Could someone please put to bed an urban myth for me por favor ?

I was at this game. It was pre electronic scoreboard days. The old scoreboard was still in use where a bloke updated both the score and the scorers number with numbered “tiles” countdown style !

Did the scoreboard bloke run out of number 9s that day and had to use an upside down 6 to signal Edwards 4th goal ?

Asking for a friend !

Be buggered if I’d have been able to tell the difference from the other side of the ground

We were also after Dean Saunders(Brighton) and Ray Houghton (Oxford) a year or two later so Porterfield could have had a decent team by the time we were in division 2.

Porterfield was interested in some good players in the early/mid 80s, Drinkell, Pointon, Houghton, Nicholas (Peter not Charlie), Forrest, Wilson, Bruce, it was unfortunate Brealy lost interest once the Bramall Centre got the knock back (pig fans on the council shitting themselves about United moving passed their beloved pigs put the brakes on that one). Yes we'd have had a very decent team with those players.

I think Saunders was a little later under McEwan, it was a done deal, £60k if memories serve, then due to injuries in the Swansea first team he got pitched in against Brighton, scored 2 and they changed their mind. Another forward we were close to signing at that time was Mark Bright. If we'd have got them two, with Beagrie on the left wing and Morris on the right wing that would have been some reyt forward line. If only ...

Anyone remember this
I always thought of Edward's as kind of a poor man's Kenny Dalglish.

IMO the most natural goal scorer I've seen at Bramall Lane, just ahead of Billy.
The other player that would probably have come into the 'natural goal scorer ' bracket would have been Clive Mendonca if we hadn't been so keen to get rid TWICE.

I remember us being 'after' Ray Houghton. When we didn't get him & signed Ray Lewington instead we were told "we (SUFC) believe we've got the better deal" 🤣🤣
My God we were so gullible!!!

Gillingham were managed by ex-Blade Gerry Summers. Seem to remember before the game he was reported as saying they would beat us easily. Oh how we laughed.

That was the 4-0 win in November 1979. He left Gillingham in 1981.
