Lack pace

Yes, we missed two big chances in the first half, but throughout we lacked pace to hurt them. Attacking down the centre, from out-wide and upfront, we lack injection of pace. Our style is nice to watch, but it lacks players(s) with pace to make it cutting edge. Lacked pace for a few years now.

UTB
Agreed we’ve lacked pace for a few years now, but we’re also 3rd in the Championship and playing great football despite lacking pace and we have experienced the best 21/2 seasons that many fans can remember despite lacking pace, so maybe pace isn’t the be all and end all the way we set up?

And after saying all that, I also agree that having a couple of genuinely paces players in the squad would be good, but I feel they would be more about holding onto a lead rather than getting back into a game like tonight. Teams will sit deep when they’re in front and even Usain Bolt wouldn’t be of any use in breaking them down. We need tricky players who can take the opposition on under those circumstances.

That's possibly the best contribution I have read on this debate. It's alright folk screaming for pace but as you say our system, and also how teams set up against us (particularly at the Lane) doesn't necessarily mean any such player would be that effective.
As for who they replace in the squad, then yes they would be warming the bench at most, initially anyway. Madine coming in has seemingly seen off Washington from the match day squad. I expect Clarke would be the next to fall should another attacker come in, even though Wilder likes his all round game.

It raises the question "Do we stick with the 3-5-2 system too rigidly?". Should we not be able to switch to a 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 when the pace injection is required?

A good example was when Dowell tried to play Clarke in behind and it was like watching a donkey chase after a carrot.
Was right in front of us. There was just too much weight on the pass so for me Leon was blameless. However I’d agree that he was slower than a knackered McGoldrick when he came on.
We do lack pace and it’s so frustrating when we check back when there’s space to run into but for me we are at our best when we play with tempo.
Sadly it was non existent today

I think we do mix our formation up in games but maybe not quickly enough sometimes. I do also see why Wilder largely sticks with what has worked so well for us.
I suppose if we did sign a gamechanging attacking wide player (for example) then it would perhaps justify a change of system by default to accommodate them. Problem is I think they are the type of player that we can't quite afford so it's go with what you do best for the time being and tweak as best you can.

Just thought I'd bump this to remind all the staff at SUFC (reading the forum as per an ITKer inside knowledge)...

We shouldn't forget pace, within our transfer business. Please.

All over the park. Especially up front.
We were after Rak Sayki and Tyrese Cambpell both pace. We cannot afford pace.

Campbell scored 4 goals last season, his early promise has dwindled and he's also had injury problems. No thanks. Also no point having pace if you lack ability and a football brain, ask Oli Burke. Anyone can afford a fast player, loads in the lower leagues, they're just not that good at football.

Completely agree having just watched Spain win the Euros by ripping every team a new one with blistering pace . . . .

If Osula is going as well, we're looking at a squad with very little pace. Will we try to address that, or will Wilder aim for a style that doesn't need pace at all?

Seriki, Buyabu and One have pace, but are unlikely to play.

Seriki, buyabu, One, are not ready for championship football!
