Last Night

The first half was a disgraceful effort from the whole team. Colchester were pressing us high up and we couldn't cope with their pace and desire. What was really evident though was there was not one player standing up and puffing his chest out, McEveley ought to have been doing that but he was just as poor as the rest of them in the first half. At half time we could very easily have been 4-0 down which is disgraceful at home.

However, as you rightly point out the second half was much improved and the fight back was very much on and led by McEveley. I don't think it was a penalty for the foul on him but we got a stroke of luck with it.

Then we had Sharp missing good chances, McNulty missing a good chance which he made for himself, and lots of good build up play into their box but just weren't incisive enough finishing. At 2-2, much like at 1-1 against Bury, we were forcing the issue and looking to go on to win the game. If we'd scored one of the chances and gone 3-2 up I'm confident we'd have seen it out by hitting them on the break and looking to score more.

Had we won last night we would still be right to be very concerned by the performance because the defending was simply atrocious, but it's a game which we could have won on another night with the second half performance. Equally, we could have lost it by half time on another night because we were that bad in the first half.

There is a lot of work to be done, the squad needs freshening up with some younger players IMO, but it isn't the end of the world and I'm glad we are having these problems at the beginning of the season when we can still rectify them, rather than at the end of the season which was the case last season.

Good post Smirth, points lost at the start of the season are just the same as points lost at the end of season though.

>>I though the first half was very very poor, although I will say that I think people are going over the top when saying 'the worst I have ever seen'
i've been thinking about this all night and i stand by this comment.. i remember some of the Heath games being gash but i've erased them from my memory. lets settle on 'heathesque'.. that is bad enough.. #
jcr best player?? you need to send me some of your medication ;)

Game is all about opinions, I thought we only looked dangerous when he had the ball.

I hope so because we're going to have to average about 3 goals a game to win if we keep defending like this.

Conceding 10 to Gillingham, Bury and Colchester is shocking for a side chasing promotion.

Absolultey. And it's no overreaction from the fans given the rubbish we watched first half. In the Kop it was a mix of anger and disbelief at how a side that beat Swindle, Posh, Chesterfield and Blackpool could morph into that shower.

Why does everyone keep saying Billy missed 2 pens? He missed 1.

There's a reason it got retaken - because it was unfairly "saved" by the keeper.
there you go . that's a bit of positivity. bravo :D
