Best CB I ever played with was 5ft 9in tall. Like a fckin rottweiller. Don't need to be a big lummox if you have ability, a football brain and the right attitude.
Why on earth have we not sorted his contract out yet.
As I understand it, he could walk away in the summer, because we haven’t renewed his contract yet.
Another example of the abysmal way this club is run, by the current owners and it’s hapless Chief Exec.

Quick, good on the ball and calm and composed. Could be some player once he's filled out a bit

He cannot walk away until he is 24 if we want to keep him

We have an additional year option on him.

The Battle of Bramall Lane match was good for us in that it opened up things nicely for Jags, Tonge and Monty
Can you explain more what you mean here? The three players you mention had accumulated over 100 first team games by the West Brom game. All 3 were regulars in the first team at that point. Montgomery didn't play in that game and Tonge had been substituted when it kicked off.

Not having a dig, I just don't see the connection?

Tbh, I don't recall any of them being a regular at that point though as you point out they probably had started playing on a fairly regular basis. I believe that all 3 were early 20s (Tongue might even have still been a teenager at the time).

After that game, Santos and Suffo didn't play for Utd again and it seemed to me that Warnock seemed to be more inclined to go with the younger players rather than the old guard. I don't have details of the team selected for the remainder of the games in that season afterwards but that was the impression I had. Warnock seemed to want to freshen it up afterwards and go with the younger lads.

No idea whether any of them played that day, other than Santos as sub and Suffo obviously.

He's only 19 and will get stronger. He is much taller than Puyol, Cannavaro, Baresi and Koeman.
Mate 😆

He’s no Puyol, Cannavaro, Baresi, Koeman ffs 🤦‍♂️

His stature now I reckon is him for the foreseeable, he is not a centre half it’s as simple as that. I’m not digging the lad out as he’s a very good prospect but it will be in a different position if he wants to play in the top two divisions. You can bump this thread in the future when he is an established 1st team player (at any club) because he won’t be a centre half.

Now we are out of the cups would a loan move be a good option till end of the season if viable. League 1/2 club could help him progress if guaranteed regular minutes.

They all broke through the season before in 2000/01 - Monty (27 apps), Jags (18) & Tonge (2)

The 2001/02 season (WBA game) saw them gain the following league games

Jagielka - 23 (14 starts)
Tonge - 30 (27 starts)
Monty - 31 (14 starts)

He's only 19 and still growing. At the moment he is about half an inch shorter than Egan. Do you think it is impossible for a 19 year old athlete who trains full-time to become stronger?

Young Sharp up front makes 8 Academy players in the squad. When did that last happen? Silent Blade ?
This is a tough question to answer and it would take me a long time to look at all seasons since the Spurs match in May 1967 (the team was Hodgkinson, Badger, B.Shaw, Munks, Matthewson, B.Wagstaff, Woodward, Mallender, Jones, Barlow, Birchenall which makes 10 as Hodgy was signed from Worksop Town).

Maybe Burnley (a) in May 1968 with the team being Widdowson, Badger, B.Shaw, Munks, Mallender, Barlow, Woodward, B.Wagstaff, Hill, Currie, Reece. The last two being the only ones that didnt play for our youth team but both scored in our 2-0 win. Well done to anyone who can find 8 in a match since Burnley (a) in May 1968

Of course he can be stronger. He will never be a centre half though. That’s the last I’m saying on it as it seems I’m digging him out which is not what I’m doing.

This would be a good idea for an article for one of the local journos to be fair.

Having so many young lads in the squad says a lot to support Hecky's appointment if they so decided to pick it up as an article theme.

He's been a centre back in the U23s since he was 16 years old.
And?

Kyle Walker was a centre forward at the academy from 8 to 16. He was not going to make it, he switched to right back and the rest is history.

Just bump the thread in a year, thanks.

Hartlepool away in the League Cup August 9th 2011. 8 in the squad but not all made it on the pitch.

Harry Maguire
Matt Lowton
Nick Montgomery
Stephen Quinn
Jordan Slew
Matty Harriott (came from Luton? But was in our academy a few years)
George Long
Danny Philliskirk

Erik Tonne and Seamus Conneely were also in that squad, who although not academy graduates in the true sense also spent time in our u21s as they were at the time with Conneely having a decent career in England.

This stuck in my mind as I had a terrible hospital diagnosis earlier that day but still insisted to my Dad we went to the match, I started chemotherapy a week later and still think sitting through this match (we won on pens) was as much of a trial as the first therapy session!

More than a decade on, that's some post in so many ways.

So he didn't play in that position in the U18s, U23s or the first team?
Kyron Gordon has been outstanding at centre back in the U23s. To keep posting "He will never be a centre half" is ridiculous.

To back up your point, Gordon isn't even the shortest United player to start at centre half in the last couple of seasons. Phil Jagielka isn't even 6' yet has 40 England caps. To me, Gordon has the potential to be Basham's long term successor.

Kacper Lopata: 1.92m (6' 3½")
Jack O'Connell: 1.91m (6' 3")
Chris Basham: 1.90m (6' 3")
John Egan: 1.85m (6'1")
Ben Davies: 1.85m (6' 1")
Kyron Gordon: 1.84m (6' ½")
Enda Stevens: 1.83m (6')
Phil Jagielka: 1.80m (5' 11")
Jack Robinson: 1.80m (5' 11")
George Baldock: 1.78m (5' 10")

How many made it on the pitch? Philliskirk was nearly 20 when he joined us. Did he play an Academy match for us?

Maguire, Lowton, Montgomery and Quinn started; Slew came on while Long, Harriott and Tønne were unused subs. Not sure you can count Philliskirk or Conneely, we signed them (as well as David McAllister, who came on in that Hartlepool game) as 20 or 21 year olds.

A slightly more diplomatic way of putting it might have been: he currently lacks the physical stature to suggest that he will be a powerful centre back who could dominate in the air.
PS At 19 all is not lost fo him. I certainly filled out after leaving uni and starting work (18-21 ish still growing) and being able to afford proper food and eating/drinking (pints pies/curries and sandwiches) round Wakey certainly helped in that regard so perhaps young Kyron and our new consultant head of coaching the coaches to help coaching youngsters could look into that.

A diet of balti pie and peas with pints of bitter in order for the nutritionist

6 (Harriott and Long unused subs).

Don’t know re. Philliskirk, didn’t realise he joined us that late. Would imagine he must have played for the u21s as he only made 2 other appearances for the first team in his 2/3 years with us.

Edit- just seen Balham as already answered.

Bump.

Can you name a 19 year old "centre half" in English football that is doing better than Kyron at the moment?

Don’t have time to watch them. But if they are stronger and can pass without conceding possession I imagine there’s a few. But he’s improved from the Coventry car crash, thank goodness.
