Keith Edwards 4 goals v Gillingham

The 1st goal stuck in the memory, partly because it was a superb strike but also because it was unusual for Edwards to be taking a direct free-kick.

Since Edwards' return to the club in '81, Kenworthy had invariably been first in line for any direct free-kicks. TK was out injured at the start of the 83/84 season, though, and Edwards stepped up. It transpired, perhaps unsurprisingly, that Keith happened to be a brilliant dead-ball taker and he bagged a few more from direct free-kicks amongst the 42 he got that season in league and cup.

Of course, apart from not being on free-kicks all of the time, Edwards also wasn't on penalties (with Kenworthy and Morris taking that responsibility) and frequently took corners. Just how many more goals could he have bagged had that not been the case?

What a striker. As Deano mentions above, the best 'one-on-one' finisher I've seen.
 
I went on holiday to the Isle of Wight that day. I didn't know our score but Jimmy Hill mentioned that Keith Edwards had scored 4 goals for us, but he didn't say the result, which I didn't find out until I read the Sunday paper.

Quite right.

As far as I know (and I'm sure someone will correct me), Edwards took and scored one penalty for us on 2nd November 1985 v Hull in a 3-1 win, presumably Morris didn't play that game. In fact Edwards got a hat-trick that day and part of a run of games where he scored 9 in 5 games.
 
Brian Deane scored 4 goals for Leeds when he was 36!




Georges Santos, Gareth Ainsworth and Paul Furlong all playing for QPR that day.

Edwards took the penalty because Morris had been subbed.

He scored 9 in 4 games: 2 v Barnsley (won 3-1), 2 away v Bradford (won 4-1) 3 at home to Hull (won 3-1) and 2 at Oldham (won 5-1).

he also took (and scored) a penalty in the 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe in 1983-4 when Morris was out injured.
 



Wasn't it this match were he dummied the defender and keeper who ran into each other.? the memory not so great these days

I bet you were hoping for a massacre then and ended up disappointed when you found out we’d only won 4 0.

Porterfield was always rumoured to be interested in signing Bruce around that time. It was players like that he should have gone for the year before when Brealey was still backing him. We didn't need anymore strikers the front three of Edwards / Hatton / Morris were more than good enough and worked well together. Instead of Young and Curran, if he'd have gone for Bruce, Danny Wilson and Gerry Forrest (all players Porterfield was supposedly interested in) we might have done back-to-back promotions and who knows from there.

You're right of course, I was also counting the 2-1 defeat to Man City in the Full Members Cup on 22nd Oct.
 
Could someone please put to bed an urban myth for me por favor ?

I was at this game. It was pre electronic scoreboard days. The old scoreboard was still in use where a bloke updated both the score and the scorers number with numbered “tiles” countdown style !

Did the scoreboard bloke run out of number 9s that day and had to use an upside down 6 to signal Edwards 4th goal ?

We were also after Dean Saunders(Brighton) and Ray Houghton (Oxford) a year or two later so Porterfield could have had a decent team by the time we were in division 2.

Houghton would have been an outstanding signing at that time
