Jose Baxter to get Sheffield United lifeline

Jose Baxter
Jose Baxter will be allowed to rebuild his career at Bramall Lane during the second half of the League One season.

The Sheffield United midfielder has not made a first team appearance for nearly five weeks after being disciplined following an off-the-pitch incident last month.

But, contrary to reports, The Star understands that United will not sell the 23-year-old. Instead Baxter, who has taken part in a number of community initiatives during his absence, is likely to be offered the chance to regain a place in Nigel Adkins’ starting eleven. Another breach of protocol, however, is likely to have serious consequences for Baxter’s future prospects.

Adkins, whose side resumes its bid for promotion when Bradford City visit South Yorkshire today, refused to elaborate on either the nature of Baxter’s offence or the punishment involved before United’s recent FA Cup victory over his former club Oldham.

Describing Baxter as a “pivotal figure,” he told the media: “Everyone is well aware I am very strong on discipline at the football club. If someone steps out of line, they get disciplined and that’s what we have done with Jose on this situation.”

“We have done it with other players in the past,” Adkins continued. “It’s put to bed from our point of view, no more further comments, and we get on. We have talked about it, had our own review of what’s gone on, and Jose has been disciplined.”

Baxter, who started his career at Everton, was handed a five month suspension, three of those suspended, after failing a routine out-of-competition drugs test towards the end of last term. He maintained his drink had been spiked with ecstasy during a night out in London and the relatively light punishment suggests the authorities found Baxter’s explanation credible.

United, meanwhile, will again be without Che Adams for the meeting with City. The England under-20 international had been due to complete a three match ban against Wigan Athletic on Boxing Day but the match at the DW Stadium was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and local flooding.

Fuck him off. One chance too many for me. If anything's worse than a poor squad of players, it's one with a set of stinking attitudes. We need up and at em professionals that are willing to give everything for the red and white. Baxter seems to have made it his mission to prove he isn't that. Not the type of player I want playing for my football club.

I don't think Baxter being on drugs is necessarily a bad idea. Maybe we could slip him some amphetamines to make him move a bit and shed those extra pounds.

This fucker must be good, he must be, to be given chance after chance

Where has he been all Season, and last Season ............................... etc, etc

Your football club? After you sold your season ticket? It's your football club?

Where has he been? At the top of the assist table and not far off on the goals table either?

But i mean yeah, sure... Let's ignore the fact he is our best player and ignore further that he's proven it on the pitch this season

Good. We can't afford to bin him, we're not good enough to and it's pointless to throw away an asset. We're not going to carry on keeping clean sheets all season. We'll need someone to create chances and chip in with goals. Not many others in the squad have done that. I don't think he has been or is the 'problem' player some assume either. And between now and the end of the season he'll be giving everything, firstly because he's out of contract and secondly he'll be determined to prove a point after this little episode. We'd be daft not to take advantage of that. Nothing says he'll have to start every game either.

Sack him, his behaviour in Dublin was a fucking disgrace on top of all his other misdemeanours.

Okay, he doesn't own a half and half scalf, but he's had his chances.

Does anybody know what actually happened in Dublin. All seems here say and cloak and dagger. All I can say if Baxter is stopping , he better do the busines, as I for one is more than pissed off with the players this season. Also Adkins does not help himself in certain situations. 5 years in this league is enough shit for one and all.
Baxter -grow up or do us all a favour and fuck off.

We could always transfer list him. Probably still get a half decent fee for the tubby fucker.

I'm happy to trust Adkins judgement on this problem with Baxter. I dug up this quote from Adkins from when he was manager at Scunthorpe:

“As a physio, your door is always open. Players aren’t injured but come to you and say: ‘I’ve got nowhere else to go’. I’ve had to deal with the drug problems, the drinking problems, the gambling problems, the women problems.

“Or: ‘The supporters are absolutely slaughtering me. I just need to be out of the fishbowl where I’m getting bombarded, so I’ve got a groin strain’. He hasn’t got a groin strain. It’s just a cry for help to get him out of the environment. I realised I was more like a social worker, a counsellor.”

This tells me that Adkins has the right experience to get the best out of problem players like Baxter. If Adkins hasn't given up on him yet then neither should the club.

Personally though we are grinding results out our current midfield is a very defensive one. If we go behind in a game I can't see that set up being creative enough to unlock the oppositions door twice to win the match. We may be affective at the moment but the strikers are feeding off scraps at best

Baxter, like a number of players at the club, has had a number of second or more chances. Whilst Baxter's problems are more of his making, we have seen the number of opportunities given to bang average players. I'm sick of it, and the seeming lack of discipline and tolerance of mediocrity is grinding me down.

That said, I'm about to jump in the car & drive to the Lane to put myself through another 90 minutes of pain! UTB

Adkins may be understanding and a social worker at the time of being a physio , when win ,lose or draw were not on his shoulders results wise.He is now the manager therefore the dynamics change.
With Adkins like in life ,who cares for the carer.

We just want fans players manager in the right frame of mind for 2016. Only winning and success will achieve this.

Good find, makes me want to sit on uncle Nigel's lap and tell him about all my woes

Is this down to Adkin's though?
Maybe...maybe not.

I think Baxter did try this season and has put in the occasional good performance...but in the long run, he is and has been part of the problem.

If we had better options or the prospect of someone coming into midfield in Jan I think we'd let him rot in the reserves/sell ( if someone would buy)

See whether he's on the bench today eh?

Depresses me a little that we're that shit we have to compromise morals for somebody who has 1/50 of the creative talent of someone like Michael Brown. Fuck off and get rid. Last year of contract, if we offer another like we did with Flynn then this club is fucked.

This information was brought to you last week by me. Some people wouldn't have it but I've been justified.:)

Baxter is worth a place on the bench at the moment. If what he's done is not a stackable offence then its right to keep him. One of many who wouldn't be getting a contract extension based on what I've seen so far.

So we are not going to offload him just yet then. Probably because we don't have the cash to replace him with someone better.

All this talk about Baxter doing this or that no one outside the club really knows what happened. He might have been caught having it off with the bar maid for all we know. Its history now let him get on with his rehabilitation and help us get promotion ,he is a quality player can we really afford to ditch him?. No

The paucity of creativity in the squad means we have to keep giving him more chances. He's not even all that good, but when you look at the others in there you can see why we've done it.

Another example of why we need some propper signings in the summer.
