Glad to see him get a call up - been a good solid pro for many years. Not everyones cup of tea but wouldn't say no to him heading our front line just now!

Good article about his career in this link which mentions his years at Brunsmeer afc - I played in the same team for about half a season before he started his road to bigger and better things, even then we all knew he was going to do well in the game with a bit of luck etc. Was a quite and dedicated player even back then.

Dave Barker - manager of brunsmeer and butcher in I think castle market - he was a character (a bit like that fella from Kez...Brian...?)

Anyone on here play for brunsmeer around the same time?

Anyway - I think he was a Blade (Kevin) was he ever on our books?

He was released as a YTS trainee by us... Went to Chesterfield i think.... And the rest is history.

Definitely a Blade, followed us to Wembley against the porkers. Not on our books, to my knowledge.

UTB

His dad, Cyril, was deaf (died in 2005) and played football for Sheffield Deaf in late 1950's throughout the 1960's and in the early 1970's and also played for many strong local league clubs. He represented for Great Britain deaf that reached the final (lost to Yugoslavia) of the 1965 deaflympics at Washington DC. Derek Dooley mentioned Cyril as a talented player in his autobiography as he played for Birley Amateurs (Derek managed the team) and thinks if it wasnt for his deafness, he would have played for a First division club.

Cyril supported wendy but Kevin is a Blade and was on schoolboy terms for us around 1993

He was Quality,I was at Chesterfield with him, He went on to sign for Southampton for 750,000 and our chairman at the time (Norton Lee) Was so quick to sell him and get the money in,he didnt even put in a sell on clause... the next season he signed for Blackburn for 7.5mil..... Big mistake there by Mr Chairman.. He was so tight we had to play reserve games in the aftenoon so we didnt use the floodlights!!!!

From what I remember his mum lived on Woodseats (Fraser I think) and when he started making loads he bought her a big house up Lodge Moor but she didn't like it and went back on the Fraser.

Am i right in thinking warnock tried to sign him when he was released by southampton and allardyce got him at bolton instead? i seem to remember loads of talk about only offering him 1k a week due him being overweight and not scoring for donkeys years.

anyway, fair play to the lad hope he does well, be the first blade to play for england in a long time!

saw him a few years back in napoleons and was surprised to see him betting for a few quid a time at the most. sensible lad in hindsight! always been solid for the last few years and deserving of a cap even if it has come too late for him to be involved in a major tournament. strange decision by capello really.

He was turned away by Bassett and swore he'd never play for the Blades again. Shame as he's a great centre forward.

i know a lad who was best mates with him when he lived on fieldhead road just behind the lane
the lad was absoloutley gutted when basset released him and swore he would never play for the blades again

Certainly one that got away. We released him as a youngster, but if we'd kept him, we'd probably have sold him as soon as he started to show his potential.

Brian Deane was rejected by Leeds United as a youngster, but was signed by Donny.

The rest is history.

Win some, lose some.
