First 10 yards are in the head
That's a great story and mirrors the times I've spoken to him. It got to the point where he recognised me first because my eyes are shite for distance.About 3 or so months back I was in a Dronfield garden centre with Mrs. RS when I spotted King Keith walking towards me. I was all starry eyed coming face to face with the Blades hero of my youth. There was a conversation that went something like -
Me - “Keith, how you keeping ?”
KK - “Do I know you ?” smiling but looking bemused.
Me - “No, but I certainly know you, you were the best striker I’ve seen at Bramall Lane in around 50 years”
KK - “Thanks very much, I really appreciate that. Just tell this young lady with me” It was his Granddaughter l think.
Me to his Granddaughter “This man is the finest striker I’ve ever seen play for Sheffield United “ to which she chuckled.
He was really appreciative of my total praise of him and he laughed that his granddaughter didn’t know just how good he was “You’ll believe me now” he said jokingly to her. His parting comment to me was “Thank you, you’ve really made my day”.
Me and the Mrs. carried on shopping and it was only a minute or two later when it had sunk in that I’d had the opportunity to praise a player face to face who was so much part of my late teens and early twenties, going to the Blades matches home and away and how we idolised him.
He was looking very good to be fair and he did mention the heart by pass (may have been a double) and he was getting back to good health.
Love that bloke - made my year never mind my day !
I find it a little sad that he clearly didn't make much out of the game, I know he had an expensive divorce, which wouldn't help, but I think the club could reach out, as like you say, he wasn't some fly by night, he was idolised by an entire generation of Blades fans.
Might not be THE best striker we've ever had but certainly up there in terms of finishing, supreme ice cold finisher. If he was through one on one, you could almost guarantee he'd score.
