Justin Haber, the Malta international goalkeeper, is to have a trial with English club Sheffield United.
Haber's solid performances for French club US Quevilly last season, allied with his status as Malta's no.1 goalkeeper, are the two prime factors that prompted Sheffield United, who gained promotion to the Premiership last season, to invite the former Birkirkara netminder for a trial.
Also yesterday, it was learnt that Saviour Darmanin, a former Malta no.1, agreed to join Premier League club Valletta who were seeking a new goalkeeper.
Last season, Darmanin played for Gozitans Ghajnsielem after parting company with Pietà Hotspurs.
Darmanin, 29, has agreed terms after lengthy discussions with Valletta. The Citizens have already started pre-season training.
Haber, who is expected to fly out to England on Sunday, confirmed the news of his upcoming Sheffield United trial but added that Crystal Palace have also declared their interest to assess his potential.
"My manager in England has told me that I will be one of two goalkeepers on trial at Sheffield United next week," Haber said.
"In all, four goalkeepers will be on trial with Sheffield United. Crystal Palace have also notified my manager that they are willing to see me in action in a friendly this month."
As a free agent, Haber's chances of securing a move overseas are clearly better than if he were still under contract.
"Playing in the French league last season has certainly enhanced my prospects of advancing in my career," Haber added. "My performances for US Quevilly have caught the eye of a number of scouts.
"Some of them saw me playing for Malta against Japan in a pre-World Cup friendly in Duesseldorf.
"I'm obviously looking forward to making the most of the opportunities I will have over the next few weeks. I'm also a bit excited about the prospect of training with an English Premier League club."
