A hero to many of us, Silent. Got close to 1 goal every 2 games including a memorable header to sink the Pigs at the Lane.

Another we sold too soon but you could understand him wanting to step up a division and go to Newcastle.

Hallelujah John Tudor, hope he makes a quick recovery.

Not that memorable mate. It was his SHOT through Grummets legs that sank the bastards that day.
Memory's going, it must be another game I'm thinking of. He was superb in the air, I've got this picture of him crashing a header in at the Bramall Lane end and now I don't know who it was against

Could have been Bury at home? We beat them 5-0 soon after the 2-0 away victory I believe ( Silent to confirm?) And King Tudor may well have had a hat trick that day?
I liked him but John Harris was less than enamoured with him at times hence the sell on. Was he not a Rowley purchase? (Silent?)

His winning goal was a soft shot that found its way through Peter Grummitt's legs

The only photo of a Tudor header that resulted in a goal at the Lane End I can think of is in the 3-0 win against Hull in October 1969 (not long before I became a Lane regular). In the YTV video you can see his 1st half hat trick (including a header) at the Lane End in the 5-0 win against Bury in February 1969. There is more than a handful number of photos of him scoring at the Kop End with a header.

Yes Arthur Rowley signed him from Coventry and he became our record signing (£65K, I think).

John Harris preferred Colin Addison's holding the ball up style that saw him wear the number 9 shirt for most of the 1969-70 season and Tudor was the sub quite often. Angry Blades fans wrote letters to the Green Un stating that Tudor is the better striker

Didnt he come back to the Lane playing for Newcastle and scored for them?

Yes, in August 1972. My dad and I were talking to him, his wife Ann and his mother in law before the match outside the players entrance in John Street. We agreed to meet again after the game. After a goalless first half, Malcolm MacDonald fired the Magpies into the lead. Geoff Salmons equalised for us with a long low shot after a free kick was rolled to him. Then Tudor headed the winner at the Kop End. I was upset with him scoring! after the game my dad then said "let's go and see John now". I shouted "No!". My dad then talked me round before I reluctantly agreed! When we came over to see John, his wife and his mother in law, my dad told John that he had to talk round me into seeing him after the match. John laughed and patted on my head!

Thought I remembered that game but I was bit preoccupied with battling with the Geordies who were on the Shoreham

Yes, I remember a friend (who passed away a few months ago) telling me some years ago about the fighting near the Kop corner in that Newcastle match. I do not remember this as fighting at the ground was quite common these days

Tudor Tudor Tudor score another goal for me ...
I remember the match v Newcastle. I walked onto the back if the kop into a big gap. Stood there and this lad walked over and took a swing at me. I pushed him away and all hell let loose around me. Eventually I got away. The police seemed to think I'd started it and it started again as some lads stopped the coppers taking me off. Bizarre.

Played on my first visit to the Lane against QPR in Nov 1970, possibly even scored. Was only a kid so slightly hazy memory. All the best for a speedy recovery to him.

Yes, he scored early in the game at the Lane End, Geoff Salmons had set off a mazy run and before being challenged heavily by QPR's keeper Phil Parkes and Tudor was quick enough to blast the loose ball into the net. He was more concerned about Salmons who was lying injured in the penalty box rather than celebrating his goal. Ron Hunt equalised for QPR in the 2nd half heading in a free kick. Phil Parkes made several stunning saves to deny us a 2nd goal. We thought we had scored the winner when Colin Addison converted a Woody corner but the ref disallowed the goal stating that he blew for time before the ball crossed the line. There were police outside the players entrance in John Street giving protection to the ref, John Yates, as there were a group of angry Blades fans wanting a word with him!

Thanks for that silent. Yes, I do remember the late disallowed goal.

Cheers SB - I also went with me Dad to the return game on Easter Monday 1971 - 0 - 0 wasn't it?
Yes, I was in the North Stand (Tudor had left for Newcastle 3 months earlier) for that scoreless draw. Dont remember much about the match though, I remember Hockey's controversial goal at home to Millwall in the next day very well!

Can remember not being annoyed that he'd scored.

United players surrounded the referee and I remember Len Badger dropping to his knees in absolute despair once it became clear the goal wouldn't stand.

What's the song, we've been puzzling since this thread started. It ended " and Tudor is the King".

Possibly, to tune of 'Land of Hope and Glory',
We've got Hope and Currie
Gil Reece on the wing,
Dearden in the centre
And Tudor is our king

However, on JT's departure, Hockey became 'our king' and so on and so on..

Tudor didn't feature in that song. He couldn't have, given that Hope had arrived in part-exchange when Tudor went to Newcastle.

Didn't it first appear in the programme for the Watford promotion game in 1971 with the lyrics attributed to John Harris?

remember going to newcastle and we won 2-1,around 72 a packed house new years eve, was on the terrace where the players came out and got Tudors autograph at the end , told him how much I missed him
car kept breaking down on way home , someone had got under the bonnet on my brand new austin 1100 (£455) and swopped their dodgy ht leads for my new ones, got home at 5am new years day
was always a favourite of mine , especially he was the one out of the 4/5 waiting to knock in the winner v the pigs after we had sportingly let them come back from 2-0 down to give them false hope

I think it was the result of a fan's competition in the match programme. There was a second verse .......
Higher still and higher
will our goals be set
John Harris who made us mighty
will make us mightier yet
