....erghh, you dirty bastard........David Wier!!!!!!!
Why did you have to mention him on new years day!!!
First Adkins is mentioned and abit of sick came up n now, David fuckin Wier! I think abit of poo just came up!!! very earthy nutty, yet meaty with a dash of orange juice to take the hardness away! 1/1/17 and I'm going to be having nightmares!:p

We were never top of the league that season.

Not checked but from memory I think Charlton got off to an amazing start winning something like 15 out of their first 20 matches. They had a big lead over everyone.

That was Wilson's first season wasn't it?

I think we were top during the Christmas period 2012 but then the football gods realised we might actually go on to achieve something.

So in typical United fashion:

Miller got that season-ending, career-buggering injury when we smashed Scunthorpe at The Lane and we sold Blackman in January. We then failed to sign replacements for our only real goalscorers (no, Forte doesn't count) resulting in a decent chance of promotion from a division which that season was possibly the worst since the creation of planet earth being casually thrown away like a £50 note into the wind. This was the division which Doncaster bleeding Rovers won by being the least shit out of 24 utterly wank teams and managing to scrape 84 points together; an insult to our efforts the previous season, which saw us bend League One over and give it a jolly good rogering by collecting 90 points and scoring 90 goals only to finish third and lose the playoff final. To rub the salt into the wound we then went into the playoffs dreading yet another losing trip to Wembley only to be humiliatingly denied even that by Yeovil Town on national television.

Unbelievable Jeff.

United are - and always will be - masters of fuckuppery.

I remember us being top after winning at Crawley on the verge of Christmas when Tony McMahon scored twice

Yup, two free kicks if I remember. We then beat scunny 3 nowt on Boxing Day to stay top. Unfortunately Shaun Miller who was really looking the part got his awful injury in that game having scored and we went downhill from there.

What they actually said on Goal Rush, FF, was that 'it is the first time since the 70's that United have been top of a division at the turn of a new year'.

I hesitate to mention the occasion that they were referring to.

It was the New Year's Eve in 1979. Despite losing at the Sty, we were still top of the league after drawing at home to Grimsby on the 29th December. We also beat Blackburn at the Lane on New Year's Day to cement top spot, but then fell apart completely and finished nowhere.

Amazing looking back on the line-ups from that game. We had Darryl Westlake, Callum McFadzean and Marcus Williams on the bench. Crawley had Billy Clarke, Nicky Ajose and John Akinde on theirs.

We were top around Xmas time a few years ago, it came up on my Timehop the other day.

I remember a time (sob sob) when we were top and unbeaten of the whole kit and kerboodle. Perhaps it was a dream ?
