Kevin the Barnsley bore

Kevin was my Dad. He died last Saturday.

I’m not posting this as an attack on any posters on here. I told him about these threads (not in too much detail!), and he loved it!

The Ched thing was more or less his real opinion, at least initially. After a while, Radio Sheff would sometimes call him asking for contributions, which maybe rewarded, reinforced and amplified his more extreme opinions. I dunno. He was proper stubborn, too! The Madine stuff I don’t think he truly cared about, it was just a good opportunity to be on the radio again. He spent his mornings and early afternoons in the pubs of Barnsley, and then would go home and stick Radio Sheffield on. It was a big part of his life over the last few years, so I think being involved with it really tickled him.

He loved winding people up, though, too. I’m so glad he never discovered Facebook or Twitter!

He was previously a pretty eloquent fella, but he’d had a stroke a few years back, which slowed his speech down considerably.

He had his good sides and his bad sides, but he was a proper character, and he lived his whole life the way he wanted to.

He was also a big blade, especially back in the day. He used to follow United around, particularly during the late 70s early 80s, where he’d drive off anywhere for pre-season games, much to me Mum’s displeasure, who was raising a baby me in Kent.

I just got my son his first Blades shirt, and I’m gutted his grandad will never get to see him in it.

Be nice to people, even the annoying ones on the radio, and if your parents are around, tell em you love em.

I used to listen to Scotty McClure too, around 1994 ish, think it was on every week night from 10am and there were no rules, anyone could ring up and talk about anything. Some used to ring up trying to take the pi$$ but Scotty was ahead of the game and used to end up taking the pi$$ out of callers.

Lived in Birdwell, and also previously lived in Royston. He’s a Sheffielder; lived all over Sheff, and had an encyclopedic knowledge of its pubs, but over the last ten years or so, he became really quite fond of Barnsley and it’s people.

He was your dad thats all that matters,it is a shame that your son wont see his grandad,you could always ask Radio Sheffield if they could put together some of Kevin's contributions on a memory stick,so your son would be able to at least hear his voice,i have to admit your dad did get me frothing sometimes when he was on RS.

Was the speech manerism you know the (Mmmm) thing due to the stroke.

He was your dad thats all that matters,it is a shame that your son wont see his grandad,you could always ask Radio Sheffield if they could put together some of Kevin's contributions on a memory stick,so your son would be able to at least hear his voice,i have to admit your dad did get me frothing sometimes when he was on RS.

Yes he came across as pompous and holier than thou....used to wind me up too...sometimes I even wondered whether it was a deliberate wind up
but he was different, respectful and not frightened to speak his mind....good value to listen to views with a different slant.

He never gave much detail regards current matches so I always assumed he never went to our matches.
Thats a bug bear of mine when callers to Radio Sheffield give their idealistic opinions but haven’t been to a match for 30 years.

Another bug bear is people who slag off callers to RS Football Heaven....when it takes guts ring up...they all earn my respect....even Pitsmoor Pig.

Really sorry about your dad HGIJ. He sounds like he was a character and a good bloke. You have a lot of nice stuff to remember and tell your little lad about. I too am a fully paid up "Deedar" in exile in Barnsley and I can honestly say that I love it. Yes there's crappy bits, but there are everywhere, and on the whole people are luvly and there's some reyt characters! That's probably why your dad liked it (and the beer's cheaper!). Look after yourself, it does get better.
