GILLESPIE IN QUIT THREAT

KEITH GILLESPIE has stunned Sheffield United by slapping in a shock transfer request after failing to agree a new deal.

The Northern Ireland star's deal runs out at the end of the season, and he expected to be rewarded for his consistently fine form this term with a substantial pay hike.

But Gillespie - sent off at Reading yesterday - has only been offered a £2,000- a-week wage rise 17 months after joining from Leicester.

Wouldnt surprise me if he left.

To be honest it would suprise me if he did. The fella is what 31? So he has a few years probably in him, but we gave him the chance which no one else would. I can't see many teams going for him to play him in their first teams in the Premiership.

I don't want to see him go and don't think he will. I do think this is just something a journo has used to thicken up the point he was sent off yesterday. Where is this quote from?

Gillespie shocks Blades
Last updated at 21:30pm on 22nd January 2007

Keith Gillespie stunned Sheffield United last night when he handed in a transfer request to chief executive Terry Robinson.

The Blades winger, sent off during Saturday's stormy 3-1 defeat at Reading for elbowing Stephen Hunt within a minute of coming on as a substitute, is understood to be upset with the terms of a new contract on offer at Bramall Lane. Gillespie intended to hand his request to Blades chief Neil Warnock yesterday, but the manager has taken himself off to Devon for a few days to cool down following his dismissal at the Madejski Stadium.

Sources at Reading revealed last night that Warnock was so concerned that the Royals' first team coach Wally Downes wanted to take their touchline feud further that he locked himself in the visitors dressing room at the final whistle.

Taken from the Daily Mail.

It is true he never signed a new deal and it looks he will go.

dont think he would have locked himself in if morgan was there, anyone came in and hed have been there snarling :D

I doubt this story has much truth in it, i also doubt that many clubs would be queuing up for Keefs services; despite what the red top tabloids would have us think.

Starting to believe the transfer request as he cant agree a new deal.

He was working for Sky on the Plymouth game last night along with Blackwell so thats the main reason he was in Devon.

This story doesn't sound too believable to me.
Why would he hand in a transfer request 2 days after being sent off in one of the highest-profile footy events of the weekend?!
Surely he realises that people are going to think he's a bit of an idiot and he hasn't exactly covered himself in glory. Plus he'll have a lengthy ban coming up - who's gonna shell out for a player in the window who'll miss half the rest of the season?

Paper talk!
Unless they're printing a "re-jigged" story from 3 months ago

Who would take him though? The only team in the prem i can think who would be willing to sign him with decent wages would be watford.

Been announced on SSN that Keith Gillespie has handed in a transfer request, i guess there really is no smoke without fire.

WTF is he thinking? Plucked from obscurity, promoted in his first season, career back on track, puts in a transfer request.

It's only a three match ban as well.

Fuck Keef then the ungrateful bastard.

I know how you feel... but he doesn't play for the Blades out of the kindness of his heart. It's his job and wouldn't we all like a payrise (those of us who have jobs, that is.)

Well if it wasnt for us that shithead would be playing in league one or have had to retire.

With Fulham, Middlesbrough and Watford interested, I doubt he would be playing in League One.

It's very easy to get angry without the full facts to hand (Rob Hughes in the Sunday Times seems to do it very well).

Do you know how much Gillespie is on compared to the other players?

Do you know how much it would cost to replace Gillespie were he to leave?

Do you know the ins and outs of all conversations between the board, the manager and the player in these contract negotiations?

I would hazard a guess at a no.

So all we can do is discuss speculation, not knowing the truth or who is (and who isn't) a bad guy in the situation.

At the end of the day, if he's performing and on a significant amount less than players who are under-performing... could you really blame him for asking for more money?

The timing has pissed people off more than the circumstances I feel.

just makes you wonder if what happened on Saturday was more deliberate than we all believe

All true Linz, but the facts that we do have are that he was released by Leicester, on a pay as you play contract with us up until not all that long ago, he snatched our hands off for the short-term contract we offered him, proved his worth and now he's handed in a transfer request before negotiations are complete. That seems a little cold to me.

Gillespie charged

Tuesday, 23 January 2007.

Sheffield United midfielder Keith Gillespie has been charged with violent conduct.

The charge relates to Gillespie's conduct following his dismissal (also for violent conduct) during the game against Reading at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday 20 January.

Under The FA's fast track disciplinary system, Gillespie has until 6pm on Wednesday 24 January to admit or deny the charge. A Disciplinary Commission will hear the case on Tuesday 30 January.

Hes done that on a purpose. no team will buy him if hes suspended. So its him saying to the board, give me a new contract or im going for free at the end of the season.

he can fuck off for me now, it will be boos if he ever plays at the lane again from me.

warnock rescued his career and he treats the club like this? its a disgrace
