Today he kept saying when he played he would have done this or done that, do you think football has changed since his day as a player.

I'm sick of Keith Edwards this season. I have to tune into all games via BladesPlayer and listen to his boring, negative opinions.

In the days of Warnock / Blackwell he moaned and moaned about the direct football. Under Wilson and now Clough he moans that we aren't direct enough. And that "when he was playing" he would have done this and that. The majority of callers into P&R just regurgitate what they've heard Keith say.

He's also given us the kiss of death a few time this season. Away at MK Dons "I only see United winning this game, MK Dons don't look like scoring......oh, MK Dons have just scored".

It was very refreshing when they had David Holdsworth co-commentating.

In terms of your original question - football has changed a lot since his day, however, what he is referring to - being a goal poacher hasn't. Other than strikers nowadays have to be more well rounded.

One of Edwards main gripes is he expects forwards to get across or in front of his marker instead of the classic ball watching .

A bit of pace does help but certain theories don't change like that one.

What has changed is football science - food, fitness, drink, no smoking etc......and you can't tackle any more.
The basics of pass and move will never change.

We apparently played with tempo today at Barnsley - fitness means you can do more for longer.

Just look how teams come to Bramall Lane and close us down - never used to be like that.

so yes, footy has changed in many ways.

I understand (bc I read it on a book*) that, as has already been pointed out strikers today can't be pure goalscorers like he was.

Apparently this accounts for the career of Michael Owen: despite his phenomenal eye for goal he didn't have enough to his game to justify a starting place or in the end a place off the bench at even second rate teams.

Are there any pure goalscorers any more?

Where's today's Inzaghi?

Couldn't agree more. A really negative bugger!

In my opinion Keith Edwards talks a lot of sense and should of been used as a striker coach. The lad was not Pele but he knew where the net was.

Edwards did score that goal where he dummied the ball and keeper, spun round the other side and scored, Pele tried the same and put it wide!

Don't agree with everything Edwards says, but much of it is fair comment. He's there to give his views on the game and how the players, manager, etc performs in his opinion, not to sugar coat it, which he does honestly imo

Edwards is still a legend in my eyes.
Exciting player and prolific goal scorer.

I've had the pleasure of spending a thoroughly enjoyable 30 or so mins with him reminiscing at a match.

He knows his shit and if he says the strikers could be doing better then he knows.

If you don't like him, turn it off. It's easy.
Yeah, easy......then try to imagine the comms. It's easy!!

I'd like someone to tell me what's happening today, not what should have been happening 30+ years ago!

I have no problem with criticism. There are always at least two options though, listen or don't. I also appreciate that not every one can get to the game. It was a special blades day today though, even though it took me 90 mins to get out of a car park.

Keith a moaner ?. Lets face it we have given him plenty of ammunition in the past. Rather listen to him any day than having some totally biased wanker like Pearson for the pigs. No matter what, Keith is a Blade through and through and loves the club.

Against Bristol Rovers? Came up in a recent thread. Also saluted the Kop before putting the ball in the net. And if memory serves Keith took out the keeper and a defender, Pele only took out the keeper, and, like you said, didn't even score.

Is there any video of Keith's goal?

Pearson is awful. His girly shrieks whenever there's a chance, or God forbid a goal are vomit inducing.

Fair enough, your right he does love the blades and wants the best for us.

It's just this season he's started to get tiresome, he is over critical at times and just brings you down when tuning in. But yeah, would rather him than Pearson.

Unfortunately when tuning in is your only option turning off doesn't really come into it.

As we are in Division 3 Edwards would do a job, but did he ever score a goal in the top flight?

When Keith Edwards is on I change to the opposing radio commentary - He was a great player but a really bad commentator (that simple)

Agreed mate, even if some moronic fans tries to cause a crush at the station on the way home.
Think I'll drive next time.

No, but he were a better scorer and player than Steve Bull who knocked in plenty in divisions 2 and 3 too, Bull got more plaudits from the shite, never heard of Sheffield, media and played for England and did alright, so nowt to suggest Keith wouldn`t have prospered in the top division at his best, service counted too and Colin Morris was expert at that, Keith took very few penalties too AND took corners, just think just how much Keith might have scored if Morris and Kenworthy didn`t take the pens.

I like Keith as a commentator, sure he moans but he`s got most things right this season.

Pundits, like fans have fairly fixed opinions on their preferred methods of play and on how good certain players are.

I think it would be better for Radio Sheffield to rotate three or four different pundits throughout the season to offer a more varied perspective on individual and team performances.

I like Edwards. Yes he is negative but we all are when it comes to the Blades! Much rather have him than mad Pearson who is basically just a fan who is totally biased. Edwards will say if we are bad but will also praise us if we play well like today. Derek Parker always seems well balanced whenever I hear him too
