Hope some of you older blades can help me here...

I was only about 9 or 10 at the time so the memory might be failing me but I recall going to see us lose 2-1 at home to Rotherham probably 80-81 when we were relegated and they won the old 3rd championship and our goal was scored by right back, John Ryan. As I recall it was a shot from just inside their half so about 45 yards and flew in the top corner and was still rising as it hit the back of the net....... or did I dream this?

I seem to recall similar, some fans dubbed it " the John Ryan express" not sure what game but it was as sweetly struck shot as I've ever seen, I was a kid always stood right behind the net and I seem to remember thinking as he hit it this is in all the way.

I was also behind the net and thought St the time that it was unstoppable but, on seeing the highlights on TV later, the keeper should have saved it. Was still a very sweet strike mind.

5.11 in the below video

What amazes me in that section of the VT is the number of goals scored where the player kept the canonball shot down rather than blazing it over the bar as is often seen these days! Can't blame a bobble in the pitch they were playing on ploughed fields.

A load of highlights of players blazing it over the bar would be a bit shit though.

Could also be because the balls were heavier and flew straight then and not like the balloons they play with now that swerve all over the place.

Does anyone remember Johnny Metgod's screamer of a free kick whilst playing for Forest?

I bet he said "Stop that y'cunt" as he hit it.

Never mind his "wonder goal", who remembers his penalty miss?

Can't remember who it was against (although Millwall or Gillingham are coming to mind) but it was a stonker and it was followed by the loudest booing of a United player I can ever remember at BTDBL.

For all of you who think "our fans are cunts" now, you'd have shit your kecks!

Speaking of cunts, presumably Ryan was taking that penalty because Peters had left Kenworthy out again.

I think the booing for Paul Richardson when he was subbed in his last game was pretty loud and raucous. It was enough for him to turn and give the rods to the kop :D

Indeed SEB, Richardson certainly got plenty of grief that day. It just seemed that Ryan sparked the whole crowd rather than just the Kop. Never heard it as loud!
If memory serves that was a night game v Bristol Rovers at the tail end of the 82-83 season. We were losing 1-0 for most of the game but got two late goals to win it.

Ahh don't defenders score great goals.

Loads more but can't be bothered to find the videos haha.

He missed 2 in successive games - at Portsmouth on 10/1/81 and at home to Gillingham on 17/1/81. We lost both games 1-0 and if one of the pens had gone in, we would have stayed up...

Excellent info Dazzler and it being a second successive probably explains the ferocity of the booing at the home game.

Never knew about the Pompey miss as I had only returned from the States the day before the Gills game. Obviously none of my "so called" mates thought to explain what I must admit seemed a bit of an over reaction at the time.
