Kevin McDonald/Sander Berg

I think the thing with Berge is that the release clause on him is huge. If there were no clause and we were talking about just getting back what we paid for him or in that ballaprk, then I'd be up for keeping him. £35m for him on the other hand is a lot of pennies, especially when people talk about the need for relegated clubs to make up around £40m in reduced revenue. It would even be a tougher decision if Berge had been a star and was a big part of the team. Really we haven't seen that much of him, and what we have seen has been mixed, so I think what Jokanovic could do with £35m in the bank is probably greater than what we have in Berge. If we end up keeping him then great, if he's worth even half the asking price he's too good for the Championship. I think that along with the expectation that he will leave is making a lot of people indifferent to it. Which is nice. Usually when a player is rumoured to be about to be sold it's a disaster for us.
Good post. I get the feeling that I think your last few sentences are where most people stand regards Berge to be honest which as you say is not a bad place to be.

I know with the Prince in charge he will let the manager spend most of not all of the funds he brings in for Berge on rebuilding the squad if he were to be sold, he’s done it since he’s been here.

Ultimately though, I would personally like to keep Berge, whilst he hasn’t shown much, he’s shown enough to me to suggest he will turn into a very good player now he’s had a season in the hustle, bustle and speed of the Premier league.

I don't think it's a case of wanting to get rid of him, it's more realism he's our most saleable asset and it took enough persuasion to get him to play in PL. I just do not see him playing in the Championship he'll go where to? that I'm not sure.
I can’t really disagree with that bb, it would be great to see him play for us in the Championship though, I think it would be like a walk in the park for him.

Wages might be an issue, he may not have a reduction clause like the rest.

Sell Berge and get the funds to buy an entire new top drawer Championship midfield with backups.
Keep Berge and hope he transforms our declining midfield.
I hate to say it as I would have loved to see him stay (and I don't think he simply has to leave like many believe) but if he is sold on to get some £££ in I can't blame them.

There certainly wouldn’t be much running. There never is from him.
He’s a player who likes to make the ball do the work, unfortunately not many are on the same wavelength as him.

He would suit an SJ side more than a Wilder one. I’m still not sure why Wilder bought him and also played him where he did?

I understand there is a sell on clause with Genk, 20% has been mentioned which is sizable and will make quite a dent in what's left, I would love to see him playing for us under Jocanovic next season

Why are people so eager to see the back of Berge? The lad can play and has recently been used in a very negative system which can only be described as dull as fuck, I reckon Berge in an attacking outfit, one which SJ prefers by the way will prosper very much so, as will our team.

A players monetary value and what we can sell him for is always the first thought.
Rather than the unimportant what he can do on the pitch

Not really, we've just been relegated to the championship, therefore to add quality we also need to generate funds. Berge is a good player but wouldn't be missed if we signed a new midfield..

And if Berge was with us in League One and it was quite obvious he was going to be a top player, our fans would have him out the door for a million so we could get seven "bodies" in

Selling DCL, Adams and Ramsdale basically played a big part in our league 1 promotion. At the time they wasn't missed, it's just now they have become top players.

Where is the confirmation of this sell on clause? We paid 20+ million for someone with 18 months left on his contract at Genk.

50% of what we get for him is probably the biggest transfer budget in the league basically. Not one other player would even command an 8 figure fee anymore despite what we paid for them. If we keep him we probably need a fire sale of our other top end players to swap out 5 or 6 of the others for what Slav wants to do.... Move Berg on and we can hold on to who we want.
Egan, O’Connell and Ramsdale are all right figure players.

Once McBurnie and Brewster have scored a few, they will be too.

Take your point about Berge but we have loads of valuable assets.

How remiss of the fans to be thinking about the club being able to operate within sensible financial constraints instead of just throwing more money at the problem?!

It wasn't sensible financial practice to let our players go for peanuts

Sensible financial constraints also means operating at the level you are at. Something United have never done.

It doesn't matter whether it's Premier League or League One the backward retarded Sheffield fuckwits that have run the club have done a wonderful job brainwashing the backward retarded Sheffield fuckwits that support the club that we can't compete.

And our fans do think that way.
As soon as a player arrives on the scene who's second touch isn't a tackle, the "how much can we get for him" thoughts start to escalate.

Hopefully the new board of directors and manager can break this "club retard" trend and run the club properly.

Apart from you of course who it appears seems to be the only 'fan' to see through this ploy and want the club to be run 'properly'?

As a fan I'd love us to keep Berge but financially if we are offered a decent amount of money for him (I can't quantify this but my opinion is that in excess of £20m is a good deal for someone who has hardly set the world alight in a relegated team and will be worth around £15m in the accounts) and it allows us to bring in good players then it might be a good thing to do.

I apologise if I am just being a 'backward retarded Sheffield fuckwit' but to me it makes no sense carrying the cost of a player we can't afford if we can cash him in satisfactorily.

I would be delighted to see Berge take on the midfield general role for us next season, however, realistically this would involve the player taking a risk and betting on us going straight back up. He may not be prepared to do that, in which case I'm certain there will be several top-flight Clubs, home and abroad, who would like him.

I've dreamed ( for what seems like my whole life) that United would have the ba**s to hold out for our valuation of a player when other Clubs come knocking at the door for one of our players. I have seen dozens of our players picked up at cut-prices over the years by SUFC Boards who were too stupid / greedy / gut-less to demand the price that was appropriate for the player.

This appears to be a situation where our Board have stated, we don't need to sell and if you want him, the discussions begin at £35m+ as we won't be prepared to accept less. I live in hope that they have the ba**s to stick to that stand-point because if we sell for £35 - £40 m then this will mean we can build an effective midfield to play fast, attacking, exciting football again.

The new manager appointment appears to be positive in that respect and I can't imaging that he will have taken the job unless certain guarantees of a realistic transfer budget were made.

My fingers are crossed, however, having been a Blades fan for 56 years, I shall not be holding my breath. I will believe it when I see it ....... 😏

Almost every club has to trade. It’s part of the business of running a football club. If you don’t, you end up like the pigs. Our problem was that between Warnock and Wilder we wasted a huge amount of what we generated from sales, through a combination of McCabe’s gambling addict boom and bust mentality and his inability to identify the right managers at the right time.
