Outgoing? John Lundstram

Agree...but what is a fair contract?

Lets assume he’s currently on £10K a week and the going rate for an average young PL player is £70K a week.
Lets assume the going rate for an average Championship player is £10K a week, average league 1 player £4K a week and league 2 player £2K a week.

So the question is how would you assess Lundstrum?

Last season he wasn‘t even Championship standard....so probably deserved £7K a week.
He’s really throws a spanner in the works because for 2 months of the season he’s shown himself to be average PL standard arguably deserving £60K a week.
The big issue with Lunny though is that he‘s only delivered the top performances for 2 months and in the last 2 months his form has dipped somewhat.

We don’t even know if Lunny is a top player or whether he was a 2 month wonder.

I would offer him a realistic amount....probably £15 to £20K with loads of performance related bonuses built in.
‘It depends what our alrernative options are....suspect Lunny could get more money going elsewhere but he risks his career stalling then returning to league 1.

Lunny's worth about 30k a week right now. He's a good player for us but not irreplaceable. And he may seem a solid Premier League player, but it's only been six months, and this was after two years of looking quite poor in the Championship. Potentially interested clubs will know this. There's also an overriding feeling that Wilder and/or the system is bringing out the very best in these players. It's why JOC hasn't been called up by England, and why Egan isn't commanding bids of £30 million. They're great in this system, but clubs are clearly thinking about whether they'll be quite as good with them. I'd bet that we get it sorted, and I hope so because I think it's the best outcome for JL and SUFC.

If any of our player are asking for that kind of money, the adios, au revoir, auf wiedersehen, get fucked.

There's only one person at the club worth any where close to that, and is name is Sir Chris of Wilder....

I think a lot of people around the country calling him 'Lord Lundstram' because he's getting a lot of points in the fantasy football game has gone to his head.

Swings and roundabouts to be fair. In hindsight we would have been as well offering him a contract last season.

However, as the likes of Clarke, carruthers, Holmes have shown (if he falls out of favour, which isn’t out of the realms of possibility) we would struggle to offload him to anyone. No one in The champ dan pay 30/40k per week anymore - so we could end up with lots of dead money.

Hard to begrudge him asking for a load of money in what is likely to be his highest contract / the contract that sets him up for life.

The problem is not just Lunny. His is the first contract up for renegotiation since we established ourselves in the top 10. But he is clearly not on a level to importance to the team as any of the back 5, Fleck Norwood. So assuming that none of those are on £60k or a thing like that it would create a lot of ill feeling and Unrest. It is reported we have the lowest wage bill in the PL by some margin and no doubt this needs to be looked at but for the present we can’t give Lunny a silly increase. I think his agent is trying it on. Maybe he has same one as Duffy. They are both scousers and used to share cars over from Liverpool.

Same agency according to transfermarkt

Interesting and complex issue that all clubs will confront when promoted.

Correct me, but weren't our players given a hike in wages for being promoted? Of course it depends on exactly how much is under discussion, but it's public knowledge that we have the lowest wage bill in the Premier division, so little wonder that players and their agents will push for an increased wage. Central to all of this is what Wilder thinks about Lunny and whether, in Wilder's view, Lunny has the potential to show improved levels of performance on a consistent basis. At some point we're going to have to address the question of increased wages, otherwise we will lose players who we consider indispensable to our chances of remaining a Prem club.

If a club like Southampton can afford to keep hold of a player like Redmond or Ings then surely it can't be beyond our grasp to be able to compete on similar wages paid? I must stress, I don't want us to rush into a situation that we're not prepared for, where we increase wages to levels that suddenly put an unreasonable burden on the club's finances. There's essential work to be done on our training facilities, the place that Wilder refers to where CW, Knill, and the other staff members teach the players how to improve as individuals as well as team players. This is critical and must be prioritised, but returning to wages, even now, with not even a full season played in the Prem, we need to consider the implications of attracting better quality players without an improved wage structure.

Heard that the average premier league salary is c £3 million p.a. , so think a lot of our lads will be looking for bigger wages when their contracts are winding down

It might be the average but the average is hugely skewed by the top six clubs who use their huge incomes to pay wages much higher than the rest of the PL.

Aguerro might be on £300k a week but Chris Woods will be on about £60k.

We’ll have to increase their wages but not by anything like some of the figures I’ve seen suggested.

Footballer's wages are a massive bone of contention yes tops ones may ne on 300k a week but, don't forget lower down you go some players struggle to even get a wage (Macclesfield). Someone mentioned 10k a week now if someone cannot live on 40k a month minus tax there's summat wrong, no player is worth the stupid money they throw at them lots of people would be happy to get 22k a year let alone in a month.

I totally get that wages are obscene nowadays but there's so much money sploshing around in football now that it should go to the top players as they're the ones generating the income at the end of the day. Without them there wouldn't be all the money in the 1st place.

Would people rather the owners pocketed it when they haven't done anything to earn it?

More concerned now with what happens with O’Connell. With Duffy gone and now maybe Lunny who is going to do the commute with Jack. We need to sign another scouser

Can't see the club paying anywhere near £60k.
We are not an established premier league club yet. First season and some seem to think we can compete on the same level as others whom have been collecting millions of Premiership money for quite a few years 🤔

I hope Wilder is on more than £60k p/w, if he’s only on that, we’re seriously having his pants down!

With United's fortunes changing so dramatically in such a short term, negotiating a long term contract could prove quite difficult. A player could see newer arrivals get large salaries while he is tied into a much lower one with a long term making his transfer value not so appealing to rival clubs?
Rightly or wrongly that might have been Duffy's bone of contention?

The length of contract might be an issue as well as the money. As good as he's been this season overall, he's probably the one of the next usual starters we'll be looking to upgrade on.
He'll want at least a 3 year deal if not 4, whereas I'd be surprised if he's still making the starting 11 in 18 months time, so in an ideal world I'd want to give him 2 years with the option of a 3rd.
If he can get an offer of £40-50k for 3/4 years somewhere else I just don't see us matching it.

To be a solid prem team we probs need to be paying our best players 50/60 K would imagine thats the going rate

Were not in league one lads

Dangerous game not signing a new contract. What happens if he breaks his leg? He won’t get any club in the summer. ⚔️

Yep. He's not better than Fleck or Norwood and more of a squad player for me because Besic, Freeman and a new signing will be given time in CM.

Luke. Freeman. Will. Not. Be. Played. By. Wilder. On. The. Right. Side. Of. Midfield.

It’s fine to be ok with Lundstram going on the basis that Besic might be a viable replacement, or we might replace him with a new signing. But Luke Freeman is not competing for the same role – he just isn’t, and won’t ever be.

Correct but who drops outta the 3 if we play with a Freeman (CAM type) like we have a few times this season.

We have 4 mifielders to our name and you want to get rid of him ??

Lunny has been one of our best midfielders easy and you want to get rid just cause hes knackered and had two bad games.

Give your head a wobble

We haven’t started a single game with that formation, and have only gone to it in a handful of instances where we’ve been chasing games. In the most recent instance McGoldrick took it. I‘m not saying we won’t ever go back to it in the future, but given the success of the current system this seems unlikely we will start with it. We might not start with it at all this season – Fylde would have been a perfect opportunity and Freeman took LCM instead. If we weren’t going to go back to it for that, I think you can see the way this is going.

Palace home and Chelsea away didn't Freeman start though?
