The number of Blades (and the volume of support) was impressive (circa 1600??) but I wonder if 2700 represents the lowest ever attendance for a competitive game involving the Blades.

Any ideas?

Well the figure to beat is exactly 2725 as announced last night...

No. Our record lowest home attendance for a competitive game is 500 v Darwen in our first league season 1892-93. And we have certainly had lower than 2700 attendances in away games in minor cups (and in one or two league cup games) in recent years.

There were only about 1,500 at Wrexham in one of the games United played in this competition back in 1989.

The lowest crowd in recent years must be for the game at Wimbledon in 2002-3. What was that? 1300? That was about a thousand Blades and the relatives of the Wimbledon players...

Petey can't come to the computer right now, but he informs me that there were 1603 Pigs at Bratfud last night........damn.

Ah yes, I was at that game - it was on 7/4/03 and was a very weird atmosphere - almost like a reserve game. Despite in being April it was bloody freezing and, United having by then giving up on automatic promotion, the play offs being more or less assured and our FA cup semi coming up on the following Sunday, Warnock rested half the first team.

Wimbledon won 1-0 when Neil Shipperly tapped in after Kenny had parried a shot and the game was notable for ending Ben Doane's career as he broke his leg in a 50-50 challenge.

The game was rearranged for that day because (a) United played Palace at the same venue on the Saturday and (b) they had to play that week so Brown wasn't suspended for the semi.

They were a little unlucky to only get a point against Palace but were very poor against Wimbledon. That was the first time (but not the last) I saw Windass mail in a really poor performance. I awlays wonder whether we gave up on automatic promotion too early - 5 points more would have made a hell of a difference later on.

Like Manchester Free Trade Hall and Port Vale, I was there too taking advantage of a cheap flight into London and getting 2 Blades games in. I wish I hadn't made it to the Wimbledon game though. Bloody freezing.

On the subject of low attendances our lowest post war home league attendance was on 17/3/87 - 6647 - when we beat Palace 1-0 with a Morris pen. Beagrie having missed a pen earlier on.

I was at that one as well, which does loads for my Big Blade credibility.

HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA!

I live in Bradford, and I went to the game last night. the attendance was 3 thousand and something (didnt get it exactly) and i can confirm to you, whole-heartedly that there were ABSOLUTELY NO MORE than 500 pig fans there last night, and i seriously doubt it was that many.

I think with all the crap they've endured over the last decade 500 fans is enough to facilitate a throbbing erection

I was at that one as well, from what i can remember it was a Tuesday night match, because it was touch and go if i was allowed to go because it was a school night.

I was part of 250,000 at the Port Vale match as well.

It was indeed a Tuesday night. Also Steve Wigley's last game before we sold him to Birmingham in exchange for Martin Kuhl.

I was at the Wrexham game in 89 amongst about 15 Blades, it had initially been called off and so we made 2 journeys!

I was also at the Palace game in 87.

I could be wrong on this one but didn't we play Wrexham twice in the Sherpa Van that season. Wasn't it a round-robin first round with us-Chester-Wrexham in one group. We then drew Wrexham again in the knockouts. Seem to remember giving ex-Liverpool defender Joey Jones aload of stick and didn't Bob Booker get sent-off and also Graham Benstead got his marching orders after the final whistle?
